Abstract

The practical applications of bacteriophages are associated with the problems related to the intensification, optimization of process production of this biomaterial and the search for new methods of production. The production of bacteriophages requires a fine balance between the dynamic growth of the bacteriophage and the host. The electromagnetic field (EMF) is a promising biotechnological method for the process production of bacteriophages. This study evaluates the use of various types of EMF to enhance the process. It was found that the process production of bacteriophages is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the influence of various types of EMF on the proliferation process of bacteria (host) was analyzed. Secondly, the process production of bacteriophage was implemented for the optimal infection conditions under the action of the various types of EMF. Moreover, the study demonstrated that the most effective bacteriophage production was the process with the application of the rotating magnetic field (RMF), pulsed magnetic field (PMF) and the static magnetic field (SMF) with negative polarity.

Abstract

Ceramic waste generated by demolition and manufacturing processes is a kind of widely discharged solid waste; its sustainable use can reduce resource extraction, energy consumption, and carbon emissions, thereby reducing the environmental impact. In this study, ceramic powder and ceramic sand were prepared using waste ceramic wall tiles. By using three water-to-binder ratios of 0.30, 0.32, and 0.34, five ceramic powder replacement rates of 10% to 50%, and completely using ceramic sand as the fine aggregate, specimens with large differences in mechanical properties were prepared. Firstly, the compressive strength was investigated. On this basis, hybrid fibers were employed to strengthen the new matrix material, and its bending resistance was experimentally studied. It was found that the incorporation of ceramic powder reduced the compressive strength of the matrix. The water-binder ratio significantly affects compressive strength at an early age. The effect of PVA fiber on improving the ductility of the new composite is distinct. Increasing the amount of steel fiber can effectively enhance the bending bearing capacity. With a ceramic powder dosage of 50%, the new composite has shown ductile failure characteristics, even with low total fiber content. The bending properties of this new composite material, which makes extensive use of ceramic waste, are well adjustable. The bearing capacity and ductility balance can be achieved with the steel fiber content of 1% and the PVA fiber content of 1.2% to 1.50%.

Abstract

Prediction of soft soil sub-grades settlement has been a big challenge for geotechnical engineers that are responsible for the design of roadbed embankment. The characteristics of low strength, poor permeability, high water contents, and high compressibility are dominant in soft soils, which result in a huge settlement in the case of long-term loading. The settlement prediction in soft soil subgrades of Jiehui Expressway A1, Guangdong, China, is the focus of this study. For this purpose, the necessary data of settlement is collected throughout the project execution. The numerical analysis is conducted by using the Richards model based on Linear Least Squares Iteration (LLS-I) method to calculate and predict the expected settlement. The traditional settlement prediction methods, including the hyperbolic method, exponential curve method, and pearl curve method, are applied on field settlement data of soft soil subgrades of Jiehui Expressway A1. The results show that the Richards model based on Linear Least Squares Iteration (LLS-I) method has high precision, and it has proven to be a better option for settlement prediction of soft soil sub-grades. The model analysis indicates that the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) can be minimized as compared to other soft soil sub-grades settlement prediction methods. Hence, Richards's model-based LLS-I method has a capability for simulation and settlement prediction of soft soil subgrades.
