Abstract

Fourteen symposia on early/lower vertebrates have taken place over the last 50 years, usually at about four year

intervals. An average 60 participants have taken part at these symposia, with over one hundred occasionally. The

results of the symposia have been published in proceedings. The symposia started honoring E. A:son Stensiö and

E. Jarvik. Honors were taken up at the 11th symposium in Uppsala again. Since the 13th symposium a Stensiö

award is also given to young researchers in the field.

Abstract

Most antiseptic agents are intended for use on intact skin, e.g. for hand hygiene or skin preparation before any medical procedure. This paper presents multiple emulsion-based antiseptic agents as formulations for application to body surfaces with modified release rates.
Multiple emulsions with a co-encapsulated antiseptic (phenyl salicylate – salol) and an agent preventing microorganism growth (benzoic acid) were formed in a Couette–Taylor flow apparatus. Results confirmed the possibility of the release kinetics modification while two compounds were encapsulated in the internal droplets of emulsions to control the release rates and time of the dose release. The addition of benzoic acid as a second active compound of the encapsulation process in the internal phase of double O1/W/O2 emulsion reduced the time necessary for the total release of salol triggering a two-step release.

Abstract

The Internet based 'Web-Blight' service (http://www.web-blight.net) was initiated to provide an online warning and prognosis system for potato late blight in the countries around the Baltic Sea. In order to obtain comparable results, methods were harmonized and a set of interacting PC and Internet applications were developed for use by the project partners. Results regarding monitoring of potato late blight and evaluation of variety resistance against late blight (field tests) are presented for Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The use of the Internet to collect and present data was very successful, because information were "on the fly", helping farmers in their decisions about the timing of first applications and choice of fungicide type. Results show that it was possible to find early attacks as primary attacks (spots in the fields). In most cases attacks were initially found in home gardens and later in conventional fields. The growth stage at first attacks was often higher than 3 7 (BBCH) indicating that very early attacks caused by oospores in the soil was not a widespread problem. Local varieties were tested for late blight resistance in untreated field trials against four test varieties (Sava, Oleva, Danva and Kuras), Primary disease data were uploaded to Web-Blight via the Internet, and applications on the Web-Blight server calculated epidemiological variables such as delay of first symptoms and RAUDPC. Results indicated the presence of race-specific resistance in some varieties, e.g. Kuras, and that some varieties were originally misclassified according to resistance scale, e.g. Sante. The network about observation trials clearly showed that field test of variety resistance against late blight in time and space is important, taking into account the rapid evolution of Phytophthora infestans populations in Europe.

Abstract

Casting porosity is the main factor influencing the fatigue properties of Al-Si alloys. Due to the increasing use of aluminum castings, porosity characterization is useful for estimating their fatigue strength. In principle, a combination of metallographic techniques and statistical pore analysis is a suitable approach for predicting the largest defect size that is critical for the casting. Here, the influence of modifiers and casting technology on the largest pore size population in AlSi7Mg alloy specimens is obtained and discussed adopting the Murakami's approach. However, porosity evaluation is a challenge in the case of microshrinkage pores, which are frequently found in industrial castings. Their complicated morphology prevents a reliable definition of an equivalent defect size based on metallographic techniques. This contribution reports the application of X-ray tomography to the 3D reconstruction of real pores in cast Al-Si alloys and provides insight into the complication of microshrinkage pore sizing by metallography.

Abstract

This article considers the role of the sister figure in Bruno Jasieński's early verse. His poems as well as various facts from his biography leave little doubt that this highly significant role was filled by Irena Zysman, his sister. The key to the dialectic of her presence/absence in the poet's life and work is to be found in the concept of melancholy. Although Jasieński would hardly be credited with that kind of sensibility, the relationship with his sister does show that melancholy was part of his psychological makeup. Moreover, by bringing in psychoanalytical analysis, the article shows how his melancholy morphed into mania, a transformation which in a way fuelled his political engagement.
