Abstract

Bullying at work is a long-standing area of research interest that requires investigation of the role of the individual exposed to systematic negative behaviour. Studies using cross-sectional samples and broad personality measures have found some distinguishing personal characteristics of employees who are bullied compared to others. Few, however have applied theoretical frameworks to explain why personality can play a part in why an individual ends up at the receiving end of bullying and harassment at work. This article applies an overall and specific theoretical model, the vulnerability thesis, to investigating the role of temperament in relation to workplace bullying. The results show that (1) some employees exposed to bullying at work also acted as perpetrators (provocative victims), that (2) exposure to bullying at work is connected with temperamental emotional vulnerability, and that (3) hostility and self-oriented aggression mediate the role of personality in the form of temperament in relation to workplace bullying. Strengths and weaknesses and potential practical implications for helpers of employees exposed to bullying at work are discussed.

Abstract

The major task of this paper is to show and discuss the tools, techniques and strategies which affect the development of phraseological competence in foreign languages. First, the author will investigate a wide range of available dictionaries as well as French textbooks. Then, the selected techniques and phraseo-didactic strategies will be explored. Finally, the author will provide an in-depth review of the method according to which the discussed techniques and strategies have been put in practice in the selected texts on phraseo-didactics

Abstract

The geometry and operating parameters have an important influence on the performance of ejectors. The improvement of the refrigeration cycle performance and the design of the ejectors for the compression energy recovery requires a detailed analysis of the internal ejector working characteristics and geometry. To this aim, an experimental investigation of an ejector refrigeration system is conducted to determine the effect of the most important ejector dimensions on ejector working characteristics and system performance. Different dimensions of ejector components are tested. The influence of the ejector’s geometrical parameters on the system performance was analysed. The experiments with respect to the variation of ejector geometry such as the motive nozzle throat diameter, the mixing chamber diameter and the distance between the motive nozzle and diffuser were carried out. There exist optimum design parameters in each test. The experimental results show that the performance (entrainment ratio and a compression ratio of the ejector) increases significantly with the position between the primary nozzle and the mixing chamber. A maximum entrainment ratio of 57.3% and a compression ratio of 1.26 were recorded for the different parameters studied. The results obtained are consistent with experimental results found in the literature.

Abstract

Metcalfa pruinosa (Say, 1830) was recorded for the first time in Poland, in the city of Warsaw. This Nearctic species of the Flatidae family was introduced into Europe in the late 1970s and has expanded its range ever since. We provide data on the first record as well as briefly characterize the insect in terms of its diagnostic features, biology and potential harm to agriculture and the environment.

Abstract

The aim of this work was to induce permanent birefringence both in typical liquid crystal cells and photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) by photo-polymerization. For this purpose three different liquid crystalline materials, namely E7, 5CB, and 6CHBT were combined with a mixture of RM257 monomer and a UV sensitive initiator with the percentage weight less than 10%. Due to the photo-polymerization process it was possible to achieve polymer-stabilized liquid crystal orientation inside LC cells and micro-sized cylindrical glass tubes. In particular, periodic change in spatial molecular orientation was achieved by selective photo-polymerization. Successful results obtained in these simple geometries allowed for the experimental procedure to be repeated in PCFs leading to locally-induced permanent birefringence in PCFs.

Abstract

The article presents the possibilities of using popular MEMS inertial sensors in the object tilt angle estimation system and in the system for stabilizing the vertical position of the balancing robot. Two research models were built to conduct the experiment. The models use microcontroller development board of the STM32F3 series with the Cortex-M4 core, equipped with a three-axis accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope. To determine the accuracy of the angle estimation, comparative tests with a pulse encoder were performed.

Abstract

The present paper analyses the self-portrait of Isabelle Eberhardt emerging from the letters she wrote to three men: her brother Augustin de Moerder, her friend Ali Abdul Wahab and her husband Slimène Ehnni. The paper is divided into three parts. The first one discusses her desire of Orient, the second shows her will of annihilating herself and the last one focuses on the power of the desert which helps the writer to find the desired calm.

Abstract

The paper shows the hybrid method of stress and strain distributions analysis. In the method, the results of displacement measurement were used as boundary conditions in the numerical analysis of the tested objects. The numerical analysis was performed with the use of the finite element method (FEM), whereas measurements of displacement were made by laser grating interferometry technique (moire interferometry). Examples of tests presented in the paper show good efficiency of the method in the analysis of stress and strain distribution in the areas of their heterogeneous distribution. Mutual completion of laser grating interferometry and finite element method makes it possible to exclude their disadvantages creating broader' possibilities for research impossible to achieve in separate use.

