Abstract

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the self- healing properties of a commercially-available geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) using flexible-wall permeameter. The GCLs are produced by the same factory, but the contents of bentonite are different. Also the hydraulic conductivities (HC) of GCLs with no defect are different. In this study, specimens were completely saturated under the backpressure of 20 kPa before the test. Permeability tests were performed on GCL specimens with penetrating flaw and also on specimens permeated with distilled water and CaCl2 solutions. The test results were presented and discussed. Experimental results showed that the GCL with penetrating flaw did not exhibit complete self-healing in the case of flaw. After 120 days, the hydraulic conductivity increased by approximately an order of magnitude. In addition, CaCl2 solutions had a significant influence on the hydraulic conductivity. The research findings might be of interest to researchers and engineers who design liners for landfills and other liquid containment facilities

Abstract

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of corneal healing in case of application of stem cells in various forms, in relation to the antibiotic-assisted procedures. Rabbits were divided into 4 groups in the first stage of the experiment. Group 0 (negative control group) was not subjected to any actions, which would cause damage to the cornea. The remaining three groups had their cornea damaged. Group 1 (positive control group) – no drugs were administered during the experiment. Rabbits in group 2 were administered with ointment containing stem cells to the lesion, while group 3 – with ofloxacinum. The stem cells were administered during the first five days, twice a day, onto the corneal surface. The further course of the experiment consisted of observing the rate of healing of the injured cornea and assessment of its transparency, size of lesion, hyperaemia, eyelid spasm and outflow from the conjunctival sac after 5, 10 and 20 days.

In the second stage the animals were euthanised after clinical examination on the twentieth day of the experiment, in order to analyse the corneal reparative processes on the same day. The studies revealed that the application of antlerogenic stem cells had a positive effect on the healing process of corneal defects. The application thereof not only shortened the healing time, but also weakened or arrested the development of side effects. The results have demonstrated that the epithelial proliferation in each group was different. The longest was maintained in the group with stem cells, the shortest – in the group with chemotherapeutics. The use of antlerogenic stem cells had a positive effect on the healing process of corneal lesions. The use of stem cells helped to maintain high transparency of the cornea.

Abstract

Antiseptic agents used in the postoperative period affect the functions of many tissues in the body, including the testicles. In this study, the effect of dressings administered with different antiseptic agents on testicular functions in rats that underwent abdominal incisions was investigated. A total of 48 Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study. Each of the rats in the study group underwent a 4 cm-long skin and muscle operation. The incision was then stitched immediately. Antiseptics, hemp seed oil, hemp leaf oil, and cannabidiol oil were then administered to the rats for 10 days to provide antisepsis. The rats were sacrificed 24 hours after the last administration, and testicular tissues were removed. Testicular tissues were used for histopathological examination and biochemical analysis, while epididymal tissue was used for sperm analysis. According to the results, the MDA level in the antiseptic-administered group was higher than in the other experimental groups (p<0.05). Levels of SOD, CAT activities, and GSH content were found to be lower in the antiseptic group than in the hemp seed oil, hemp leaf oil, and cannabidiol oil groups (p<0.05). In testicular histology, the SEED group had the highest Johnsen score, and the antiseptic group had the lowest score (p<0.05). While JAK, P-JAK2, STAT3, PSTAT3, and NF-κB were generally higher in the antiseptic group compared to the other groups, they were lower in the SEED group. Additionally, sperm total motility rate and epididymal sperm density were highest in the SEED group (p<0.05). As a result, it was determined that cannabidiol seed oil had a good effect on testicular histology and sperm quality in male rats during the wound healing process.

Abstract

The objective of this investigation was to test the effectiveness of the Acoustic Emission (AE) measurements in determining the critical stresses during four-point bending of mortar beams. Within the measuring procedure the parameter σcr/σ300 was calculated and analysed. Additionally, the influence of cement replacement by high calcium fly ash (HCFA) on the process of crack healing was discussed. Mortar beams with different content of HCFA and reinforced by steel microfibres were prepared for tests. After curing in standard conditions the beams were subjected to four-point bending test in order to introduce the pre-cracking. Thereafter the beams were cured in the lime water and loaded after 56 and 112 days in the same way as for the first time. Additionally the microstructure of mortars was studied in a stereo optical microscope as well in an electron scanning microscope including the Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The results of microstructural characterization of mortar containing HCFA from lignite combustion are presented. The applied load level slightly exceeded the critical stress, producing intense crack growth processes however did not significant affected the load capacity of the beams. During the consecutive loading the decreasing tendency of σcr/σ300 ratio was noted. The obtained results confirm that the latter parameter can be applied as a measure of the composite degradation level for the elements carrying the repeated loads of amplitude close to the critical stress of the structure and also that the cement replacement with HCFA influences the process of crack healing.

