Abstract

The issue of transportation is a particular type of mathematical programming that facilitates searching for and determining an optimal distribution network, considering the set of suppliers and recipients. This paper uses a numerical example to present a solution to a transport problem utilizing classical computation methods, i.e., the northwest corner, the least cost in a matrix, and the VAM approximation method. The objective of the paper was to develop tools in the form of algorithms that would then be implemented in three various computing environments (R, GNU Octave, and Matlab) that allow us to optimize transport costs within an assumed supply network. The model involved determining decision variables and indicating limiting conditions. Furthermore, the authors interpreted and visualized the obtained results. The implementation of the proposed solution enables users to determine an optimal transport plan for individually defined criteria.

Abstract

Industry 4.0 will affect the complexity of supply chain networks. It will be necessary to

adapt more and more to the customer and respond within a time interval that is willing

to accept the product waiting. From these considerations, there is a need for a different way

of managing the supply chain. The traditional concept of supply chain as a linear system,

which allows optimizing individual subsystems, thus obtaining an optimized supply chain, is

Abstract

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is a very important part of the industrial world, especially in the manufacturing sector. The development of the business world affects the complexity of the supply chain due to the lack of logistics infrastructure, quality of materials and components, and much more. Supply chain disruption risk mapping needs to be done due to high uncertainty, which is overcome by implementing a decision support system. Based on the background of the problem, supply chain disruption mapping uses the help of the Six Sigma method, which consists of 5 stages: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC). Abstract

Recently, the expand of industrial market has led to have long supply chain network. During the long shipment, the probability of having damaged products is likely to occur. The probability of having damaged products is different between stages and that could lead to higher percentage of damaged products when arrived at retailers. Many companies have rejected the entire shipment because the damaged product percentage was higher than that agreed on. Decision-makers have tried to reduce the percentage of damaged products that happened because the transit, loading unloading the shipment, and natural disasters. Companies started to implement recovery centers in the supply chain network in order to return their system steady statues. Recovery models have been developed in this paper to reduce the damaged percentage at minimum costs to do so. Results show that the possibility of implementing an inspection unit and a recovery centers in the system before sending the entire shipment to the retailer based on examining a sample size that has been selected randomly from the shipment and the minimum cost of committing type I and type II errors. Designing a methodology to minimize the total cost associated with the supply chain system when there is a possibility of damage occurring during shipping is the objective of this research.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to study the direct influence on the competitive advantage

and pattern development of variables affecting the competitive advantage of the Thai oil

palm industry. This research employs a quantitative research method. The population for

the study consists of 150 oil palm industrial operators in Thailand. Questionnaires are used

in the data collection and the data are analyzed by using SEM. The research results reveal

that the Knowledge Management Process and Supply Chain Integration positively influence

the competitive advantage in the quality, delivery, and cost. The competitive advantage

receives a positive direct impact from the Knowledge Management Process and Supply

Chain Integration. The variation of competitive advantage can be explained as 84%. The

obtained results can be used for developing the industry to create economic growth and

sustainable competitive advantage.

Abstract

This paper addresses supply chain transparency improvement in a triadic manufacturersupplier-

supplier relationship. It investigates the problem of improving transparency using

a set of interviews; then, a detailed problematization and a simulation model is formulated

based on the results. The interview results show that there are two key issues to be considered:

information systems issues related directly to transparency and capability issues related

to utilizing transparency. The simulation results support developing capabilities by illustrating

the effects of different options for coordinating material flow. The results of the study

also indicate that while solutions to improve transparency can be relatively straightforward

to implement, developing the capability to benefit from it can be more challenging, even in

a well-established close partnership. In addition, suppliers may be hesitant to collaborate

without active manufacturer involvement.

Abstract

Performance measurement system in supply chain management (SCM) has been receiving increasing

attention by business organizations as a way to evaluate efficiency in supply chain

activities. Assessing the performance of supply chain uncovers the gap between planning

and actual performance as to trace the potential problems thus ascertain necessary areas

for improvement. This research aims to investigate the application of performance measurement

system in SCM as well as exploring its relationship with organization’s performance

among Malaysian manufacturing firms. By utilizing the questionnaire method, respondents

involved were requested to indicate the extent to which they use a number of 24 selected

performance measures that are related to SCM. The results show that the majority of the

observed manufacturing firms utilize specific performance measurement tools in evaluating

the supply chain performance. The current performance measurement techniques, the Balanced

Score Card is adopted by around a quarter of the total responding firms followed

by Supply Chain Operations References Model – SCOR, which attracts total users of only

a fifth of the total respondents. In particular, performance measures under customer service

category recorded the highest number of usage followed by cost-based performance measures

and operations management. The results of this investigation also unveil few major points

that are important to be highlighted. Firstly, the obtained outcomes of this study bring to

light the significant relationships between the utilization of supply chain performance measures

under customer service, operations management and organizational performance. In

addition, this study discovered a significant correlation between the size of the organization

and the extent of use of supply chain performance measures and how these two variables

positively correlated. Lastly, the findings also suggested that the performance measures for

SCM has been playing a crucial role in enhancing the performance of the organizations and

is increasingly operated as the firms grow in size. Based on the brief highlighted points listed

above, it is not an exaggeration to say that this research contributes new information to the

body of knowledge in performance measurement system in SCM and its associations with

organizational performance.

