Abstract

The essay is meant to be a reflection, a conclusion of sorts regarding the topic proposed by the organizers of the "Towards beauty." It is meant to be about the problems of introducing aesthetics to public spaces. From the point of view of many disciplines. This academic event took place in the April of 2014 at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk. The Author assumed the perspective of an architect when contemplating the problems being discussed. This approach emphasizes the role that is played by the concept of the urban landscape. The work is composed of an introduction, which illustrates the reasons for adopting this perspective. This part is followed by a classification of the stances and academic research that has been presented in the delivered lectures and essays. This generalization has the form of a typology composed of five points, which describe the general issues that were discussed. The overarching thesis of this is essay is the statement that the choice of problems that have been discussed at the conference are the result of a contemporary model of thinking about the management of space, which results from a much too liberal approach that has been adopted after the socioeconomic changes that occurred in 1989. This begs the question whether the issues that are important in the context of the aesthetics of cities are effects the causes of which could lie in society's approach to its reality. Due to the aim of this essay being a commentary on the academic event that was the Gdańsk conference and a sort of reflection on the issues that were being discussed there, the Author decided not to provide it with a conclusion at the end. The Author's comments contained in this work are only a voice in the discussion and a complementation of the opinions that have been presented during the conference. The article is supposed to elicit a familiarity with the presented issues so that the reader can form their opinions, and, what is perhaps even more important, provide the foundation for future academic discussion on the topic of the beauty of the cityscape.

Abstract

This paper presents a synthesis of research in the field of social activity in development of urban public spaces. Interest in social participation in which many groups sees a remedy to the problems of the city - including spatial chaos - has many causes. One of them is the lack of trust in the social side to the profession of architecture. The article indicates the possible cause of this state for which it was flawed legislation and the planning system, which in practice is not conducive to the formation of order, harmony and beauty, but facilitate the implementation of the narrow groups of interests, bringing the rank of designer as creator of the role of the investor's decision executor.

Abstract

Modifications of garrisons cityscape in interwar period were conducted in various locations and various forms: from urban scale (urban compositions designed and supplemented), through architectural (new buildings) to details (monuments and objects of small architecture). The activities were deliberately contrasted with the existing structure and harmoniously composed in relation to new investments.

Abstract

This paper presents the ‘precepts of perception’ of buildings observed in the space of the landscape that were described in one of the first Polish-language handbooks on architecture and construction published in Krakow in 1812 by Sebastian Alojzy Sierakowski (1743–1824)—a clergyman, architect and scientist, as well as a statesman holding important public positions during the turn of the nineteenth century in what was becoming historical Poland. Sierakowski’s principles of building perception—described in suggestive and colourful language—created a kind of original set of rules referring to optics, perspective and composition, that deserve careful analysis and re-reading in the present times of ongoing discourse on the condition of the Polish landscape and city planning system.

Abstract

The article pres ents digital analysis techniques for the cityscape and structure of the city to examine multifaceted impact of tall buildings. Methods presented enable analysing visual impact (VIS), planning of protection for strategic vistas (VPS) and examining of impact on public space (several methods, including Negative-3D). The research was carried out under the 2TaLL Project: Application of 3D Virtual City Models in Urban Analyses of Tall Buildings, implemented in 2013-2016.

Abstract

This paper discusses the protection and development of the cityscape with the use of digital techniques to determine the location of tall buildings. It presents the methodology applied while developing the 2020–2021 Composition Study of Szczecin. The study was commissioned by the City, and its results were included in the Study of Conditions and Directions for Spatial Development of Szczecin adopted in 2022. The aim was to define a framework for the development of high-rise buildings, while at the same time protect historical vistas preserved in the public consciousness. The paper discusses various methods of digital cityscape analysis based on the use of 3D city models, e.g.,Visual Protection Surface (VPS) and Visual Impact Size (VIS), which allow to indicate the maximum height of new buildings that would enable to protect strategic views and to analyse the impact of new buildings on the city space. The process resulted in the formulation of precise guidelines and the drafting of a long-term and sustainable spatial policy for the cityscape of Szczecin. The research has a universal formula and may also be applied to other cities.
