Abstract

Tunisian Arabic, in addition to words inherited and borrowed from Arabic, has a considerable number of loanwords taken from such languages as Berber, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, French, and English. The main purpose of this paper is the inquiry into the words of French origin, since it is from French that Tunisian Arabic has borrowed a considerable amount of loanwords, a process that continues especially in the fields of technology, medicine, and internet communication. Although French loanwords have already been subjected to various and even detailed investigations, it does not seem that this problem has been sufficiently elucidated, in particular from a theoretical point of view. Several proposals for different approaches to French loanwords in Tunisian are offered here for consideration.

Abstract

In this article, a new interpretation of the so-called Cyrillic penny has been proposed. The coin in question was struck for Duke Boleslaus Chrobry (‘the Brave’) in Greater Poland, probably in the last months of 1018. The reason for the revision of earlier hypotheses is the bulla of a Kyivan prince, Iaroslav the Wise that was uncovered in Novgorod Velikiĭ and dated to c.1018. The bulla differs in its iconography from other tenth and eleventh century lead seals from the area of Rus´. The close similarity between the fi gure of Iaroslav on his bulla and the depiction of the Polish duke on his Cyrillic penny as well as the contemporaneity of the two objects, leads us to presume that the penny played some role in propaganda activities associated with the capture of Kyiv by Boleslaus in 1018.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine critically a common tendency which underlies the reflection of the Polish author Witold Gombrowicz and the German philosopher Martin Heidegger. In the core of this common tendency lies the reflection on the world as such. Because of the relational structure which reveals itself to man when he is placed in its center ( resp. Dasein), both Gombrowicz and Heidegger view the world as a necessary space which enables an understanding of ourselves and of everything that surrounds us. If the possibility of self‑understanding can be realized only on the basis of that world, the question about the possibility of finding ourselves in this world is essential. The world determines us, forms us and forces us to accept the resulting consequences. However, neither Gombrowicz nor Heidegger intended to reject or to destroy this form of self‑understanding. They intimated – each in his own manner – a modified way of relating to the world and to one’s own self.