Abstract

Thermal waters have been recognized as a source of health and energy since ancient times, and today there is still interest in balneotherapy as a method of treating various diseases, rehabilitation and prevention. In Poland, as many as 12 spa towns use healing thermal waters in their activities. They include: Busko-Zdrój, Ciechocinek, Jelenia Góra-Cieplice, Gołdap, Inowrocław, Iwonicz-Zdrój, Konstancin-Jeziorna, Lądek-Zdrój, Rabka-Zdrój, Uniejów, Ustka and Ustroń. Healing thermal waters are not only used there for medical treatments, because they also supply the brine graduation towers, are the base for the production of cosmetics and are also used in drinking treatments. Uniejów spa is a part of the cascade system, so the healing waters of higher temperature are also used for heating apartments. Depending on the mineral composition of the waters, they can be used in the treatment of, among others: diseases of the musculoskeletal system, rheumatology, osteoporosis, skin diseases, diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract, cardiological diseases, diseases of the digestive system, hypertension, obesity, diabetes. All treatments are non-invasive, because the vast majority of them are carried out in the form of bathing, irrigation, inhalation or drinking treatments. The paper also shows the most promising towns in terms of the development of balneotherapy, including Stargard, Pyrzyce, Toruń, Konin and Grudziądz. Balneotherapy in Poland is currently at a difficult time, which is related to the inability to function of many facilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a possibility that when the pandemic and its effects are eliminated, balneotherapy and spa treatment will experience a renaissance.

Abstract

This study discusses the synthesis, characterization and development of self-healing nanocomposite of amino-terminated PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane), Epoxy (EPON828¸ Diethylenetriamine (DETA)), and Graphene Oxide (GO).GOwas prepared using a modified Hummer’s method andwas incorporated into the PDMS-Epoxy composite in various ratios (0.1 wt.%, 0.3 wt.%, and 0.5 wt.%) using toluene as the dispersing medium. Fourier TransformInfrared Spectroscopy was used for confirming the presence of the designed/prepared structures, and thermo-mechanical analysis was performed to test the change in glass transition temperature and initiation temperature of self-healing process. The composite resins were coated on mild steel substrates by curing freshly prepared resins over the substrates at elevated temperatures. The corrosion behavior of mild steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution before and after the coatings was studied using Tafel Electrochemical Polarization test. The self-healing properties of the materials were also studied by applying cuts on the material and letting them heal under elevated temperatures, and the results showed that the prepared coating demonstrated an effective corrosion resistance for mild steel for various marine applications.

Abstract

The increasing concern for the safety and sustainability of structures is calling for the development of smart self-healing materials and preventive repair methods. This research is carried out to investigate the extent of self-healing in normal-strength concrete by using Sporosarcina aquimarina – NCCP-2716 immobilized in expanded perlite (EP) as the carrier. The efficacy of crack-healing was also tested using two alternative self-healing techniques, i.e. expanded perlite (EP) concrete and direct introduction of bacteria in concrete. A bacterial solution was embedded in EP and calcium lactate pentahydrate was added as the nutrient. Experiments revealed that specimens containing EP-immobilized bacteria had the most effective crack-healing. After 28 days of healing, the values of completely healed crack widths were up to 0.78 mm, which is higher than the 0.5 mm value for specimens with the direct addition of bacteria. The specimen showed a significant self-healing phenomenon caused by substantial calcite precipitation by bacteria. The induced cracks were observed to be repaired autonomously by the calcite produced by the bacteria without any adverse effect on strength. The results of this research could provide a scientific foundation for the use of expanded perlite as a novel microbe carrier and Sporosarcina aquimarina as a potential microbe in bacteria-based self-healing concrete.

Abstract

The effect of aging time at 850°C for 300 s, 600 s, 1800 s, and 84600 s on the microstructural evolution and corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) was studied after cold rolling up to 60% of reduction. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy were used for microstructural characterization. The corrosion behavior was studied by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) and electrochemical impedance technique (EIS) in 3.5% NaCl solution and the susceptibility to sensitization was investigated through the double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) test in 0.5 M H2SO4 + 0.1 M NaCl + 0.002 M KSCN solution. After cold working, increasing aging time led to an increase in sigma phase precipitation and a decrease in pitting corrosion resistance. However, the ultrafine microstructure had a beneficial influence on the self-healing effect in Cr and Mo depleted areas with the increasing of aging time, resulting in higher passivation ability. The DSS 2205 type was not susceptible to intergranular corrosion for the aged conditions applied.

Abstract

Applications of cold atmospheric plasma/nitric oxide (CAP/NO) gas have recently garnered popularity when treating impaired wound healing in patients with diabetes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of NO gas application for 60 and 120 s on wound healing in diabetic rats. A dorsal excision 3 cm in diameter was performed in 15 diabetic rats; these rats were categorized into the following 3 groups: DC (untreated diabetic control); DNO/60 (exposure to 200 ppm NO gas for 60 s/day); and DNO/120 (exposure to 200 ppm NO gas for 120 s/day). Wound contraction on days 0, 3, 7, 11, and 14 and wound contraction rate between days 0 and 14 were evaluated. On day 14, tissue samples were collected for histopathologic assessment of inflammation, epithelial regeneration, angiogenesis congestion, and collagen fiber organization. Normality of distribution was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and intergroup comparisons were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test (NPar Test) and the Kruskal-Wallis test (non-parametric ANOVA). Wound contraction during treatment days 7-14 was significantly greater in the NO-treatment groups than in the DC group (p<0.05). The NO60 s and NO120 s groups showed a significantly higher wound contraction rate than the DC group (p=0.033, p=0.049, respectively). Significant differences were noted between the control and NO groups in terms of inflammation (p<0.05) and between the control group and DNO/60 and DNO/120 groups in terms of collagen organization (p<0.05, p<0.01, respectively). Evaluation of epithelialization revealed significant intergroup differences between the control and NO treatment groups (p<0.01). In this study, the application of NO once a day for 60 seconds and 120 seconds in diabetic wounds contributed equally to wound healing.

