Abstract

Reduced activity in all life areas due to the coronavirus pandemic is a good moment to reflect on the unfavorable trends in the redevelopment and expansion of Polish cities, especially Krakow. The article draws attention to the fact that the tourist and business attractiveness of Krakow is the cause of excessive densification of the urban fabric with new investments. The subordination of the historic downtown to the tourist function, in turn, violates some of the timeless values of Krakow and limits the participation of residents in the use of the historic downtown. In conclusion, attention was drawn to the need for correction of the current spatial activities in favor of sustainable principles of shaping the urban environment.

Abstract

The article deals with 8 etymologies of dialectal lexemes (along with their variant forms and derivatives) in three dialects of Croatian: drlo and drlog ‘mess, old things scattered’, krtog ‘lair; mess’, madvina (medvina) ‘lair, den’, mlađ / mlaj ‘silt’, sporak / sporǝk ‘hill, slope’, tušek ‘empty grain; undeveloped corn cob’, zavet i zavetje ‘sheltered place’, žužnja ‘leather shoelace; string; ribbon; belt’.

Abstract

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change obliges member countries to make an inventory of greenhouse gases emission and, among others, an inventory of fugitive emission from coal mining system. To comply with this obligation, basing on 1992 data. Poland has evaluated so-called "emission factors" for identified sources of methane emission. According to IPCC/OECD guidelines, the emission factors multiplied by coal output allow simple evaluation of methane emission. Since the time when the emission factors were evaluated in 1994, coal industry in Poland has undergone major organisational and technical changes. At the same time significant development of basic knowledge on geology of methane in coal-bearing strata have occurred. Both these facts make the emission factors evaluated earlier inaccurate. A wide range of research indispensable for accurate evaluation of new emission factors is described in the paper. It is also recommended in the paper that by the time the research results are known, the improved emission factors. which take into account organisational changes of mining industry should be used. Methane emission from coal mining system in 1999 evaluated using those emission factors equals 527,889 Gg.

Abstract

Cracks in concrete are inevitable but fortunately cracking enables the structures to get rid of its bending moment peaks. The reduction is due to the redistribution of the load induced moments and cut of the temperatureimposed moments. However, cracking becomes completely harmless if the crack widths are controlled properly by reinforcement. In this regard a method for crack width prediction is presented in this paper which thanks its reliability is widely accepted in the standards EN 13084, CICIND and DIN 1056.

Abstract

The paper presents research on the influence of grain size of selected coals and their structural parameters on the diffusion coefficient and methane sorption isotherms. Two coals from Polish hard coal mines, differing in the coal rank, were tested. Sorption isotherms for methane were determined. An unconventional sequence of pressures 0→0.1→0→0.5→0→1.5 MPa was employed to assess the speed of achieving sorption equilibrium at different pressures. The studies of CH4 accumulation kinetics were performed on various grain classes of the tested coals. Both the sorption capacity of coal and the diffusion coefficient proved to be highly sensitive to the experimental methodology. Critical measurement parameters in terms of determining the diffusion coefficient concerning the assumptions of the Crank model were indicated. The influence of the equivalent radius of coal grain on the process kinetics was demonstrated. The stepwise pressure increase factor was examined in the context of minimising the impact of sorption isotherm non-linearity on the results. The importance of the width of the grain class of coals was determined to reduce their maceral inhomogeneities. These factors are the most common reason that makes it difficult to quantitatively compare diffusion coefficient values.

Abstract

The paper presents results of investigations of bottom sediments in Hornsund, Wijdefjorden and Isfjorden as well as of the shelf around the Bjornoya. carried out in 1982—1985 by a continuous seismic profiling. Geophysic structures and bottom sediments on the bedrock to a depth of 170 ms have been recognized, particularly in the Hornsund region. The following seismoacoustic units have been distinguished: unit A — bedrock, unit В — till and/or compacted glaciogenic deposit, unit С — glaciomarine ice-front deposit, unit D — glaciomarine mud. These results allowed to present a model of glaciomarine sedimentation in a fiord, fed by warm tidewater glaciers.
