Abstract

The article discusses the features of 19th-century periodicals from Wilno (Vilnius). In the first part of the 19th century Wilno (Vilnius) became an important cultural centre which influenced the intellectual life of the rest of the region. The literary magazines which have survived in the library’s holdings („Dziennik Wileński”, „Gazetę Literacką Wileńską”, „Tygodnik Wileński”, „Wiadomości Brukowe”, „Wizerunki i Roztrząsania Naukowe”, „Znicz”, „Rusałka”, „Athenaeum”, „Rubon”, „Pamiętnik Naukowo-Literacki”) reflect the diversity of the intellectual life in Wilno. The author provided detailed information about the editors and their magazines focusing on the literary and cultural character of the periodicals. In 1851 the final issue of the „Athenaeum” (ed. By I. K. Krasicki) was published; the date has been interpreted as a turning point, after which no periodical was brought out in Wilno for the following six-year period.

Abstract

The article examines the relationship between the lyrics and prose of Mieczysław Romanowski, the most talented poet of the last generation of the Romantics, and the work of other contributors of the weekly magazine Dziennik Literacki, published in Lwów between 1852 and 1870. Although their concerns and poetics have a lot in common, the high tone of Romanowski’s patriotic art is distinctly his own. In this article the analysis of his poetry is complemented by an examination of his essays and other writings which contain his views on contemporary social issues.

Abstract

This paper is a contribution to research on the reflection on art in literary criticism and cultural journalism of the interwar period. It discusses the interest in graphic arts of the Silesian born right-wing reviewer and literary critic, Alfred Jesionowski (1902–1945?), which resulted in his popularizing discussions on the works of such artistic personalities of the interwar period as Paweł Steller (wood engraver and watercolourist), Stanisław Brzęczkowski (wood engraver) and Jan Kuglin (typographer).