Abstract

In the chaotic situation following the British invasion of southern Palestine at the end of 1917, military officials faced several countervailing pressures. In addition to ongoing military priorities (including international norms pertaining to military occupations, such as the law of the ‘status quo’), pressing humanitarian concerns, and even the personal religious sentiments of individual officers, the British occupation administration was forced to take into account international pressures and interventions resulting from the overlapping and conflicting promises made during the war (inter alia, Sykes‑Picot agreement, Husayn‑McMahon correspondence, Balfour Declaration, and President Wilson’s 14 Points). This paper focuses on the land policy‑making process as a case study with which to weigh the various factors pressing upon the military occupation as it evolved during its first three years. Land ownership was a huge concern: a properly functioning land registry was seen as key to the improvement of economic and social conditions in the largely agricultural economy, and British interventions were followed closely by all interested parties. The land has also been at the centre of the ensuing century‑long conflict between Arabs and Jews. Thus, a close examination of land policies (and especially the 1920 land ordinance) offers an extremely important window on both the rule of law in the aftermath of the war and our understanding of the current, unending conflict in the land.

Abstract

In the structural reinforcement of a high-rise residential building in Changzhou city, Jiangsu province, China, the technology of prestressed steel bar strengthening shear wall, which was initiated in China, was applied. Combined with the engineering quality inspection report, the project characteristics and the requirements of the construction party, various methods, such as increasing cross-section reinforcement method and staged replacement concrete reinforcement method, were comprehensively used to treat and reinforce the structures with different quality problems and different parts. In general, the stress and strain of the newly added part always lags behind the stress and strain of the original structure. This will cause the stress of the original structure is too high and the deformation is large, while the stress of the new part is still at a low level, which cannot fully play its role and its due reinforcement effect. Prestressed steel bar reinforced shear wall technology, through the prestressed steel bar on the prestressed steel bar, which is a good solution to this problem, avoid the phenomenon of stress lag, and ultimately not only shorten the construction period of reinforcement, but also ensure the quality of reinforcement and user use area, successfully passed the reinforcement special acceptance. The monitoring data also proved that the reinforcement measures adopted are safe, reliable and economical. This paper can provide reference for the effective development of similar reinforcement projects.

Abstract

This article presents shortly reasons for improving designs of turboprop and turboshaft engines, and describes aero-thermodynamic aspects of methods or modification of these devices. The theoretical analysis of methods or modification concerns general changes or efficiency, flow, and rating. The influence of the following factors on engine performance is presented: change of efficiency or engine units, increase of compression and flow rate by using a compressor zerostage, change of compressor pressure ratio, changes of gas temperature keeping the gasgenerator rotational speed constant by adjusting the minimal throat area of turbine nozzle guide vanes, turbornachinery modelling, and changes of rotational speed of ratings.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to show how graduated engineering students in classical ICT view practically the advent of the QIT. The students do their theses in El.Eng. and ICT and were asked how to implement now or in the future the QIT in their current or future work. Most of them have strictly defined research topics and in some cases the realization stage is advanced. Thus, most of the potential QIT application areas are defined and quite narrow. In such a case, the issue to be considered is the incorporation of QIT components and interfaces into the existing ICT infrastructure, software and hardware alike, and propose a solution as a reasonable functional hybrid system. The QIT components or circuits are not standalone in most cases, they should be somehow incorporated into existing environment, with a measurable added value. Not an easy task indeed. We have to excuse the students if the proposed solutions are not ripe enough. The exercise was proposed as an on-purpose publication workshop, related strictly to the fast and fascinating development of the QIT. The paper is a continuation of publishing exercises with previous groups of students participating in QIT lectures.

