Abstract

Light sources and luminaires made in the LED technology are nowadays widely used in industry and at home. The use of these devices affects the operation of the power grid and energy efficiency. To estimate this impact, it is important to know the electrical parameters of light sources and luminaires, especially with the possibility of dimming. The article presents the results of measurements of electrical parameters as well as luminous flux of dimmable LED luminaires as a function of dimming and RMS supply voltage. On the basis of the performed measurements, a model of LED luminaire was developed for prediction of electrical parameters at set dimming values and RMS values of the supply voltage. The developed model of LED luminaire has 2 inputs and 26 outputs. This model is made based on 26 single models of electrical parameters, whose input signals are supply and control voltages. The linear regression method was used to develop the models. An example of the application of the developed model for the prediction of electrical parameters simulating the operation of an LED luminaire in an environment most similar to real working conditions is also presented.

Abstract

Thanks to a very high luminous efficacy of LED lamps (over 160 lm/W) they are the most preferred light sources in lighting applications today. The useful lifetime of LED modules exceeds 50,000 hours. Chromatic parameters of lamps making use of SSL (Solid State Lighting) have already equalled classic solutions, although they were noticeably worse not so long ago. High values of the Colour Rendering Index (CRI) and ease of control over the luminous flux cause that lamps with LEDs have become very attractive solutions. Today, the most important problem concerns LED drivers supplied from the 230 VAC mains. The lifetime of switched-mode converters, including electrolytic capacitors, is considerably shorter than that of LEDs. This paper discusses the features of alternative drivers for LED modules which are supplied directly from the 230 VAC mains and do not contain any electrolytic capacitors. In particular, power factor and efficiency of lamps with one or two LED strings are analysed and some hints concerning optimal design of such lamps are given. A unique feature of this work is a detailed analysis of harmonics contents in the supply current of such drivers, proving their conformity with the relevant standard. Finally, some problems associated with flicker resulting from the considered type of supply are mentioned.

Abstract

The development of technology and design of light management systems remains dynamic. Among all the benefits offered by these systems, the most valuable might definitely be the possibility of saving energy consumption. Knowing the value of energy savings is the key factor that users need to know before deciding to use a lighting management system (the type of light management system). For this purpose, it is useful to simulate the operation of the lighting control system, for example in the DIALux program. Such simulation helps evaluate potential savings in electricity consumption using the proposed lighting control system. In the DIALux program, it is possible to change the luminous flux value of luminaires. In such a case, it becomes possible to semi-simulate the light management system’s operation as we don’t receive actual information on reducing installed power of the lighting system during reduction of the luminous flux value of luminaires. This article shows what type of technical data are important to use for the DIALux program to properly and accurately simulate light management systems and to receive accurate data on energy saving. It also presents the results of photometrical and electric parameter measurements (Φ – luminous flux, P – power, PF – power factor, THDi – total harmonic distortion of current). The article discusses the power control characteristics obtained on the basis of these measurements and explores the source of differences between simulation of energy saving calculations and real measured energy savings. An existing lighting control system installed in an office reception area was used to compare calculations with the real value of energy consumption reduction. The impact of electronic power and control systems on electrical network parameters is also an important problem mentioned in this article. It also explores the effect of power regulation of LED luminaires and LED modules on the value of the power factor and total harmonic distortion (current) value (THDi).

Abstract

This article presents some results of work on the selection of the most promising types of lamps for various objects in industry, in commercial and residential buildings. It is shown that the use of a particular type of lamp depends on the conditions of a particular country (the cost of credit resources, the availability of different types of lamps on the market, and government incentives or restrictions), as well as on the conditions of the specific object (cost of lamps, duration of operation during the day, tariffs for energy resources, the cost of equipment and its installation (dismantling, utilization), the cost of replacing the equipment after leaving it, the term of service of various types of lamps). It is also necessary to consider the possible risks of changes in tariffs and the cost of money.

