Abstract

This paper discusses heritagisation, a key concept in critical heritage studies. The author differ-entiates the sources and meanings of this term within various heritage discourses. First and foremost, the ambition of the paper is to propose an appropriate translation of heritagisation into Polish, one that embraces all the negative aspects of this process.
The concept of heritagisation was introduced in the 90s and then later adapted by scholars representing critical heritage studies. Originally, the term was used to signal the dangers linked to the administrative processes of heritage‑making: gentrification, commercialisation, monetisa-tion and flattening the meanings of monuments and architecture from the past. The term was critically examined at the beginning of the 21st century, when scholars used it to describe the accumulation of heritage that is insufficiently protected. Nevertheless, this concept, migrating from discipline to discipline, also gained a positive meaning connected to the adaptation of heritage. In this paper the author discusses the differences between negative and positive her-itagisation. The author identifies the differences between discourses, and explains how the concept is used within various fields of study. Last but not least, the author proposes a non‑literal translation of heritagisation into Polish, which should embrace all the meanings of the concept framed by critical heritage studies theory. Finally, the author applies the concept to a case study: the history of Pavilion Powiśle/Syreni Śpiew.

Abstract

From 20th to 28th August 2022, the 26th ICOM General Conference took place in Prague. Its main theme was “The Power of Museums”. The conference was the product of a long discussion about defining the contemporary role of museums and their obligations to the past, present, and future. In the article titled: The Humans and their History in Museums. A few Reflections about the 26th ICOM General Conference in Prague the author discusses the course of proceedings and asks questions about the character and nature of the museum’s work in the field of history as an academic discipline. Some of the most important questions discussed in the paper include those on: museums’ aspirations in the field of sensual depiction of history; the relationship between the tangible and intangible heritage within museums’ method of work; the role of heritage interpretation as the basic tool of contact with the audience; and the urgent issue of neutrality and institutions’ engagement in the face of contemporary challenges. The source materials used in order to find answers to these questions are the legal acts about museums; the resolutions of the 1st Congress of Polish Museum Professionals (April 2015 in Łódź); and the definitions that constitute museums, both through legal acts on the state level and those passed by the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

Abstract

Ustawy o planowaniu przestrzennym z lat 1994 i 2003 zniosły obowiązek sporządzania planów miejscowych, więc 3/4 terytorium Polski zabudowywane jest bez planu. Zastępują go ułomne i korupcjogenne „Decyzje o warunkach zabudowy”. W roku 2014 zlikwidowane zostały uprawnienia urbanistyczne i samorząd zawodowy Izba Urbanistów.

Abstract

Modifications of garrisons cityscape in interwar period were conducted in various locations and various forms: from urban scale (urban compositions designed and supplemented), through architectural (new buildings) to details (monuments and objects of small architecture). The activities were deliberately contrasted with the existing structure and harmoniously composed in relation to new investments.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to trace the links between Professor Wiktor Zin’s artistic work and activity and his hometown – Hrubieszów. The Professor’s message on the importance of documenting and protecting this heritage has not lost its relevance, especially today, when historical wooden buildings are being destroyed. The paper concludes that the place of birth was an important motif in Wiktor Zin’s artistic work and activity. In addition to his achievements in terms of publications and designs, the popularization of this key issue to a wider audience, which continues to this day, was of importance for the protection of the cultural heritage of Hrubieszów.

Abstract

This article concerns church monuments, which are part of the cultural heritage of Dukla. This is a town with medieval origins, located within the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, in the Krosno district. In the past it was an important centre of commerce on the Hungarian Route. Merchant traditions in Dukla are mainly associated with trade and storage of wine, which was kept in the cellars under the main market square in Dukla. Because of the rank, which the town used to have in the past, it can boast numerous monuments including objects associated with the administrative, commercial and economic functions of the town, as well as — or perhaps primarily — sacred objects. Among the latter, one has to mention firstly the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, the church and monastery complex of the Bernardine Order, and the synagogue of the Jewish community, that once used to live in Dukla. Those objects, their cultural value and issues related to their protection constitute the subject of this study.

Abstract

Cities in recent times suffer from deterioration, suburbanization and depopulation, although as the historically evolved townscapes, they bring economic, social and cultural assets. The reurbanization activates and renews the areas, which lost their functional and formal attractiveness and actuality. The public investments, which protect and capitalize the historical heritage of the cities are the main tool to implement this vector of development. This paper, on the example of analysis of selected group of public investments, which took place in a historic townscape of Szczecin, focuses on significance of the cultural and historical values and presents their catalytic effect on further city development.

