Abstract

The presented analysis concerns deflections of the reinforced concrete slab in the fire-fighting water storage tank with volume of 950 m3. It was built on human-altered soil which led to deflection of the tank. When water was pumped out from the tank, rectification was performed. The tank and its slab foundation were non-uniformly elevated by means of hydraulic jacks. These jacks were installed under the slab, on foundation made of concrete block stacks, which were pressed into the ground. The computational analysis was conducted for displacements and deflections of the slab supported on the jacks. The number of jacks under the slab and stiffness of jack supports on the stacks were the variable parameters of the model. Stiffness of the jack supports was found to have non-significant impact on deflections of the foundation slab of the rectified tank. On the other hand, the number of jacks under the tank affected both deflections of the slab and displacements of the whole tank. The greatest deflection of the tank slab supported on three jacks was 15.233 mm, and the smallest one was 10.435 mm at 32 jacks.

Abstract

The paper presents the author’s approach to evaluating the dynamic resistance of existing building structures exposed to the action of paraseismic events. The idea of the approach was demonstrated in the example of an existing conveyor bridge, which is an important component of an industrial plant located in an area threatened by the occurrence of mining tremors. A scenario was analysed in which the object’s structure was not adapted to absorb additional dynamic effects. Therefore, it was necessary to determine the load-bearing capacity reserve within which the dynamic effects induced by a mining tremor could be allowed. As part of the analysis, criteria for selecting the authoritative section of the analysed object for further dynamic calculations were established and described in detail. As a result of the implemented evaluation procedure, the limiting values of the ground acceleration components were obtained, which are understood as the resistance of the analysed object in the context of carrying additional dynamic actions induced by a tremor. The determined resistance is included in the ultimate limit state STR framework, which sets the level of strength of particular structures’ components as a criterion. The limit values of the ground acceleration components were calibrated, taking into account other accompanying variable actions according to the Eurocodes guidelines. The study also justified using this approach and provides essential information about dynamic excitation’s most sensitive structural components. Such information can direct the process of retrofit or necessary strengthening of the structure when the evaluated resistance will exceed the intensity of existing or predicted seismic events in the area.

Abstract

There is estrimated more than 750 (public and privat) hospitals active In Poland. In spite that there is legal regulation concerning hospital projects, realization and equipment – permanent financial problems concerning a public health service, results in standards of hospitals, much worse then represented in hospitals in highly developed countries. A long – term practice of authors, concerning both, design and implementation of hospitals, let them to formulate a set of remarks about disfunction, influalcing growth of a danger, risks and mistakes in medical practice, also unexpected accidents.

Abstract

The paper presents an example illustrating the problems of assessing the causes of damage that occurred to building structures located in mining and post-mining area. It is frequently necessary to determine whether probable damages came from other, non-mining causes or were caused by underground mining. This issue is particularly significant when it comes to monumental, historical objects because the cost of repairs is typically very high. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate, using the magnificent church as an example, that damage to building objects situated in mining areas does not necessarily result from mining activities. As a result, every such situation should be thoroughly evaluated to determine whether such a relationship exists. For the assessment of such a conclusion, multidirectional studies in the framework of this work were carried out: hydrogeological, mining and technical factors that cause the damage to the church building in question were analysed.
