Abstract

The Cyclotron Center, delivering proton therapy for certain types of cancer, opened recently in Bronowice, Kraków. We talk to Prof. Marek Jeżabek, Director of the Niewodniczański Institute for Nuclear Physics, PAS, and Prof. Andrzej Kawecki, radiotherapist, clinical oncologist and vice-chairman of the Scientific Board at the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Institute of Oncology.

Abstract

The paper presents numerical and experimental research on glulam delamination in a double lap connection with predominant shear stresses. Laboratory tests and wide literature survey enabled to determine timber and glue joint parameters. Cohesive zone theory, generally used for epoxy matrix and fiber reinforced composites, was adopted to modelling glue layer delamination in glulam elements. Numerical models were validated with laboratory tests.

Abstract

People living in buildings may be exposed to dynamic actions. In the diagnosis and design of buildings there is an increasing need of taking into account these activities and verification of compliance of the building requirements for vibration comfort of people residing in buildings. This study presents the results of analysis of such criteria in the following standards: Polish PN-88/B-02171 [1], British BS 6472-1 [2], German DIN 4150 [3], and ISO international standards [4,5]. Basing on the results of this analysis and on the review of selected items of literature, the application of standards recommendations in diagnosis and design of buildings, as well as areas for further research on this subject is indicated. This article is an extended version of the conference paper [6] presented on the conference Urban Transport 2011.

Abstract

Faith and culture remain closely connected. Faith that does not become a culture is not the belief of the original. Nevertheless, we can observe two behavioral and confrontational and cooperative models over the history of these two relationships. Confrontation is a kind of cultural opposition to faith. Cooperation is aimed at comprehensive cooperation. The article analyzes the history of these relations which together with the new person’s awareness of the Church was able to develop a new concept of culture through which the Church will not only try to remove accommodation but also try to root in the world. Doing that, Church doesn’t forget about the evangelizing nature of the culture and communicative character of faith. Faith in Christ can be a source of culture with a C hristian profile, however, the point of departure for culture will always be human and not faith. The task of Culture is to express who a person is. Emphasizing this anthropology that portrays a man as a cultural centre goes hand in hand with presenting the human person as a picture of God. The above statement is the summit of personalistic anthropology and the source of the greatest human dignity. In this way, anthropology and Christology are as close as possible to each other.

Abstract

This article presents a wearable system that localizes people in the indoor environment, using data from inertial sensors. The sensors measure the parameters of human motion, tracking the movements of the torso and foot. For this purpose, they were integrated with shirt and the shoe insole. The values of acceleration measured by the sensors are sent via Bluetooth to a smartphone. The localization algorithm implemented on the smartphone, presented here, merges data from the shirt and the shoe to track the steps made by the user and filter out the localization errors caused by movements the shirt and torso. The experimental verification of the algorithm is also presented.

Abstract

The article presents detailed guidelines for the nonlinear modelling of wood–CFRP beams with full cross-section using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Reviewing the literature has shown that behaviour of such composites is a current research topic, undertaken by many scientists. Complex numerical models made in the Simulia ABAQUS software are the basis for modelling recommendations. Properties of the materials consider the orthotropy and plasticity of wood and CFRP tapes, and the stiffness of adhesive layers with delamination. Results of laboratory experiments, got for a statistically significant number of specimens, confirm the model assumptions. This research paper provides a rich source of knowledge and experiences for scientists and engineers, who deal with mechanics of wood–CFRP composites. The uniqueness of the presentation lies in the detailed description of the complex numerical model. Specification comprises the steps necessary to do complete and successful calculations. The model is suitable for analysing the behaviour of wood–CFRP composites in different reinforcement configurations.

Abstract

The article presents research on modelling fracture in softwood bent elements. This kind of timber is the one most exploited for construction. Authors present a brief review on the subject with emphasis on three basic attempts: Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM), Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) and Hill’s Function (HF). Proposed 3D solution bases on Hill’s Function applied in the ABAQUS FEM code. The new idea includes isolating theoretical compression and tension zones in a model. Then, it is possible to distinguish between compressive and tensile strength and predict a real behaviour of bent elements. Introducing general dependencies between material properties leads to the need of determining only longitudinal elastic modulus (EL) and modulus of rupture (MOR). It is practical because these parameters are the main reported in a scientific and technical literature. Authors describe all of the assumptions in details. The experimental tests and Digital Image Correlation method (DIC) validate the FEM model.
