Abstract

Th is paper aims to present the history of a precious manuscript from the collections of the Kórnik Library – Autograf Kościuszki. Th e manuscript, written by Tadeusz Kościuszko in mid- 1793, contains Opis kampanii r. 1792 – a description of a campaign launched against Russia. Having analysed the manuscript and discussed all the eight editions of its text, the author of the article presents its history up until the death of Józef Dobek Dzierzkowski from Lviv (1830). He subsequently discusses a brief history of Tytus Działyński’s acquaintance with Wiktor Baworowski, as contained in their mutual correspondence, which discloses the further complex fate of Autograf Kościuszki – information on its subsequent owner and the circumstances in which it found its way into the collections of the Kórnik Library. Finally, all the copies of the manuscript known from literature are discussed. In the Annex, the author publishes inter alia the abovementioned correspondence between Działyński and Baworowski.

Abstract

Badanie odwołuje się do socjologii kultury Pierre’a Bourdieu, aby odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy oglądanie współczesnej telewizji zależy od pozycji klasowej jednostek. Zastosowano wielowymiarową analizę korespondencji do danych sondażowych zebranych na lokalnej próbie w Polsce w 2017 roku, aby zrekonstruować przestrzeń preferencji telewizyjnych i zbadać, jakie czynniki społeczno-demograficzne i klasowe leżą u jej podstaw. Zidentyfikowano dwie główne opozycje gustu: nowa telewizja versus tradycyjna oraz orientacja na informację versus na rozrywkę. Opozycje te wynikają z różnic klasowych. Badanie rzuca światło na wzajemne oddziaływanie między wiekiem a pozycją społeczną w wyrażaniu klasowych dystynkcji i ujawnia różnice w pochodzeniu społecznym między typami konsumentów telewizji. Artykuł wzbogaca nasze rozumienie różnic klasowych, pokazując, w jaki sposób orientacje kulturowe w popularnym i wieloplatformowym środowisku telewizyjnym działają na rzecz wzmocnienia struktury klasowej we współczesnej Polsce.

Abstract

Correspondence was an essential form of communication in the world of the humanities in the 1960s and 1970s. The letters exchanged between Józef Andrzej Gierowski and Jacek Staszewski exemplify the scholars’ discussion of Saxon times. This collection is at the same time a reflection of the main currents of research on political history and cultural history of the 18th century. Simultaneously, it is a testimony to the struggle of historians with the black legend of the reign of August II and August III.
The article presents the nature of these conversations and the topics discussed by the scholars: an exchange of views on resources in European archives, the reigns of August II and August III, a discussion of the Enlightenment, reviews of subsequent monographs and doctoral theses prepared at seminars in Kraków and Toruń. The correspondence between the two scholars is evidence not only of a shared passion, an interest in the Saxon era, neglected for many decades and marked by a black legend, but also of an intellectual exchange between the two humanists, which in time developed into a friendship.

Abstract

In this article, the authors confront the thesis found in historical discourse about the dominance of male figures in historical narratives present in the public sphere. In order to do so, they analyse the new research field that is the social networking site YouTube and the most popular channels on historical topics contained therein. The main research question is whether women are marginalised in the narratives contained in the sources discussed, in which contexts they appear and what is the reception of the films in which they appear. In addition, the authors look at the question of the form of historical narratives. The study combines quantitative methods (descriptive statistics, correspondence analysis) as well as qualitative methods (Northrop Frye’s typology of story motifs. For this purpose, 551 films were analysed, which were then annotated using seven groups of tags corresponding to the content of the sources ‑ concerning the func-tioning of female characters and the subject matter of the films. As a result of the analyses carried out, it was observed that the thesis of the absolute dominance of male characters in historical narratives does not fully hold true under the conditions of Web 2.0 sources in terms of quantity, while in terms of content it cannot be accepted unreservedly in the context of the very diverse use of female themes in social media resources.

Abstract

Polish musical criticism of 19th century is a fascinating research field for musicologists, music theorists, as well as literary scholars. They can find there a wealth of texts whose expressive style tries to emulate the homage paid to the great virtuosos of the time in poetry. While Frederick Chopin and the violinist Karol Lipiński held sway over captive audiences, there was yet another musician whose name featured prominently in reviews and poems. It was Stanisław Szczepanowski, the great guitarist, whose concerts gave rise to numerous reviews representing the romantic school of musical criticism. This paper examines some of those reviews as well as two poems dedicated to Szczepanowski, one by Teofil Lenartowicz and the other by Władysław Syrokomla.

Abstract

In this paper, I present a short 10-point characteristics of the classical conception of truth. Subsequently I point to the importance and comprehensive usefulness of this truth, among others, to the possibility of applying it in some virtual environments, e.g., in those which include virtual objects of types A and C. I also emphasize that—independently of views of promotors and creators of the “post-truth era” (e.g. the will of politicians, propagandists and the authors of conspiracy theories)—truth as it is grasped in the classical theory is in principle non-withdrawable from social discourse, including its philosophical and scientific fields.

