Abstract

The main thesis of this paper is the assertion that, in contrast to the prevailing opinion about the decline or deep crisis of the intelligentsia, it is precisely this social group—and especially its elite—that is the dominant actor in social life. This thesis emerges from an analysis of the role of the intelligentsia, using ‘longue durée’ categories and also the broader international perspective of ‘world system theory’, in which Poland is assigned to the (semi)-periphery. Elements of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, particularly the idea of cultural capital and the field of power, are an important theoretical poin in the author’s argument. In this view, the structurally privileged position of the intelligentsia in Poland is understood as an aspect of the specific configuration of the Polish field of power, in which—at least since the end of the First World War—cultural capital turns out to be the strongest and most stable dimension in the creation and reproduction of elite social positions.

Abstract

The article deals with the issue of the meaning of the Polish early education coursebooks for conservation/change in educational practices. It is the liberal and constructivist discourse to which the coursebook authors should refer (especially in the context of the present time and democracy) if these books are to become a tool of the prodevelopmental and emancipatory interest of both students and society. However, the research on Polish coursebooks for early education (grades I – III), show that this very condition has not been ful3 lled. In such a situation it is the German school coursebooks that might be inspiring because of their discursive background as well as of the methodological proposals and the range of content present in them. The article is also an attempt to reconstruct “the image of school” present in German early education coursebooks. It is possible to name and describe the key dimensions in this image such as: the democratic nature of teacher-student relations, the focus on the activation of students’ personal knowledge as well as on their ethical and cognitive autonomy, realistic vision of the world, trust in students’ competences, and creating the sphere of the nearest development.

Abstract

The author considers the mechanisms limiting women’s access to power and the validity of their advance to positions of authority. She uses research into two extremely different social institutions–the Italian Mafia and the Polish Sejm (parliament)–in an attempt to illustrate that the contemporary process of redefining traditional cultural concepts of gender is not only an indicator of the spread of pro-equality attitudes but could equally well be considered an element of activity intended to preserve the patriarchal order. From this viewpoint, the ad hoc reconstructing of cultural concepts of gender is chiefly aimed at maintaining the constituting principle of the patriarchy–maintaining men’s domination at the price of breaking men’s monopoly on power. This process could therefore be perceived also as a symptom of the durability of the patriarchal model of social ties.

Abstract

In my review article of Solarska’s book Historia Zrewoltowana. Pisarstwo historyczne Michela Foucaulta jako diagnoza teraźniejszości i projekt przyszłości I’m trying to reconstruct and analyze possible way of speaking about Foucault’s historical writing proposed by author. This original manner shows that intellectual heritage of French philosopher endlessly presents an effective inspiration. Solarska conducts in three next chapters specific dialogue with Michel Foucault, being under his great charm. However this charm is not one-dimensional relation. It remains a multiple game, which result cannot be anticipate to the very end.

Abstract

The author reflects on the evaluation of the notion of money in history. In many situations coins and banknotes were a proof for the existence of local, independent, political power. People’s attitude toward money was quite an important matter, too; in many situations neither money nor those professionally dealing with money were appreciated socially. Numerous utopian movements disliked money. Communism was one of them. The communist economy was driven — at least in theory — by overwhelming planning rather than by the incentive of money. After the fall of communism a question arised whether all or nearly all public activity should be driven by money or whether some domains of social activity should rather be kept as public domains.

Abstract

Autor rekonstruuje w tekście główne wątki filozofii nauk humanistycznych Jürgena Mittelstrassa. Niemiecki filozof wychodząc od krytyki tzw. funkcjonalistycznej, dualistycznej koncepcji humanistyki autorstwa J. Rittera-O. Marquarda, staje na stanowisku metodologicznego monizmu zakładającego jedność wszystkich nauk na gruncie uniwersalnych reguł racjonalności. Szuka przy tym symptomów tej jedności zarówno w tendencjach transdyscyplinarnych współczesnej nauki, jak i w pewnych wspólnych założeniach epistemologicznych oraz podobieństwach praktyk badawczych nauk. Autor zwraca uwagę na inspiracje kantowskie Mittelstrassa, który adaptuje interesująco dla potrzeb swej argumentacji kategorię „władzy sądzenia”. W podsumowaniu rozważań pojawiają się obok pozytywnej ogólnej oceny omawianej koncepcji także pewne uwagi krytyczne autora pod jej adresem.

Abstract

The subject of this article is an analysis of the earliest of Karl Marx’s articles, Comments on the Latest Prussian Censorship Instruction. The essence of his views presented in that article was to protest against the restriction of the right to free expression of opinions by journalists. Marx pointed out that the new Prussian Censorship Instruction only seemed to liberalize censorship, but in fact in many aspects tightened the rules, for example, reinforced those that pertained to religious criticism. He thought that the Prussian Censorship Instruction was not an enactment of law, because by limiting freedom, lawmakers acted against the essence of the press, law and state. Marx thought that a press law was needed to guarantee freedom of the press and that censorship should be abolished entirely.

Abstract

In the second part of the article, the history of standardization programmes concerning the names of physiographic objects is discussed. The basis of the standardization programme currently followed by the Commission on Names of Localities and Physiographic Objects is described. The paper also presents the criteria of linguistic correctness adopted by the previous standardization commissions as well as by the present one. Issues of linguistic correctness of geographical names with dialectal properties and of names borrowed from minority languages are discussed. Attention is paid to some structural discrepancies in the approaches to the issue of correctness taken by the Commission on Names of Localities and Physiographic Objects and by local authorities.

