Abstract

Commenting on Łukasz Bertram’s book on Polish communists, Kula appreciates Bertram’s efforts in presenting and understanding the communists and their movement. Bertram does not limit himself to presenting solely the facts; he does not judge communism, since a great deal has already been said on that topic. He analyses, or above all takes a good look at, how the communists thought and the conditioning they were subjected to. He creates a picture significantly more complex than that currently functioning in Poland, and skilfully combines the approaches of historians and sociologists. This is a connection worth supporting, and the book in question constitutes a good example of how much it can give.

Abstract

Religion has two functions: a social one (it consolidates a group of followers) and a personal one (psychological). In modern times, the social function of religion has been taken over by ideologies. Socialism is one of such ideologies. The creators of Marxism called their version of socialism scientific socialism, but their vision of the course of history (‘from capitalism to communism’) has become the foundation of a new religion and a new church. The author calls this church ‘Marxo-Leninism’. The text shows similarities between the Catholic Church and the Marxo-Leninism (or the Stalinist church), as well as the analogies between the Jesuit order and the ‘Len-Party’ (i.e. the Leninisttype party).

Abstract

From its inception in 1958, the tourist and educational magazine “Poznaj Swój Kraj” [Discover Your Country] was never free from propaganda. Materials of this kind were usually included to mark congresses of the ruling Polish United Workers’ Party or national and state holidays. The official propaganda of success reached its climax in the 1970s. After 1981 eulogies of the socialism system receded and the focus of attention turned to tensions between industrial development and conservation.

Abstract

This article is an comprehensive media-analysis of 'Życie i Kultura' [Life and Culture], a sup-plement published in 1951–1956 with the weekend edition of Głos Szczeciński, the newspaper of the Polish United Workers' Party in Szczecin, aimed at delineating its idea of regionalism, i.e. the character of regional identity that the paper was trying to construct for a population made up entirely of migrants. The article contains a list of journalists connected with Szczecin and the region; an account of serial articles featuring regional themes; an analysis of various aspects of regionalism in reportage; and a review of materials of regional interest that found their way into print.

Abstract

This article tries to bring more clarity to the issue of media control by the Polish communist party, and in particu-lar identify the institutions, political bodies and politicians who exercised various degrees of control over the press, radio and television in the first half of the 1970. An analysis of various kinds of records and data indi-cates that the day-to-day business of setting the party line for the media was in the hands of propaganda de-partments at the level of the Central Committee. In 1972 they were merged into a single Department of Propa-‑ganda, Press and Publications, headed by Jerzy Łukaszewicz, member of the CC Secretariat, and overseen by Jan Szydlak, member of the Poliburo.