Abstract

Opal can be found in several locations, including America, Tanzania, Brazil, Mexico, East Africa, Indonesia and Australia, which is now the world’s top producer of black opal. One of the most economically valuable gems in the world is the mineraloid opal. In the Rongkong area, opal is found in the host rock of volcanic igneous rock, namely andesite. This study aims to determine the opal mineraloid host-rock’s microstructural characteristics and the elemental and compound content of the opal mineraloid host-rock’s geochemistry in the Rongkong area, Indonesia. The research took three samples in the field as large as hand specimens. The three samples were one host-rock sample and two opal mineraloid samples; the samples were then prepared and analyzed in the laboratory. Laboratory analysis was performed using SEM-EDS, XRF and petrographic analyses. The results of the SEM-EDS test analysis showed that most opal mineraloid carrier rock constituents are aluminum and oxide. This can be seen from the substantial Al and O content. In samples 1 and 2, Al, O, Ca and P with the highest composition of chemical compounds are Al2O3, CaO, and P2O5. The Rongkong opal mineraloid from Limbong Village, Rongkong District, North Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, based on the results of XRF analysis, contains the chemical compounds SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, Fe2O3, CaO, TiO2, RuO2, SrO, MnO, V2O5, Rb2O, Ag2O and CuO. The content compound that is more dominant in opal mineraloids is SiO2 due to silicate enrichment in the forming of opal mineraloids.

The species of the brachiopod genus Terebratella d'Orbigny, which does not correspond to any one reported hitherto from the upper Eocene-? lower Oligocene La Meseta Formation of Seymour Island, West Antarctica but showing a strong affinity to the Recent T. inconspicua (Sowerby), is described.

Abstract

The author reviews the main elements of Richard Münch’s academic capitalism theory. By introducing categories like “audit university” or “entrepreneurial university,” the German sociologist critically sets the present academic management model against the earlier, modern-era conception of academic research as an “exchange of gifts.” In the sociological and psychological sense, the latter is a social communication structure rooted in traditional social lore, for instance the potlatch ceremonies celebrated by some North-American Indian tribes which Marcel Mauss described. Münch shows the similarities between that old “gift exchanging” model and the contemporary one with its focus on the psychosocial fundamentals of scientific praxis, and from this gradually derives the academic capitalism conception. His conclusion is the critical claim that science possesses its own, inalienable axiological autonomy and anthropological dimension, which degenerate in result of capitalism’s “colonisation” of science by means of state authority and money (here Münch refers to Jürgen Habermas’s philosophical argumentation). The author also offers many of his own reflections on the problem, which allows Münch’s analyses to be viewed in a somewhat broader context.

Abstract

Zjawiska dynamiczne – zarówno pochodzenia antropogenicznego, jak i naturalnego – występują zazwyczaj nieoczekiwanie i ujawniają się z dużą prędkością. Zmiany morfologii powierzchni terenu cechują się w takich przypadkach dużą gwałtownością, a rejony ich występowania nie podlegają najczęściej stałemu monitoringowi naziemnemu. Z tego względu kompleksowe opisanie skutków zaistnienia zjawisk tego typu – zwłaszcza po upływie pewnego czasu od ich wystąpienia – jest trudne, a często niemożliwe. J ednocześnie, dla badań nad charakterystykami jakościowymi i ilościowymi zjawisk dynamicznych, wartości i kierunki przemieszczeń powierzchni terenu będące ich wynikiem mają duże znaczenie. Zastosowanie satelitarnej interferometrii radarowej w badaniach zmian rzeźby powierzchni terenu wywołanych przez zjawiska takie jak trzęsienia ziemi jest już od pewnego czasu rutyną. N iemniej misja S entinel, która prowadzona jest przez Europejską Agencję Kosmiczną, stwarza nowe możliwości prowadzenia monitoringu na obszarach, na których wystąpiły zjawiska o charakterze dynamicznym. Autorzy postanowili sprawdzić, czy wstrząs pochodzenia górniczego generuje ruchy powierzchni terenu oraz zbadać, w jakiej odległości od epicentrum mają one miejsce oraz określić rząd wielkości ruchów tego typu. Analizy interferometryczne, które oparto na metodzie satelitarnej interferometrii różnicowej DInSAR na podstawie zobrazowań radarowych pochodzących z misji S entinel pozwoliły na uzyskanie odpowiedzi na te pytania.

Abstract

Regeneration – an integrated process of activities undertaken in the spatial, social and economic dimensions – should lead to the improvement of the living conditions of inhabitants of degraded urban areas. The European Union in 2007- 2013 allocated financial resources for this purpose in the form of JESSICA initiative which is based on financial engineering mechanism. Experiences gained so far allow conclusions to be drawn that JESSICA is a highly fi nancially-effi cient instrument but, however, not always delivers the desired outcomes in the spatial and social sphere. The scope of projects often is limited to infrastructural investments and does not reflect the complexity of regeneration process. In the article the authors analyse experiences of the five Polish regions with the use of JESSICA, point out main problems and formulate recommendations for sustainable urban policy.