Abstract

Due to globalized business operations, companies in different economic sectors are part of complex supply chain networks. Their value-added processes comprise product and information flows, e.g. with a focus on manufacturing, service or trade. Until the final product is delivered to the end customer, it needs to pass many different processes in cooperating organizations. As a result, there a lot of business-to-business (B2B) interactions with crossenterprise transactions, often including cross-border communications and sometimes even cross-industry trades with technological and often cultural implications. Especially the interfaces of supply chain networks are prone to inefficiencies, misunderstandings and delays due to a lack of standardized B2B transactions, which leads to waste in form of rework, errors and mistakes. In addition, new customers are hard to find for the manufacturing or trading company, since potential customers are so far limited to a regional network. The advantages of extending the customer base still need to be explored by many organizations. This paper discusses the opportunities by streamlining the communication along supply chain networks in a general fashion and then describes the application in a B2B automotive retail business. A concept of a web-based trading platform, which provides a seamless service for all steps of a convenient and efficient used vehicle remarketing business, is developed. It includes all phases, like offering and price finding in a comprehensive online platform, which also covers further activities, such as logistic services, financial transactions, and a mandatory feedback loop. The suggested B2B vehicle-trading platform enables a quick turnover of each transaction, which is analyzed and optimized based on the application of cross-enterprise Value Stream Management.

Abstract

Increased competition has led businesses to compete with each other in streamlining supply chain processes, especially in the manufacturing sector. Supply Chain Management (SCM) determines the success of industrial business processes because it regulates product flow regarding integration, performance, and information. However, several problems have emerged in the supply chain process, such as a lack of coordination in the production queue, difficulties in forecasting trending products, and suboptimal production capacity. To address these issues, the role of information technology is crucial for implementing a Decision Support System (DSS). This study aims to develop a DSS to improve the supply chain processes. The research method used is Extreme Programming (XP) with a qualitative approach through a questionnaire. The research process involves collecting data, defining boundaries and problems, and designing, coding, and testing the system. As a final step, evaluation is carried out by distributing surveys to obtain valid satisfaction results. This research produces a DSS that has applicability in marketing, accounting, and production processes. The application of DSS in the furniture manufacturing industry can help manage the movement of resources, optimize strategic networks, and assist decision-making in the supply chain process.

Abstract

Nowadays, it is necessary to develop a conceptual framework for analysing the relationship between the implementation of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). In this context, a gap in the research has been observed in the new approach to designing the importance of AM in SCM. The main contribution of this paper, therefore, is a new framework to formulate the role in adopting AM in SCM. The research methodology is based on detailed literature studies of AM in relation to the SCM process within a manufacturing company, as well on a case study, namely the COWAN GmbH manufacturing company who specialise in producing homewares for motorhome enthusiasts. As highlighted in the state-of-the-art analysis, no work, currently available, supports all the features presented.

Abstract

Value Stream Mapping has been a key Lean tool since its publication in 1988, offering a strategic view on the reconfiguration of an organization’s processes to reduce overall lead time. It has since been used in many different domains beyond (car) manufacturing. However, the potential offered by its concise representation of both material flow and its controlling information flow seems to have been largely underused. Most literature reports on VSM in the context of waste detection and local improvements. VSM also supports redesigning the material flow (even on a supply chain level) towards (pure) pull systems. However, it fails to adequately give guidance on how to gradually evolve towards this ultimate ideal state. This paper wants to offer a significant contribution to practitioners on how to use VSM to bridge this gap. Another key challenge that remains largely unpublished is how to adapt the planning systems accordingly at each reconfiguration of the material flow. This paper presents extensions to the basic VSM tool to meet these challenges. It includes a more comprehensive 5-level hierarchy that allows to position most lean flow-related techniques. It also extends the basic “door-to-door” VSM with new symbols to accommodate these techniques into the map. Finally, it introduces a new set of 13 questions to support redesigning not only the material flow, but also the information flow. The resulting richer future state maps better support the gradual evolution towards a leaner future shop floor, as illustrated with an example.

Abstract

With continuous and rapid change in both technology and businesses due to climate change and governments regulations, Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) is receiving increasing attentions during last two decades. GSCM refers to the abilities of businesses to enhance operations and sustain environment at the same time and efficiently. In this paper, a comprehensive review of GSCM development and applications is conducted. This review aims to explore the recent developments of GSCM and necessity of adoption GSCM applications in businesses to insure sustainable development. First, a descriptive analysis of 796 paper adopted from Scopus database was conducted to review research on GSCM. Next, a bibliometric analysis of 235 paper was conducted to determine the recent trends and areas of GSCM and related keywords by using VOSviewer software. Then, a content analysis was carried out of 53 review papers by adopting WordStat software to analyze the impact of GSCM on related subjects and trends of GSCM. Finally, a summary analysis of GSCM advantages and challenges was conducted based on fundamental GSCM’s objectives. Results reveal that researches on GSCM are in upward curve with limitations in implementing GSCM applications due to high cost, and lack of sufficient experiences. Results also reveal positive moderate correlation of GSCM with environment, performance, sustainability and management practices indicating the limited implementation of GSCM applications. To further explore these limitations, this study summarized the recent challenges and future potential directions of GSCM in both businesses and environments.