Abstract

The application of solid-state light sources in luminaires creates a new quality in illumination design works. In a confrontation with a commonly used but relatively unattractive flood method, the use of small-size luminaires allows one to present an illuminated architectural object in a more attractive way in the evening and at night. In this case, it is possible to apply the principles of illumination described in the literature, especially the principle of height amplification and the principle of depth amplification. The conceptual work of illumination with the use of a large number of small-size luminaires does not require the use of supporting graphical tools, but the specification of actual lighting equipment using only polygonal samples in this case is not possible. The paper presents selected issues of the key stages of the completed work. Using specialized computer software, a geometric model of the architectural object has been developed, facade materials have been parameterized, models of small-size illuminating equipment have been selected and, finally, calculations of luminance distribution on illuminated surfaces have been carried out. As a result of computer work, luminance distributions and photorealistic visualizations of illuminations from defined main directions of observation were obtained. The Lubomirski Palace in Przemysl is an example of the architectural object indicated for detailed works.

Abstract

In literature, it is known that a Light Emitting Diode (LED) could be used as a light sensor. It is also known that its emitted light spectrum and sensitivity spectrum can be partially overlapped. This work presents how commercial LEDs can be used as light emitters and simultaneously as sensors of the reflected portion of the light emitted by themselves. The realized devices present a unique characteristic: the transmitter and the receiver coincide spatially as they are the same device. This ensures the perfect overlapping between transmission and reception radiation lobes that could provide many benefits in several applications like as distance measurements or image sensors. Some simple electronic configurations that use LEDs as detectors of their own emitted light are presented. It has been also demonstrated how these LEDsTx-Rx can work as image sensors by acquiring an image of a simple test object, and how they can realize distance sensors with respect to other known techniques. Further advantages can be obtained by realizing LEDTx-Rx array in single integrated devices. With the realization of such devices, it will be also possible to experiment new constructive solutions for commonly used applications, without the need of using separate emitter and receiver.

Abstract

The article proves that common LEDs may act as photodetectors with limited sensitivity, if they are polarized with an appropriate reverse voltage. The measured responsivities are ranged between 0.002 and 0.156 A/W and they depend on the LED type. The only one exception are white (phosphorescent) LEDs which do not exhibit any photosensitivity. There have also shown that a bandwidth of LEDs, which were examined in a role of photodetectors, is of a few tens of MHz, which is an order of magnitude greater than their modulation bandwidth as transmitters. The reasons of the observed LEDs behaviour are explained theoretically. The obtained results are indicated that some of them may be used as both transmitters and receivers in the VLC links working in a bi-directional half-duplex mode.

Abstract

In recent years, GaN-based light-emitting diode (LED) has been widely used in various applications, such as RGB lighting system, full-colour display and visible-light communication. However, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of green LEDs is significantly lower than that of other visible spectrum LED. This phenomenon is called “green gap”. This paper briefly describes the physical mechanism of the low IQE for InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) green LED at first. The IQE of green LED is limited by the defects and the internal electric field in MQW. Subsequently, we discuss the recent progress in improving the IQE of green LED in detail. These strategies can be divided into two categories. Some of these methods were proposed to enhance crystal quality of InGaN/GaN MQW with high In composition and low density of defects by modifying the growth conditions. Other methods focused on increasing electron-hole wave function overlap by eliminating the polarization effect.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the time-dependent effectiveness of photo-stimulation against bovine sperm cells using a multi-wavelength LED (Light Emitting Diode). Spermatological parameters were evaluated for viability, acrosome structure and motility. In addition, the effect of photo-stimulation on frozen-thawed sperm cells subjected to in vitro capacitation was evaluated in terms of changes in mitochondrial membrane potential. The study consisted of two separate experiments and a total of 32 sperm samples obtained from separate bulls were used. All sperm samples were obtained from Holstein bulls using an artificial vagina. Semen was diluted to a final concentration of 92 x 106 spermatozoa per ml in 0.25 ml straws. The sperm cells were frozen using the conventional method. Straws were kept in a 37°C water bath for 20 seconds and diluted 1:4 in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) to eliminate the potentially deleterious effect of glycerol, the main permeable cryoprotectant in the freezing medium for bull sperm. This dilution also helped in the evaluation of sperm quality parameters. In the first experiment, whereas the 15-10-15 showed no differences with the control, other treatments such as 10-10-10, 5-5-5, and 3-1-3 exhibited significantly higher percentages of viable spermatozoa at 24h. The results obtained for acrosome integrity were pretty much similar to those observed in the sperm viability assessment. In effect, while the treatment consisting of 15-10-15 had no positive effects, shorter treatments exerted a much more positive effect. The percentages of acrosome-intact spermatozoa in 2-1-2 and 1-1-1 were significantly higher than those obtained in the control. The significant differences in mitochondrial membrane potential were observed at 0, 2, 4 and 24h post-photo-stimulation in all treatments, except 15-10-15. The highest increase in the percentage of spermatozoa exhibiting high mitochondrial membrane potential was found in 10-10-10, 5-5-5 and 3-1-3 treatments. With regard to total and progressive motility, whereas 10-10-10 was the best regime, 5-5-5 and 3-1-3 treatments also had a positive effect. However, 15-10-15 appeared to have a stimulating effect upon progressive motility at 2h and 4h but later declined and showed no significant differences with regard to the control at 24h. In the second experiment, not immediately after thawing but after having been kept at room temperature for up to 24h, it was observed that there was no statistical difference in terms of viability, acrosome integrity and total/progressive motility between photostimulation and the control group. This indicates that photo- stimulation is less able to exert a beneficial effect when post-thawed sperm are not immediately stimulated. As a result it was determined that photo-stimulation at a pattern of 10-10-10, 5-5-5, 3-1-3 and, to a lesser extent 2-1-2, increases the resilience of frozen-thawed bull sperm when applied upon thawing.