Abstract

The present study was conducted in the lobbies of 16 Taiwanese urban hospitals to establish what contributes to the degree of noisiness experienced by patients and those accompanying them. Noise level measurements were then conducted by 15 min equivalent sound pressure levels (LAeq, 15m, dB) during daytime hours. The average LAeq itself was found to be poorly related to perceived noisiness. Levels variations were better correlated, more continual noise may actually be perceived as noisier. According to the findings of a multiple linear stepwise regression model (r = 0.91, R2 = 0.83), the 3 independent variables shown to have the largest effects on perceived noisiness were 1) 1/(L5 − L95), 2) effective duration of the normalized autocorrelation function (τe, h), of all LAeq, 15m over 9–17, and 3) percentile loudness, N5, 15m. These results resemble previous studies that had assumed that a larger fluctuation of noise level corresponds to less annoyance experienced for mixed traffic noise studied in a laboratory situation. As an advanced approach, for hospital noise that consisted of 12 audible noise events, subjective noisiness were evaluated by the noise time structure analyzed by autocorrelation with loudness and levels variation.

Abstract

Early blight disease caused by Alternaria sp. is one of the most devastating diseases of

Solanaceous crops widely distributed in Sudan. The aim of this study was to determine the

genetic variation among different Alternaria isolates recovered from different Solanaceae

crops showing typical symptoms of early blight disease. Infected leaves of tomato, potato,

eggplant and pepper were collected from different geographical zones in Sudan. The recovered

fungal isolates were identified to the genus level based on cultural and morphological

characteristics. Five representative isolates were sent to the CABI Bioscience, U.K. for confirmation.

The genetic relationship among the isolates was determined using the amplified

fragments length polymorphism (AFLP) technique and the generated data were used to

create similarity matrices using the PAST 3.01 software package. Dendrograms were constructed

based on Jaccard’s similarity coefficients. A total of 70 fungal isolates was recovered

from the tested plants and all of them showed morphological characteristics typical

of Alternaria spp. The conidia appeared in multiple-branched chains with spore sizes in

the range of 2.38−13.09 μm × 12.30−43.63 μm. Therefore, the isolates were identified as

Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. The identification was then confirmed by CABI.AFLPbased

dendrogram which revealed five clusters with a significant cophenetic correlation

coefficient (r = 0.834) between the dendrogram and the original similarity matrix irrespective

of their geographical origins. Eighteen (75%) of the Alternaria isolated from tomato

leaves were clustered together in cluster I and five isolates formed two separate clusters,

viz. cluster IV (T-Kh5 and T-H1) and cluster V (T-H4 and T-Med2). The remaining isolate,

T-Am5, grouped with one of the potato isolates in cluster III. The other isolates which were

recovered from potato, pepper and eggplants were all separated from the tomato isolates

in the largest cluster.

Abstract

Starting from the polyphonic enunciation present in Aixa de la Cruz’s novel, this article tries to bring out the complexity of the corresponding process of literary translation. With the achievement of the same outcome on the communicative and stylistic level through the mediation between the instances of the polyphonic dimension of the source text and the pragmatic implications in the Italian translation, the author of this article demonstrates how the relationship of “equivalence” between the two texts can be based on the utterance and its functions and on how the pragmatic and textual dimension of the reported discourse structurally supports the encounter between the two texts.

Abstract

The greatest difficulty in translating Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy into another language certainly consists in rendering as much as possible the richness of diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic registers and linguistic variants present in the poem. The language used by Dante expresses the various tones of the vernacular, also making use of various idioms, styles and literary genres that are also very different from each other. The different components brought to light both on a phonomorphological and lexical level often settle into linguistic allotropes, voices which, while going back to the same origin and retaining the same meaning, are formally differentiated. The abundance of allotropes is in fact a very important prerogative of the language of the Comedy. The article, focusing in particular on the phenomenon of allotropy in the original Italian, analyzes and compares the solutions provided by nineteenth‑century translators: in particular, Julian Korsak, Antoni Stanisławski, Edward Porębowicz, and the unpublished translation by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski.