Abstract

The article presents a new optimization tool supporting supply chain management in the multi-criteria aspect. This tool was implemented in the EPLOS system (European Logistics Services Portal system). The EPLOS system is an integrated IT system supporting the process of creating a supply and distribution network in supply chains. This system consists of many modules e.g. optimization module which are responsible for data processing, generating results. The main objective of the research was to develop a system to determine the parameters of the supply chain, which affect its efficiency in the process of managing the goods flow between individual links in the chain. These parameters were taken into account in the mathematical model as decision variables in order to determine them in the optimization process. The assessment of supply chain management effectiveness was carried out on the basis of the global function of the criterion consisting of partial functions of the criteria described in the mathematical model. The starting point for the study was the assumption that the effectiveness of chain management is determined by two important decision-making problems that are important for managers in the supply chain management process, i.e. the problem of assigning vehicles to tasks and the problem of locating logistics facilities in the supply chain. In order to solve the problem, an innovative approach to the genetic algorithm was proposed, which was adapted to the developed mathematical model. The correctness of the genetic algorithm has been confirmed in the process of its verification.

Abstract

The paper refers to planning deliveries of food products (especially those available in certain seasons) to the recipients: supermarket networks. The paper presents two approaches to solving problems of simultaneous selection of suppliers and transportation modes and construction of product flow schedules with these transportation modes. Linear mathematical models have been built for the presented solution approaches. The cost criterion has been taken into consideration in them. The following costs have been taken into account: purchase of products by individual recipients, transport services, storing of products supplied before the planned deadlines and penalties for delays in supply of products. Two solution approaches (used for transportation planning and selection of suppliers and selection of transportation modes) have been compared. The monolithic approach calls for simultaneous solutions for the problems of supplier selection and selection of transportation modes. In the alternative (hierarchical) solution approach, suppliers are selected first, and then transportation companies and their relevant transportation modes are selected. The results of computational experiments are used for comparison of the hierarchical and monolithic solution approaches.

Abstract

Reviewing the current state of knowledge on sustainable production, this paper opens the Special Section entitled “Sustainability in production in the context of Industry 4.0”. The fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), which embodies a vision for the future system of manufacturing (production), focuses on how to use contemporary methods (i.e. computerization, robotization, automation, new business models, etc.) to integrate all manufacturing industry systems to achieve sustainability. The idea was introduced in 2011 by the German government to promote automation in manufacturing. This paper shows the state of the art in the application of modern methods in sustainable manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0. The authors review the past and current state of knowledge in this regard and describe the known limitations, directions for further research, and industrial applications of the most promising ideas and technologies.

Abstract

Facing severely competitive global markets, managers of the modern transnational corporations must effectively integrate its intra-supply chain system to meet customers’ multiproduct demands with good quality items, minimum operating expenses, and in a timely delivery matter. Inspired by assisting current transnational firms to achieve the mission, this study builds a mathematical model to explore a multiproduct fabrication-shipment problem incorporating an accelerated rate and ensured product quality. A single machine production scheme under a common cycle policy and with random defects, rework, and an accelerated fabrication rate is considered. The speedy rate option is associated with extra setup and linear variable costs, which aims to cut short the common cycle time. Mathematical derivation is employed to find the long-run average system expense. The optimization method is used to jointly derive the decision for common length and delivery frequency per cycle for the problem. Numerical illustration is offered to confirm the applicability of the results and expose the individual/combined influences of diverse crucial system features on the problem, thus facilitate the intra-supply chain’s fabrication-shipment decision making.

Abstract

Correct diagnosis and appropriate selection of pharmacotherapy will not upgrade patient’s health if the drug is not available in the pharmacy. Pharmaceutical supply chain breakdown may occur due to epidemiological or political reasons. Then, the finished drug form factories located in Poland will not secure the drug supply. Thus, cooperation of the scientific community with the pharmaceutical and chemical industries is necessary to boost the domestic manufacturing of active pharmaceutical substances and substrates. Due to number of substances needed, the scale of national demand and the investments, the problem needs to be solved at European level. The Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe is an important guidance in this regard. The aim of our paper is to review the current state, indicate solutions and initiate a discussion on the development of the synthesis of active pharmaceutical substances in Poland. We focused on small-molecular compounds, the national perspective and the relationship between the synthesis of active substances and protection of the natural environment. Point actions for investments in infrastructure as well as research and development are not enough. Thus, we propose to create a system supporting synthesis of active pharmaceutical substances in Poland.

Abstract

In this article, we review the research state of the bullwhip effect in supply chains with

stochastic lead times. We analyze problems arising in a supply chain when lead times are

not deterministic. Using real data from a supply chain, we confirm that lead times are

stochastic and can be modeled by a sequence of independent identically distributed random

variables. This underlines the need to further study supply chains with stochastic lead times

and model the behavior of such chains.
