Abstract

This article is about selected issues in women’s sports, and above all the modest participation of women in so-called leisure sports. Statistical data concerning Poland and other countries (particularlyWestern Europe) is presented. The fashion for jogging, which is currently being seen in Poland as well, is analyzed. The author’s own research, done in 2013 and involving 865 participants in the Łódź ‘I Care About My Health’ Marathon, documents the smallness of women’s interest in participating in marathon struggles. On the basis of the information collected in the study’s survey questionnaires, it was possible for the author to create a socio-demographic portrait of the female Polish long-distance runner. It was also possible to note the sociologically interesting and elucidating difference between men and women in the sphere of training and in their running careers/biographies.

Abstract

The article’s subject is the status of the homosexual minority in the world of sports, which–as one would assume–is a hetero-normative world. The author draws attention to the different situations of lesbians and gays in sports as a result both of the manner in which sports themselves are seen and of how femininity andmasculinity in sports are viewed (certain types of sports activity are perceived as being masculine, and certain as being feminine). The attitudes of the male and female athletes themselves are described, as well as the attitude towards them in the sports environment and their perception in public opinion. The Gay Games, competitions for sexual minorities, are also presented, with their relation to mainstream (heterosexual) sports. Particular attention is paid to the ambiguous status of sexual minorities and various practices used within these milieus and towards them.

Abstract

During the interwar period, period many examples of sports facilities were built in the Second Polish Republic. These groups of facilities had one function designed for practicing a specific sport discipline but also multifunctional facilities were also built. Sports centres played a role not only enabling amateur exercises and improving sports skills but they were also the seats of sports societies, unions, clubs or circles that associated sports enthusiasts and promoted the development of physical fitness through sport. The activity of such groups was necessary due to the political and economic situation of the country at that time. The period of the first half of the interwar period was a time of state reconstruction, uncertainty and challenges for society after the end of the First World War. The reconstruction of the country also concerned the sports infrastructure, in which apart from facilities with a form resulting directly from their function (stands, halls, ski jumps) formal buildings were also built. One of the examples of such facilities is the Sports House in Lviv, designed by Jerzy Nechay. The example of the Sports House in Lviv and its formal location a short distance from the city centre is an example of modern design that combines a form of use with a formal function.

Abstract

This article discusses the image of sports fans in the cartoons published in the illustrated weekly Przegląd Sportowy between 1921 and 1939. The discussion also includes pictorial representations of sports audiences against the background of our knowledge of contem-porary group behavior and analyses of individual cartoons in their direct context. Furthermore, the article tries to assess the affective aspect of the cartoons, i.e. the message they address to their readers. Finally, in the course of this examination we have managed to identify the authors of most of the cartoons.

Abstract

In the early 1990s, the first questions began to arise about the legitimacy of large-scale projects, made on a grand scale for sports events, lasting only a short period. Doubts were not only raised about the organizers’ budgets and the debts often left behind, but also about the impact of these projects on the environment and society. During this time, the word ‘legacy‘ also appeared — in academic discourse, defining the remnants of these competitions. The two most recent editions of the Summer Olympics in Europe were analysed, which did not differ in scale, but due to being played over a longer interval, differed in the awareness of the organizers and the knowledge of how to plan projects more sustainably. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that the design of Olympic venues in the context of the idea of an Olympic legacy should take into account elements of a strategy for the duration of these venues over time. It is only over a longer period of time that one can assess whether these original assumptions were correct, and the region gained valuable spaces for recreation, or whether they led to the creation of costly unfunctional sports facilities.

Abstract

The sports landscape is constantly changing due to innovation and entrepreneurship. The availability of technology led to the emergence of esports and augmented sports. Biofeedback and sensing technologies can be used for athlete monitoring and training purposes. Research on motor control deals with planning and execution of bodily movements and provides some insights towards formal presentation of sports.
Previous research provided many sports categorization models. On many occasions, published articles did not distinguish competitive gameplay activities (gaming) from athletic performance (esports). Our goal was to define esports by extending existing universal sport definitions and propose a novel modular computational framework for categorizing sports through environments and signals.
We have fulfilled our goals by illustrating how signals flow within competitive (sports) environments. Our esports definition introduces esports as a group of sports similar to motorsports. Moreover, we have defined mathematical foundations for signal processing by various actors (athletes, referees, environments, intermediate processing steps). We have demonstrated that representing sports as a multidimensional signal can lead to the categorization of sports through computation. We claim that our approach could be applied to transfer training methods from similar sports, analysis of the training process, and referee error measurement.
Our study was not without limitations. Further research is required to validate our theoretical model by embedding available variables in latent space to calculate similarity measures between sports.

Abstract

The book outlines the artistic events accompanying the large sports events in 1928: the 9th Olympic Games in Amsterdam and the 1st Summer Spartakiad in Moskow and 2nd Summer Spartakiad planned in Prague, which, however, was cancelled. The organization, character, and cultural influence of these events are outlined, while selected works of art connected to these events are analysed in meticulous detail. The author points out the general differences between the Olympic Games and the Spartakiads both in the approach to sports events, and the accompanying artistic events. The Olympic Games stressed the individualistic approach to art and creative work, and encouraged international competition. The Spartakiads were aiming at collective approach to both art and sports, which were seen not as competition between nations, but a collective effort of the Proletariat.