Abstract

Zgodnie z postulatem Maksa Webera, socjologia może przewidywać i wyjaśniać działania pod warunkiem ich wcześniejszego zrozumienia. Prezentowany artykuł rozszerza ten postulat na zjawiska społeczne w makroskali, dla których socjologia może szukać sensu, nawet jeśli nie jest on widoczny dla działających podmiotów. Perspektywą, która umożliwia taki zabieg, jest teoria zróżnicowania funkcjonalnego. Została ona zastosowana do opisania roli sędziowskiej, której znaczenie można właściwie skonceptualizować jedynie w kontekście relacji między systemami społecznymi. Autor wychodzi od koncepcji Niklasa Luhmanna, by zerwać z jego ujęciem i za Shmuelem Eisenstadtem zwrócić się w stronę systemu wartości, który mógłby legitymizować rolę sędziowską. Argumentacja autora podbudowana jest wynikami badań empirycznych i uzupełniającą je typologią procesów legitymizacji i delegitymizacji roli sędziowskiej. W konkluzji autor przedstawia konsekwencje teoretyczne sporów wokół roli sędziego oraz możliwości socjologicznego odczytywania aktualnych wydarzeń politycznych w Polsce.

Abstract

Our purpose in this paper is to show how the output of academic student-writers demonstrates the different ways in which they react to the discipline’s discoursal demands and how that, in turn, forms their writer identity. We also argue that the current Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory fails to adequately integrate notions of second language (L2) academic writer identity and the social contexts in which L2 writers produce their texts.

Abstract

This Paper takes in consideration the Social teaching of the Church, particularly expressed in the Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis Laudato si’ and in other documents of the Magisterium. The article presents the basic characteristics of „Culture of Care” and „Culture of Waste”, of biopower, of positive biopolitics and of negative biopolitics (thanatobiopolitics) with some alarming examples (legalization of abortion, selective abortions of females, destruction of supernumerary frozen embryos, lobbying for the legalization of euthanasia). Subsequently, it introduces the contribution of the Christian faith to these debates, from the biblical, theological and moral point of view, and invites the reader to respond to the urgent challenges in biopolitics by the responsible creativity in the social, moral and political fields. The „Culture of Care” is a culture of acceptance of the other, shaped by Christian hope and love, a culture of presence and of interest in the other, following the example of Jesus Christ.

Abstract

Celem artykułu jest omówienie i uzupełnienie (doprecyzowanie) teorii granic społecznych. Przedstawiam metodologiczne podstawy teorii oraz odnoszę się do badań terenowych prowadzonych przeze mnie w dwureligijnej społeczności lokalnej w zachodniej części Macedonii Północnej. Charakteryzuję główne pytania i siatkę pojęciową teorii, w tym kluczowe pojęcie granic społecznych oraz typy procesów podtrzymywania granic społecznych, takie jak wykluczenie, stygmatyzacja, konflikt, ograniczanie relacji. Streszczam kontrowersje związane z wyjaśnieniem społecznych uwarunkowań podtrzymywania granic społecznych, w tym kontekście analizuję krytycznie koncepcje Fredrika Bartha oraz Andreasa Wimmera. W dalszej części prezentuję proponowane przez siebie uzupełnienie teorii. Polega ono na doprecyzowaniu wyjaśnienia procesów podtrzymywania granic społecznych. Dowodzę, że podtrzymywanie granic społecznych przeciwdziała „społecznym precedensom”, czyli powtarzającym się naruszeniom specyficznych zasad generatywnych warunkujących odtwarzanie określonych form społecznych stosunków władzy. Na koniec wskazuję pytania i problemy, do jakich prowadzi przedstawiona tu propozycja teoretyczna.

Abstract

During World War II a group of Polish exiles from the prewar Piłsudski faction issued at irregular intervals a bulletin called Letters from London. It published articles criticizing the Prime Minister in Exile General Wła-dysław Sikorski, and more vehemently, his successor Stanisław Mikołajczyk, for bowing down British and American pressure and making unacceptable conces-sions to the Soviet Union.

Abstract

Socjologiczne badania par intymnych wiążą się z szeregiem dylematów etycznych. Niektóre z nich łączą się z kwestiami badania życia prywatnego, a zatem pytaniami o to, czemu, jak i w jakich warunkach osoby badane dzielą się z badaczami lub badaczkami swoimi doświadczeniami, a także, jaka relacja badawcza przy tej okazji kształtuje się między tymi dwiema stronami. Rozpatrujemy problem symetryczności relacji badacza/ badaczki z parą, problem wykorzystywania wiedzy pozyskanej jedynie od jednej osoby tak, by nie zaszkodzić parze, a także specyﬁczne dylematy związane z relacjami władzy pomiędzy badaczami a badanymi oraz rolami, w jakich badacze/badaczki są obsadzani przez parę. Dylematy te dyskutujemy w odniesieniu do przykładów z własnych badań terenowych pochodzących z trzech projektów badawczych.

Abstract

The engraving presenting a view of the interior of the Library of the Council of the City of Gdansk was made in 1687 – just like the other 56 engravings showing the city in Reinhold Curicke’s work Der Stadt Dantzig historische Beschreibung (Amsterdam and Gdansk 1687). The author of the article analysed the view in terms of its style, technique and iconography. Reaching back to 1596, she presented the circumstances in which the Library of the Council of the City of Gdansk was established in its initial location, referring to the political situation in the Commonwealth after Sigismund III Vasa, a supporter of the counter-reformation directed at the Protestant Gdansk, ascended to the throne. Analysing the artistic value of the view on the interior of the Library, the author accentuated the appropriate decorum, differentiating the engraving in question from Curicke’s other illustrations forming a part of his work. According to the author, the above resulted from the fact that the city authorities wanted to highlight the role of child-rearing, education and science in the development of Gdansk. The message was expressed in a baroquising style allegorizing the image of science. It is this intention which makes the view of the interior of the Library different from the other realistic views of the structures, fragments of the city and suburban areas of Gdansk.
