Abstract

The results of research of nitrate concentration and loads in the Strzcgomka River have been presented. The researches were carried out in two sampling points: on the inflow and outflow or Dobromierz reservoir. Nitrate concentrations and loads have been described. The influence or reservoir on water quality of the Strzegomka River has been characterised. Great seasonal trends of analysed indicators have been indicated. The influence of improper use of organic fertiliser on the Strzegomka River water quality and eutrophication of Dobromierz reservoir has been pointed out.

Abstract

The distribution of heavy metals in the bonom sediments has been determined, It has been shown that they are spaciously differentiated. The differentiation is a result of water movement, eutroficat ion, bioaccurnulation and anthropoprcsion processes. As a result of specific water movement the area of intensity of the heavy metals accumulation was created. This area (about 150 ha) is located in the northwest part of the reservoir. The maximal concentrations of heavy metals for this region are: for cadmium 30 mg Cd/kg, for nickel 55 mg Ni/kg, for chromium 130 mg Cr/kg, for lead 160 mg Pb/kg, for copper 1000 mg Cu/kg, for zinc 1300 mg Zn/kg. The localization of the most polluted areas is essential for possible reclamation procedures to improve water and overall ecosystem quality.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of the studies on a degree of pollution and sanitary-bacteriological stale of bottom sediments of Wigry Lake in I 998 and 1999. Total Viable Count at 20°C (TYC 20°C) and Total Viable Count at 37°C (TYC 37°C) were used as indicators of pollution, while Total Coli (TC), Faecal Coli (FC), Faecal Streptococcus - Enterococcus (FS) and Clostridium perfringens - as indicators of the sanitary stale. Bottom sediment samples wen: collected from 3 sites situated in the centre of the lake and from 6 sites in the vicinity of the lake shore. Sanely and gravel offshore bottom sediments showed less degree or pollution than muddy bottom sediments collected from the centre or the lake. Higher numbers of anaerobic spore-forming and sulphite reducing bacteria (Clostridium pcrfringens) found at sites 1 and 2 in the vicinity of the mouth of Czarna Hańcza River lo Lake Wigry. At those places a higher bacteriological pol lution of bottom sediments samples was found.

Abstract

The effect of total energy consumption and electric energy consumption on cumulated noxiousness index (SWU) value of coke production process, steel rolled goods and PVC windows profiles is presented in the paper. Using the sequential analysis it was proved that in SWU of the prediction process, from the stage of law materials to the final product, the onerousness connected with energy consumption amounts from 70% up to 81%, whereas that connected with electric energy directly or indirectly consumed - from 60% up to 77%.

Abstract

Laboratory works on combustion of some organic compounds as air pollutants in presence of platinum, palladium and manganese catalysts at various oxygen concentrations were carried out. Several mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen contained vapours of hexane, isooctane, methanol, acetone ethyl acetate and toluene were examined. The experimental results show that conversion efficiency of 95% might be reached, despite of oxygen concentration decreasing to 5%.

Abstract

Using the infra-red telcdetection methods for measurement of waler temperature it has been shown that hydrodynamic conditions which are a result of anthropopressiou, as the supplementary water mass movement, impose square differential temperature conditions of limnic ecosystem. The Rybnik dam reservoir shows, that effect of anthropopression expressed as the thermal pollutant and itrareservoir water movement is stronger than the natural limnological factors for the type and location of the reservoir. For such situation, when the mixion of the water mass caused by anthropopression is stronger than natural water movement, the author proposes the term "anthropomixion".

Abstract

[n the paper the cationic equilibrium in the leaves of aquatic plants Nymphaea alba L. and Nuphar lutea (L.) Sibith. & Sm. was studied according lo Czarnowski method. Plant material was collected in 25 sites from littoral of fourteen eutrophic lakes of Pojezierze Leszczyńskie in West Poland. After the leaves had been cleaned, dryed and pulverized, the concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, S, Fe, Sr, V, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cd, Al, Co, Pb, Zn, and Ba in them were determined. Next, the relative concentrations of the examined elements (concentration of each element in relation to the sum of all elements) and their relationships were calculated. The values of weighed sums of square roots of the relative cation concentrations in Nymphaea alba L. and Nuphar lutea (L.) Sibith. & Sm. varied from 13.2 to 13.8 and from 13.5 to 14.0, respectively. These values were higher than 12.5 given by Czarnowski because of high calcium and sodium concentrations. Significant positive correlations between relative concentrations of potassium and nitrogen, magnesium and zinc, cadmium and lead, iron and copper, iron and aluminium, aluminium and manganese, cadmium and manganese, cadmium and nickel, cadmium and zinc, as well as nickel and zinc were found, which proves the evidence for existence of synergism between these ions. However, substantial negative correlation between potassium and calcium testified to antagonism between these cations.

Abstract

Groundwater quality depends on many factors, among which public water supply systems and wastewater infrastructure in built-up areas plays a very important role. Analyses of influence of designed water supply and sewage network in Maciejowa village on the ground- and surface water quality have been the main aim of the paper. A mathematical model based on deterministic description of groundwater flow and migration of pollutants has been applied. An influence of various scenarios of drinking water/wastewater system development and management on pollution loads entering water environment were simulated. Recommendations regarding the sequence of individual piping systems construction were formulated to assure the best protection of water resources.

Abstract

Sewage and sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant were analyzed for 16 EPA-PAH. The measurements were conducted to investigate the effect of different treatment stages on PAH content in wastewater and sewage sludge. PAH loads in influent, mechanically and biologically treated sewage, as well as in raw, digested and dewatered sludge were calculated. Mechanical and biological treatment was found to remove 85% of PAH from the influent. Despite of this a daily PAH load introduced into environment was high, and reached 37% of the PAH load in the influent. In sewage it was equal to 46 g PAH-lid, with carcinogenic PAH content of 12%. In waste sludge (filter pressed sludge and sand from sand trap) PAH total load reached 68 gid with 17% of carcinogenic PAH.