Abstract

The paper presents a simple method of measuring the luminous flux value dedicated to LED light sources. This method uses information about a spatial radiation pattern of the lighting source under test and the results of illuminance measurements at the axis of this source. The method is described and the results of the measurements obtained using this method and the classical method are compared and discussed. Tests have been carried out for LED modules of different geometries. The measurement error of the considered method is analysed.

Abstract

More and more street lighting deployments use LED technology as a light source. Unfortunately, the new technology also brings some challenges with it that remain unnoticed until installed at scale. This article presents issues related to capacitive reactive power consumed by LED luminaires. The problem is even more profound if the luminaire is dimmed, because it consumes capacitive reactive power, which is very undesirable in the power system. Countermeasures in terms of reactive power compensation for a luminaire working with variable power and their effects are also presented. The article also contains the results of the harmonic analysis of the LED luminaires current for full power and dimmed operation.

Abstract

We aimed to investigate whether educational activities in the form of guided tours through an exhibition change the appreciation of art when young experts (i.e. first-years students of artistic faculties) view contemporary art in a gallery. Participants viewed and assessed the artworks presented at the gallery twice – before and after taking part in a guided tour led by a gallery educator. The guide-led tour increased both understanding and ratings (the hedonic value) of the artworks, which is consistent with the “effort after meaning” hypothesis and also with the model of aesthetic appreciation and aesthetic judgments. Our results suggest that the reception of works of art by young experts is changed when they are under the influence of extensive contextual information.

Abstract

Light pollution has a detrimental effect on astronomy. Artificial light emitted from outdoor lighting increases the brightness of the night sky, making it difficult to observe astronomical objects. The spectral power distribution of artificial light sources is one of the key factors determining how much the night sky is deteriorated by light pollution. The ongoing replacement of discharge lamps with LED sources may have a major impact on astronomy because LED spectra usually cover the entire visible radiation range. This paper provides an analysis of the impact of LED sources with correlated color temperature in the range from 1000 K to approximately 10 000 K on visual and instrumental astronomical observations. For each analyzed artificial source, the Starlight Contamination Degree (SCD) index, i.e. a quantity that allows for quick evaluation of the impact of the sources on the night sky, is calculated. The reflection of artificial light from different ground surfaces and its scattering in the atmosphere was included in the calculation of the SCD index. LED lamps with very low values of correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI) were found to possibly have a similar or even smaller impact on astronomical observations than sodium discharge lamps. Moreover, professional astronomical observations are more affected by LED lamps than visual observations, even for lamps with the lowest CCT and CRI. Thus, additional measures (e.g. reducing lumen output) should be applied to protect observational conditions. The results of the study help to assess which LED lamps can be used, and which should be avoided in the protection zones around astronomical observing sites.