Abstract

Theory and practice of sport psychology suggest that emotional and behavioral states of anxiety and aggression both affect athletic performance. The aim of the present study was the investigation of possible differentiation among water -polo male and female players according to their anxiety, anger and aggression levels. The sample consisted of 225 players (120 men, 105 women), between the ages of 17–39 years old. They completed the Greek versions of the: (a) CSAI -2, and (b) CAAS instruments. Results revealed differences among almost all questionnaire variables, between sport (athletic) experience’ groups. Finally, male athletes of the 2nd national division identified greater levels of anger and aggression in comparison to all other division groups. Overall, results shine some light on facets that play an important role and can affect the athletic performance of water -polo players.

Abstract

Introduction: The history of using performance-enhancing substances (PES) is long and it goes back to ancient times. At present, PES are employed at all levels of sport competition, starting from Olympic level contestants to individuals recreationally involved in various sports disciplines.

Purpose: The objective of the study was examining the views on doping in sports in a group of physicians, together with evaluating the frequency of their contacts with this phenomenon, in their professional activities.

Methods: The investigation was carried out using a validated questionnaire developed by the authors. Questionnaire included 34 questions divided into 6 sections. In total, 257 individuals participated in the study. The percentage of answers was 75.81%.

Results: Among the responders, 96.50% believed that using PES by sports competitors represented unethical behavior. 42% participants declared that they met doping problem during their professional career. Almost one-third of the physicians (28.79%) declared that during their work, they consulted patient suffering from adverse side eff ects resulting from using PES.

Conclusions: In Poland, physicians regard using PES as unethical behavior. They believe that a health care system professional should participate in counteracting doping in sports. Physicians — regardless of their specialty — are also exposed to PES-related problems in their professional work. In view of the above facts and the consistently increasing popularity of PES, extending the knowledge in this field among physicians seems to be of importance to allow for their offering better medical services to their patients.

Abstract

The aim of the presented work is to prove that construction of large sports facilities in the urban space, can generate positive changes and revitalization of degraded areas. On the basis of comparative analysis of cases in which such activities took place, it can be concluded that locating these facilities in heavily degraded urban areas is one of the most eff ective methods of large-scale revitalization. This is mainly visible in post-industrial areas, which are usually well linked to canals, rivers and other waterways or reservoirs. The vast spaces around sports facilities create favorable conditions for additional recreational functions, such as parks and green areas, which in connection with water become a very attractive place for the residents of the city. Increasing interest in the area leads to new investments such as housing estates and gradual development of a multi-functional urban structure. One of the most important factors leading to this type of transformation is the modernization of the communication infrastructure which enables connection between revitalized areas and the rest of the city. A well-planned program of newly emerging sports facilities is also an extremely important factor. As research shows, large multifunctional sports and entertainment facilities, can function as a new kind of public space in the city. This leads not only to the establishment of completely new social relations, but also to the creation of jobs and the general improvement of the broadly understood image of the district.

Abstract

Although currently pole dancing is growing in popularity due to its sport dimension, it seems that such a form of expression is still commonly associated with strip clubs and connotes above all the erotic performance of a woman in front of a male audience. And yet, as one can find by frequenting dance studios that teach pole dancing, it is practiced not only by women, but also by men and children. Thus keeping in mind the ambiguity that arises at the intersection of competing optics in decoding the pole dance—with regard to “perpetuate interpretation logic” and the everyday experience of people undertaking the activity—the aim of this paper is to reflect on the issue of constructing and interpreting the meanings of actions and processes within the context of pole dancing. These processes can be seen as a reflection of the everyday life in which they occur.

Abstract

The 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar was held in eight stadiums. It was a unique event in many ways, including the fact that seven (out of eight) new stadiums were built specifically for the World Cup. The result was modern facilities, both in terms of their attractive and innovative architectural design and the structural, technological and infrastructural solutions.
The 2022 World Cup was treated as a priority project that would spearhead extensive publicity and promotion of Qatar. For this reason, all venues were spatially and architecturally designed according to a shared set of principles. In particular, they were designed with reference to the key elements that constitute the identity and cultural heritage of the Qatari community.
One important common feature of all the stadiums is that they were designed with the community’s sports infrastructure needs in mind, even after the end of the World Cup. For this reason, partial dismantling and a reduction of the volume of the facility, or complete demolition of the facility, was taken into account during the design stage.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the architectural features of the sports stadiums of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, to identify the general design principles and considerations and to provide conclusions on the architecture of these facilities.
The case study was used as the primary research method and the scope of the study covered eight sports stadiums of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The research was conducted by studying and analysing documents, papers, and promotional materials, etc. related to the 2022 World Cup from online sources.