Abstract

The knowledge of heat transfer processes inside a compressor cylinder is very important from the technical point of view. An adiabatic model of compression can be assumed in theoretical investigations. In practice, the compressor cylinder is always coo_led to decrease the compression work and to reduce the final temperature of a medium being compressed. This paper presents applications of the NANMAC eroding thermocouples to record temperature time histories of surfaces taking a part in the heat exchange during the compression cycle. The thermocouple construction and junction technology ensure a very small thermal inertia. The response time is of the order of I O μs. The eroding thermocouple was used to measure an instantaneous surface temperature of a plate closing the cylinder and the piston head temperature. Because of very low value of the thermoelectric signal, an amplifier of a very high gain and reasonable bandwidth was required. This induced noise of significant amplitude. The recorded experimental data were numerically processed in order to exclude the noise of measurement circuits, and then the data were used to calculate local heat flux rates. To ensure repeatability of the measurements, the experiments were canied out in a specially prepared set-up allowing single compression cycles to be performed.

Abstract

Different approaches to enhance healing of hard or soft tissues include the use of cytokines and growth factors to modify cellular behaviour. Numerous growth factors are found in autologous blood concentrates – platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) may improve tissue healing via amelogenins. Bilayered collagen matrix (CM) is used for soft tissue augmentation.

The aim of the present study was to assess potential benefits of PRP, PRF and EMD in combination with bilayered collagen matrix or CM alone in treatment of oral mucosal defects in rabbits.

Twenty-seven New Zealand white rabbits were included in this randomized controlled trial. Artificial oral mucosal defects were treated with one of these five approaches: PRP+CM, PRF+CM, EMD+CM, CM alone, or left untreated as a negative control - CO. The animals were euthanized 1 day, 7 days, or 28 days after surgery and necropsies were harvested. Histological and molecular biological analyses were performed.

All defects were healed by day 28. No differences between PRP+CM, PRF+CM, CM alone and CO groups were recorded at any time point. Slower angiogenesis and a higher presence of inflammatory infiltrate were observed in the EMD+CM group 28 days after surgery. Molecular biological analyses did not reveal any statistically significant changes.

In conclusion, no improvement in mucosal healing of wounds covered with a collagen membrane and PRP, PRF, or EMD was observed, compared with CM alone or untreated controls.

Abstract

Self-healing grids are one of the most developing concepts applied in electrical engineering. Each restoration strategy requires advanced algorithms responsible for the creation of local power systems. Multi-agent automation solutions dedicated for smart grids are mostly based on Prim’s algorithm. Graph theory in that field also leaves many problems unsolved. This paper is focused on a variation of Prim’s algorithm utility for a multi-sourced power system topology. The logic described in the paper is a novel concept combined with a proposal of a multi-parametrized weight calculation formula representing transmission features of energy delivered to loads present in a considered grid. The weight is expressed as the combination of three elements: real power, reactive power, and real power losses. The proposal of a novel algorithm was verified in a simulation model of a power system. The new restoration logic was compared with the proposal of the strategy presented in other recently published articles. The novel concept of restoration strategy dedicated to multi-sourced power systems was verified positively by simulations. The proposed solution proved its usefulness and applicability.

Abstract

This article discusses an unknown tradition from the Malay Archipelago, namely the island of Lombok. The article describes a spirit possession ceremony, as it was practised in East Lombok before being subject to a ban in 1984. It also explains the reasons for prohibition and explores a recent revival of the tradition. The discussion draws a parallel with similar traditions from late colonial Malaysia. Aside from similar functions as healing rites, the traditions many times use the same ceremonial equipment during the ceremonies and have identical symbols. This encourages us to look for connections between the Sasaks in Lombok and the Malays in Malaysia and Sumatra. The article suggests some direct connections between the two, but also takes indirect connections into consideration, for example, the rule of the Bugis-Makassarese people, who played an important role in both of these corners of the archipelago.

Abstract

This paper presents the Steinhof Gardens and delves into their planning history. In accordance with an urban design concept by Otto Wagner (1841–1918), the construction phase was planned and carried out by Franz Berger (1853–1938) and his team, and in 1907 the facility was opened. The garden architect Ferdinand Müller (1858–1942) played a role in the implementation of the sanatorium’s gardens. Several alterations have been made since its acquisition by the City of Vienna; a care manual is still lacking.
