Abstract

The article deals with the history of competition and standardization between the variants од‑/ від‑ (both as preposition and prefix) in the Ukrainian language. Historically they are related to different groups of dialects. In the southwestern dialectal zone, with the exception of the northern dialects of the Volyn and Carpathian areas, the variant від‑ prevails, while the variant од‑ is predominant in the north of the country. The variant од‑ was typical for standard Ukrainian of the 19th‑early 20th century. After a period of competition with від‑ it lost out because of the artificial limitation of its use. This happened in the early 20th century due to the desire to employ forms that would give the literary language a national character, since the від‑ variant is notably different from both Polish and Russian. The history of од‑/ від‑ competition is investigated on the material of dictionaries, 1920s’ grammars and modern linguistic research. The history of од‑/ від‑ preposition and prefix variants was researched as well within the Ukrainian language corpus, which includes texts from the 19th to the 21st centuries. Shown are the points of variation related to regional and chronological properties, to authors’ individual preferences and to certain lexemes.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to list errors in the use of prepositions in Italian, which are made by first‑year students at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw. We have analysed the written final examination papers of students who started learning Italian without prior knowledge of the language. The identified errors have been classified and for each group of errors we have indicated the potential cause of their occurrence. The conclusions of our research can raise language awareness as to the correct usage of the Italian prepositions.

Abstract

In search of the invariant semantics of the preposition “da”: a cognitive analysis of the predicative context – The purpose of this article is to verify whether the semantic invariant of the preposition da [starting point allowing physical or mental movement] in the nominal context remains valid in the context of the verb. The analysis of the content of predicates that link to the preposition da will help to answer the question of the extent to which the choice of a preposition is determined by the knowledge of the experienced activities and/or the predicate itself (its selective features) or if it is the result of convention.

Abstract

The author analyzes the two most common synonymous Greek prepositions ἐν and εἰς in the texts of the New Testament. She begins with a description of the basic syntactic functions of Greek prepositions, then goes on to analyze the status of two selected prepositions, pointing to the differences in their meaning and their dependence on the connectivity with specific noun cases. The last part of the text is devoted to the pre-verbal value of the prepositions under the study and the compound verbs based on them, which are combined with the verbs without prefixes, which are their basis. This starting point allows conclusions of a syntactic-semantic nature based on the use of the studied forms in the Greek New Testament texts.

Abstract

A reading of the etymologies suggested by Wiesław Boryś, both in lexica and in numerous articles, makes us realize in a particularly acute manner the incompatibility of our linguistic competence in the evaluation of the motivation relations of Old Polish derivatives. The problem that was put forward was illustrated on the basis of Old Polish noun derivatives with the prefix wą‑ ( wądół, wąwał, wątok), the nominal equivalent of the verbal vъn‑/* vъ‑ (the PIE *on before a consonant yielded ϙ). In the Old Polish material there are also numerous lexemes structured on the basis of the Proto‑Slavic * ‑ϙtr‑/ ‑ętr‑, preceded by the syllable‑onset wn‑, which indicated an internal location ( wnątrz, wnętrze, wnętrek, wnętrzny etc.). The Old Polish lexemes with wą‑ and wn‑+‑ ϙtr‑/ ‑ętr‑ that were described compel us to put forward a legitimate thesis that our ancestors perceived them in a different manner than the modern users of the Polish language, that they were aware of word‑formative divisibility. They perceived them as nouns which originated on the basis of prepositional expressions, therefore they should be classed under the following heading: Derivatives formed on the basis of expressions with the preposition w‑ / wn‑ / ‑.
