Abstract

The Author presents main tendencies in the development of the "Annales" school from the perspective of its modem development and actual critical view presented by its members. The review of tendencies follows an analysis of recent curricula of the studies in history at the Ecole des Haute Etudes en Sciences Socia/es (EHESS). The Author compares these curricula with the system of history teaching in other universities in France, as well as in Poland.

Abstract

On the basis of mathematical modeling of fluid flow in vortex devices verification of use of detached-eddy simulation method in the swirling flows in vortex chamber superchargers is made. Research of a flow with use of different turbulence models was made for vortex chamber supercharger in two working points of the characteristic: with the open exit channel and closed. Verification has been spent on integrated parameters, and also on kinematic, by comparison of static pressure value of on the top end cover of the device. It is received that the hybrid turbulence model DES does not allow, as well as model SST precisely to predict value of vacuum on an axis of the vortex chamber. The error makes an order of 20 %. However, DES predicts almost correct, on 20 % big, than model SST, values of vacuum on an axis in a throat axial diffuser on an input in the vortex chamber. Besides, by means of DES it is possible to describe more adequately unsteady structures near to an axis of the vortex chamber, and also vortex core precession that does not allow to make SST turbulence model. By optimization of vortex devices, and vortex chamber superchargers in particular, simulation time essentially is better to use SST turbulence model with rotation-curvature correction.

Abstract

Abstract

Catalytic properties of activated carbons oxidized, treated with N-compounds, and promoted with copper were studied in selective catalytic reduction NOX by ammonia (NH3-SCR). The modification of the catalysts consisted of a series of steps (pre-oxidation of activated carbon, impregnation with urea, impregnation with copper). The physicochemical properties of the obtained samples were determined using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, and low-temperature N2 sorption. The modification with copper improved the catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts. All the functionalized carbon doped with copper reached more than 90% of NO conversion and CO2 did not exceed 240 ppm at 220 ◦C. The sample doped with 5 wt.% Cu had the maximum NO conversion of 98% at 300 ◦C. The maximum N2O concentration detected for the same sample was only 55 ppm, which confirmed its selectivity.

Abstract

In the last few years, cationic layered clays, including bentonites have been investigated as potential catalysts for SCR DeNOx systems. In this work, bentonite as the representative of layered clays was modified in order to obtain an alternative, low-cost NH3–SCR catalyst. Samples of raw clay were activated with HCl or HNO3, treated with C2H2O4 and subsequently pillared with alumina by the ion- exchange. Afterwards, the modified materials were impregnated with iron and copper. The obtained catalysts were characterized by XRD and FT-IR. SCR catalytic tests carried out over analyzed samples indicated the conversion of NO of approximately 90% for the most active sample. The type of acid used for modification and the type of active phase strongly influenced the catalytic properties of the analyzed materials.

Abstract

Three decades have passed since Magdalena Abakanowicz presented her concept of Bois de Nanterre — Arboreal Architecture, in response to a call for a broader reflection on approaches to urban landscaping and a reinterpretation of the meaning and evolution of the Grand Axis in Paris. This paper analyses the work presented by the artist from an urban planning perspective. It shows how the rich and multi-layered metaphor for the 21st-century city, embodied in the concept of the Bois de Nanterre, offers a pioneering and radical lesson for addressing contemporary urban problems.

Abstract

Polish musical criticism of 19th century is a fascinating research field for musicologists, music theorists, as well as literary scholars. They can find there a wealth of texts whose expressive style tries to emulate the homage paid to the great virtuosos of the time in poetry. While Frederick Chopin and the violinist Karol Lipiński held sway over captive audiences, there was yet another musician whose name featured prominently in reviews and poems. It was Stanisław Szczepanowski, the great guitarist, whose concerts gave rise to numerous reviews representing the romantic school of musical criticism. This paper examines some of those reviews as well as two poems dedicated to Szczepanowski, one by Teofil Lenartowicz and the other by Władysław Syrokomla.
