Abstract

The paper discusses the discovery of a single lithic artefact from the Dąbrowa Tarnowska 37 site. The lithic, based on its technological and typological characteristics, can be associated with the Middle Palaeolithic. This is an important find due to the fact that, in the area of the Sandomierz Basin, settlement of that period is confirmed by only a few single finds discovered exclusively in the eastern and central parts of the basin. The lithic has been defined as a Levallois point, although a different interpretation, such as its being a by-product of Levallois core shaping, can not be excluded. It was made of Jurassic flint of undetermined provenance, probably originating from moraines. Precise dating of the find is not possible. It was been found on the surface of fluvioglacial deposit of South Polish glaciation (Elsterian) age. The chronological framework of this glaciation preceded the well-proven use of Levallois techniques in the south of Poland (Biśnik cave, Ciemna cave, Kraków-Zwierzyniec 1).

Abstract

Electrostatic prccipitators (ESP) arc the most commonly used devices for gas cleaning in the power industry. From the beginning of ESP usage on a commercial scale, it has been said that all swirls and turbulences should be eliminated from the gas flow, approaching uniform gas distribution in an ESP chamber. Application of CFO (Computer Fluid Dynamics) methods in electrostatic precipitation caused radical changes in views on the role of the gas flow. Series of non-uniform gas flows was then indicated, causing an increase in ESP efficiency. This paper is a review of the gas flow distributions used in ESP and their influence on ESP efficiency. The results of computer analysis presented in this paper show that diversification of gas velocity in the ESP chamber leads to efficiency improvement for shorter zones; however, for longer zones it causes an efficiency drop. The efficiency raise owing to diversification of gas flow profile is a consequence of exponential gas velocity - efficiency dependence.

Abstract

A large sample of more than 1500 individuals of scavenging Amphipoda from fur seal carcass was studied. Six species have been identified. The two most abundant species, Abyssorchomene plebs and Waldeckia obesa, are sublittoral, necrophagous amphipods that could attack the carcass when submerged in the sea. After stranding on the beach they became an attractive food source for birds eating not only the seal tissues but also the scavenging amphipods. The species composition of the present sample as well as earlier data on Antarctic tern stomach content and baited traps taken in the same area and at the same time agreed quite well. These observations confirm the expectation that Antarctic tern feeds on necrophagous amphipods picked out from carcasses stranding on the sea shore.