Abstract

Stairways are one of the built elements of landscape architecture that shape the character of a space. Our research takes a closer look at the stairways of historical value in the environment of Buda Castle World Heritage Site. Firstly, through the production of sketches, the dominant spatial effects, views, focal points and motifs perceived during the use of the chosen stairways, were analysed. Secondly, an assessment matrix was formulated from criteria such as scale, materials, size, quality of adjacent green spaces, etc. Our aim is to underline and give evidence of the potential of stairways in influencing the open spaces and the views in historical urban environments.

Abstract

The authenticity of the historical garden, as defined by the Florence Charter, is conducive to its broad interpretation. In the era of the present crisis of conservation values, the identification of criteria helpful in an objective assessment of the authenticity of both historical and historising forms of greenery is required.

On the example of the restoration’s solutions in the gardens at Wilanów and the condition of selected elements of the urban greenery in Warsaw, it is possible to verify the model of valorization of factors determining the vegetation’s authenticity proposed by the author of the article. This model also allows to emphasize the features determining the role of royal gardens in Wilanów in maintaining the historical horticultural values of modern Warsaw.

W artykule poruszam problem dziedzictwa bizantyjskiego na Rusi w kontekście opinii XIX- i XX-wiecznych filozofów rosyjskich, głównie (neo)słowianofi-lów i (neo)okcydentalistów, m.in. Aleksego Chomiakowa, Iwana Kiriejewskiego, Pawła Florenskiego, Gieorgija Fłorowskiego, Konstantina Leontjewa, Gustawa Szpeta i Borysa Jakowienki.

Abstract

The paper presents the genealogy of the concept of heritage in Polish. Adopting the Koselleck approach, it aims to bring the two paths of conceptual history methodology together: a sema-siological analysis of the term's various meanings and the onomasiological study of different words designating the same concept within one semantic field. The text argues that heritage belongs to those concepts that existed since the "saddle‑time"; however, until the second half of the 20th century, without one word denoting it.

Abstract

Utilizing cultural heritage in the process of urban regeneration of cities is becoming key principle that can guarantee creating sustainable spaces. Its role is accentuated even more nowadays with globalization processes exposing most parts of the world to similar influences. This research discusses the concept of urban regeneration as a comprehensive development approach and highlights the potential role of tangible, intangible and natural components of cultural heritage as leading actors in this approach. By studying the case of Bab Touma square, a historical urban square in Damascus, the research aims to set forth the importance of communicating those cultural elements as a mean to strengthening spatial identity and spatial attachment towards a space. The research adopts an analytical method and tracks the urban development phases of the square in order to define how they contributed to the change of the square’s image and identity, considering such urban spaces in the city with so many symbolic, cultural and historical values as generative points that could play a vital role in activating the process of urban regeneration of the city.

Abstract

Stanowił on część długotrwałych, wielostanowiskowych badań terenowych w Oaxace przeprowadzonych w latach 2011–2017, uzupełnionych interpretacją źródeł zastanych. Analizuję tortilla tour w szerszym kontekście jedzenio-obrazów (foodscapes), czyli przepływu pożywienia, ludzi i wyobrażeń na temat praktyk jedzeniowych (foodways) w transnarodowym społeczeństwie konsumpcyjnym. Przyglądam się także strategiom wytwarzania dziedzictwa kulinarnego na potrzeby turystyki kulturowej, która w założeniu ma prowadzić do stymulowania rozwoju społecznego i ekonomicznego wzrostu regionu.

Abstract

The aim of the article is to reflect on the phenomenon of great art exhibitions, gathering exhibits, mainly paintings, exceptional from the perspective of national cultural heritage, which collectively represent a defined generational message. The reflection included the best‑known exhibitions of recent decades, being an expression of the historical culture of a time of great changes in the life of Polish society at the turn of the 21st century. These are two exhibitions at the National Museum in Kraków, the first exhibition ever by Marek Rostworowski, “Polish self‑portrait” (1979); the second is an exhibition of Marek Szczerski’s work entitled #dziedzictwo/heritage (2017); a jubilee exhibition organised by the National Museum in Warsaw in collaboration with the Louvre‑Lens Museum, the National Museum in Poznan and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute on the centennial of regaining independence, entitled “Poland. The power of the image” (2019‑2021). This reflection also includes the monumental exhibition organised collectively by the Royal Castle in Warsaw and the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, with the participation of the curator Anda Rottenberg, entitled “Side by side. Germany‑Poland 1000 years of history in art.” (2012).

