The aim of this article is to present the ephemera related to Sandomierz — either by content or place of the publication — whose distinctive trait was the use of the word 'jednodniówka', or single issue, in the title, the subtitle or the contents. Chronologically, this survey ranges from 1918, the date of the first print of this kind to be published, to the last one (known to the au-thors) dated 2002 and does not cover publications in languages other than Polish. The source material gathered in accordance with these criteria comprises a total of 34 single issues, of which ten appeared in the pre-war period and twenty-four after World War II. Themati-cally, ten of them can be classified as political or concerned with social issues; eight are products of trade unions or other professional associations; twelve are aimed at the younger generation; and each of the remaining four has a focus of its own (i.e. military, historical, religious, literary-artistic). In this article all of the single issues are discussed both with regard to their in format (layout) and their content.

This is the second part of an article featuring the Polish philatelic magazines published by the Polish Philatelic Association, its affiliates as well as other publishers. The article also discusses various projects aimed at the digitalization of the philatelic magazines and making the back issues available online.

This article reconstructs the vision of World War II in the 1945–1946 issues of the children’s weekly Świerszczyk. The looks for answers to the following questions: How did the authors of the Świerszczyk texts build the narrative of the war that had just ended? In what way did they bring to the attention of their readers the victims of the war and the war heroes, and in what terms did they describe their victimhood and heroism respectively?

This is a profile of Ateneum Wileńskie, an annual published by the Society of the Friends of Science in Wilno in 1923–1939 with the financial support of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education. It featured articles on the history of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and played an important role in the popularization of research in the field of political history, law, culture, social and economic history and historical sources of Lithuania in the 16th–19th century. Ateneum Wileńskie was one of the leading academic periodicals in Poland, and most of the materials that were published by it have retained their value.

This is the first part of a longer article on the post-war Polish philatelic press. It contains an overview of this press segment in the context of the rising interest in philately in Poland and a review of the magazines published by the Central Management Board of the Polish Philatelic Association and the local branches of the PPA.

The article presents a profile of Gazetka Radiowa published in Warsaw in 1937–1938, addressed to the youngest users of the radio, then a rapidly expanding new medium. The profile covers key aspects of the magazine's printing process, sales and marketing as well as an analysis of its content in comparison with other periodicals of this kind. An estimated fifty titles were launched in Poland in the radio guide market segment after the first issue of Przegląd Radiotechniczny went to print in 1923. While providing information about radio programmes and technology, they led the way in the transition to a new age of public communication.

This article presents a profile of the satirical weekly Szopka (A Puppet Show) published in Warsaw between 1922 and 1925 under the auspices of the National Democracy (ND). Committed to a nationalist ideology, Szopka published cartoons and satirical texts lampooning the alleged enemies of Poland and the Poles. Its favoured technique was to caricature and ridicule its targets, both individuals and institutions. Among them were Józef Piłsudski, his policies and his political associates, the Bolsheviks, the Germans and the Jews. To propagate their nationalist worldview the editors made use of a broad range of persuasion techniques.

The ‘incriminated (suppressed) text’ and its removal remains the key object on the conceptual map of censorship studies. In this approach to censor ship the analysis focuses on demonstrable facts of official intervention in the media, the documentation of the process as well as the reconstruction of the effects of individual gagging orders for the author, the publisher and the editor in charge. An alternative, historical approach to censorship takes a much broader view of the subject. It looks at the institutions involved, their competences, procedures and aims (ranging from prevention to repression) as well as the tools at their disposal. The latter approach, systemic and comparative in scope, requires ‘digging up’ considerably more information than establishing the fact of a censor’s intervention.

The article examines the presentation of wars, uprisings, and life in the Polish army in children's magazines in the years immediately preceding World War II. The analysis, primarily focused on Poranek. Tygodnik dla starszych dzieci [ The Morning — A Weekly for Older Children] (1937–1939) looks into the contexts of the publication of that content.

This jubilee article commemorating the centenary of the Battle of Warsaw (1920) is an attempt to examine the presentation of this decisive battle of the Polish-Soviet War. Also known as the 'Miracle at the Vistula', it became one of the most popular foundation myths of the reborn Polish state, shaped and fed to the public opinion by both historiography and personal accounts of its participants. This article focuses on a series of dramatic battlefield reports in the mass circulation daily 'Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny'.

The article analyzes the content of the first (single) issue Phoenix, a magazine of esoteric philosophy published in 1937. Its selection of philosophic and literary works was (co)edited by Wacław Liwski, an esotericist and popularizer of the theosophical thought of Helena Roerich. Liwski is linked by some with the novelist Władysław Reymont.