Abstract

W artykule omówiono materiały archiwalne Oddziału Gdańskiego ZLP za lata 1946–2000. Archiwalia, w formie zdekompletowanej, trafiły do Pracowni Rękopisów PAN Biblioteki Gdańskiej na podstawie umowy darowizny z 12 października 2016 roku. Formalnym darczyńcą był Gdański Oddział Stowarzyszenia Pisarzy Polskich. Materiały archiwalne, liczące ponad 16.000 obiektów, zostały uporządkowane, pogrupowane i opracowane przez autorkę artykułu. W wyniku prac nad archiwaliami powstało 116 jednostek akcesyjnych (122 tomy w 133 woluminach), których zawartość została ujęta w grupy formalno-rzeczowe. Złożyła się na nie obszerna dokumentacja dotycząca: spraw organizacyjnych związku, planowania i sprawozdawczości, korespondencji Oddziału, ewidencji osobowej, finansów, spraw socjalno-bytowych, opracowań i materiałów redakcyjnych, współpracy z instytucjami krajowymi i zagranicznymi oraz kół i klubów działających w Oddziale, w tym także Podstawowej Organizacji Partyjnej PZPR. Dokumentację załącznikową stanowią wycinki prasowe związane z działalnością Oddziału, druki zaproszeń, wzory różnych formularzy, itp. Omawiając poszczególne grupy formalno-rzeczowe dokumentacji i stan ich zachowania, czy też sygnalizując luki w materiałach archiwalnych, autorka podjęła także próbę rekonstrukcji historii Oddziału Gdańskiego ZLP, w tym panującej wśród członków atmosfery oraz występujących problemów (braki lokalowe, kwestie wydawnicze, warunki bytowe pisarzy, itp.). Artykułowi towarzyszy aneks zawierający wykaz archiwaliów z opisem i numeracją poszczególnych jednostek akcesyjnych.

Abstract

W spuściźnie archiwalnej Mieczysława Wallisa znajdują się teczki zawierające jego wspomnienia oraz korespondencję z Henrykiem Elzenbergiem, ukazujące doniosłość i znaczenie roli, jaką przyjaźń z Wallisem odegrała w życiu toruńskiego filozofa. Wallis pełnił wobec niego rolę powiernika, doradcy, a nawet mentora, nie tylko na niwie prywatnej, ale także i naukowej. Elzenberg wielokrotnie konsultował z nim swe twórcze plany, prosił o opinię dotyczącą powstających opracowań i koncepcji twórczych, a także dzielił się swoimi dylematami naukowymi i twórczymi. Co ważne, w Wallisowskich archiwaliach znajdują się także wspomnienia dotyczące jego osobistej oceny najważniejszych dzieł i koncepcji twórczych Elzenberga, wzbogacające dotychczasową wiedzę o kontekście ich powstania czy ukonstytuowania.

Abstract

Looking at something is considered a fundamental act of awareness. What constitutes its embodied manifestation – the gaze – can be realized as a specific axiological variant of the value of evil. The article is devoted to this particular, closed-in-the‑gaze manifestation of the value of evil in the literary work. The point of reference is identified in two famous epic works: Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann (1947) and The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell (2006). The evil gaze identifies the main characters of either novel, Adrian Leverkühn and Maximilian Aue. Whether the artistic structuring of the evil gaze is presented in the novels with the same means, or perhaps with the use of different tools of literary transmission of axiological content, is the issue lying at the center of considerations. In fact, it is not the only issue, as it is part of a broader reflection on the so-called restraining of values in a literary work in general. (Translated from Polish by Katarzyna Rogalska‑Chodecka)

Abstract

This is a presentation of letters regarding Maria Konopnicka from the Maria Dulębianka Papers held at the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. After Maria Konopnicka's death in 1910 Dulębianka kept in touch with the poet's youngest sister Celina Świrska and her daughter Laura Pytlińska. Apart from tracing letters and notes written by Konopnicka's close relatives, the author of this presentation has gone through the letters of a wide circle of Maria Dulębianka's friends and acquaintances, among them Jan Baudoin de Courtenay, Stanisław Karol Lineburg (social activist from Suwałki) and Paulina Kuczalska-Reinschmitt (women's rights activist). Their correspondence gives a better insight into various facets of Dulębianka's life, her relations with Maria Konopnicka and the poet's close relatives. Some letters and notes contain information about behind-the-scenes arrangements to dispose of Konopnicka's country home at Żarnowiec and Dulębianka's collection of paintings (including her portraits of Maria Konopnicka).