Abstract

Daylight character in a space can be defined as the manner in which daylight permeates and is dispersed in that space. The architectural elements related to daylighting under investigation in this study were rooted in Iranian-Isfahani heritage, considered traditional Iranian architecture (from the 16th to early 20th century). The establishment of a classification system for daylighting systems holds significant utility. This study aims to delineate the architectural components present in Isfahani-style structures that facilitate the ingress of daylight, thereby enhancing the indoors.
The methodology employed in this research relies on subjective observation and photographic documentation. Based on the findings of this study, architectural daylighting elements can be organized into four distinct categories: Controllers, Scatterers, Filterers, and Modifiers. This classification system delineated these categories based on the observed order in their complexity (in terms of both quantity and quality of daylight treatment), function (pertaining to lighting, view-out, or shading), material characteristics (including transparency, roughness, and brightness), and their impact on daylighting (such as distribution, colour rendition, and intensity). Daylight Controllers encompassed elements like the hurno (skylight), the ravaq, the sabat, and the tabesh-band/sarsayeh/kharakpoush (shading devices), while daylight Scatterers encompassed the shabak, the rozan, the pachang (windows and doors), and the muqarnas (an ornamental feature of skylight). Daylight Filterers, representing more advanced elements when compared to the previous two categories, included the goljam (windows) and the jam-khaneh (skylights). The most intricate daylight manipulation elements were the daylight Modifiers, exemplified by the orosi (windows) and the roshandan (skylight)

Abstract

Many contemporary technical elements (such as railings, light switches, power sockets, security cameras, etc.) have a very different aesthetic from the historical interiors to which they are added. Their placement in historical architectural interiors raises the question of their visibility and their power to disrupt the visual unity of an indoor space. Using logical argumentation and knowledge from the psychology of perception, a phenomenon from the discipline of architecture — the phenomenon of the perception of these elements — was analysed. Logical analysis showed that these additions do not disturb the harmony of the interior and that it does not lose its historical character. The conclusion is that their presence in the field of vision is not a radical interference with the monument.

Abstract

This article presents the historic town of Røros, which has been inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980. Røros is located on the river Glomma, in central and eastern Norway, in the Sør-Trøndelag region. Settlement in this area developed around the mid-17th century when rich copper deposits were discovered. Not only the mining tradition of the town from that period, but also timber houses, a water transport system and relics of a former foundry as well as machines used for copper mining have survived until the present. The indicated elements of the cultural heritage of the town confirm its unique character on the European scale, while the cooperation between the local community and authorities in order to protect and revalorise the complex is exemplary. According to the Authors, such cooperation is indispensable for the process of protection and revalorisation of cultural heritage to run smoothly, of which Røros is proof.

Abstract

Starting from the consideration that sustainability of landscape heritage is logically coupled with today’s sustainable development needs, the research explores the general ideas, methods and strategies of ancient Chinese urban water management. Based on the traditional Chinese water management experience from the ancient city of Ganzhou, the paper — analyses the current water landscape heritage in Jiangxi Province, China.
Based on the historic experience and knowledge introduced and analyzed in the case study of Ganzhou, it is possible to define rainwater management principles and sustainable development strategies for modern urban landscape that could be the basis of a new research perspective in facing today’s climate anomalies.

Abstract

In the early 1990s, the first questions began to arise about the legitimacy of large-scale projects, made on a grand scale for sports events, lasting only a short period. Doubts were not only raised about the organizers’ budgets and the debts often left behind, but also about the impact of these projects on the environment and society. During this time, the word ‘legacy‘ also appeared — in academic discourse, defining the remnants of these competitions. The two most recent editions of the Summer Olympics in Europe were analysed, which did not differ in scale, but due to being played over a longer interval, differed in the awareness of the organizers and the knowledge of how to plan projects more sustainably. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that the design of Olympic venues in the context of the idea of an Olympic legacy should take into account elements of a strategy for the duration of these venues over time. It is only over a longer period of time that one can assess whether these original assumptions were correct, and the region gained valuable spaces for recreation, or whether they led to the creation of costly unfunctional sports facilities.

Abstract

The study addresses the challenges facing the law of the sea. Although UNCLOS is rightly described as a constitution of the law of the sea, it does not and cannot give answers to all problems and doubts that arise in practice and that are related to global warming, protection of biodiversity, legal status of genetic resources, controversy concerning shipping, delimitation of areas or the protection of underwater cultural heritage. Hence the question arises, what the ways and means of further development of the law of the sea are. Undoubtedly, one of the possibilities is to develop implementation agreements, of which the third devoted to the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity outside national jurisdiction is the subject of an international conference convened by the General Assembly, whose resolutions in the area of the law of the sea play an important role. Undoubtedly, also the importance of the organization of the United Nations system, such as the IMO, FAO, UNESCO, UNEP is significant. There is also the possibility of accepting agreements addressing the issues left by UNCLOS without solution or definition. Not without significance is the soft law and the practice of states as well as the position of the organs appointed by UNCLOS.
