Abstract

The article discusses Jacek Malczewski’s paintings based on the Gospel, in which the artist depicts Christ giving him his own face. It presents a new interpretation of the paintings from this group, taking as an example two versions of the theme ‘Christ and the Samaritan Woman’. The works were analysed in the context of the artist’s often declared attachment to the teachings of the Catholic Church, in relation to the iconographic tradition and because of the planimetric features of their visual structure. In conclusion, the paintings were considered as a means for the viewer to both recognise the autonomy of art in relation to the biographical context, and to turn towards the universal message of the Gospel.

Abstract

The article is devoted to contemporary studies on the nineteenth century memoirs written by Russian women. In the nineteenth century women’s memoirs were underestimated and neglected by researchers. Recently, there has been a signifi cant increase in research interest in memoirs written by women. This subject has been taken up by literary scholars, historians, experts on cultural studies and anthropologists. A. Bielova, I. Savkina, W. Laszczak, K. Kosowska, N. Pushkariova, A. Fieduta, W. Ponomarieva, L. Khoroshilova, J. Prikazchikova, A. Stankewich, J. Samofalova, O. Mamaieva, S. Tatarkina are among those who are interested in it. Memoirs are a valuable source of information about the epoch, historical events, outstanding leaders, event-making fi gures, Russian intellectual elites, aristocracy as well as the everyday life of the Russian gentry. They also provide some insight into the way female memoirists expressed themselves in their writings, their views on femininity and the role of women in society.

Abstract

Regaining independence by each country (Tunisia, Morocco 1956, Algeria 1962) and the publication of relevant documents (codes of family law, constitutions) created opportunities to speak more widely about social and economic rights, or about political rights for women. However, the rights granted to women were characterized by the principle of inequality, especially in Algeria and Morocco. In this difficult and complex situation, the emancipation movement of women went through various phases. In Algeria, its strength began to appear at the turn of the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century and has been constantly increased. In Morocco, in principle, the awakening took place in the early nineties of the twentieth century. Women themselves played a significant role in the activities for emancipation, engaging in various undertakings, organizations and associations, and in activating Non Profit Organizations (Organisation Non-Gouvernementale -ONG) with women participation from the end of the 80s of the twentieth century, which, in its turn, created opportunities for legal reforms, which would not exist without activities carried out by various associations, including women’s associations. The Jasmine Revolution, also known as the Arabic spring, was initiated in Tunisia, and has had a significant impact on the contemporary activities of women.

Abstract

The article’s aim is to show that La Fronde, a daily founded by Marguerite Durand, is a place of various manifestations, especially the will to change the political and social domain, and above all the status of a woman in society. The analytical corpus includes texts dealing with political rights (voting rights) and civil rights (the right to work), which were published in January and February 1899.

Abstract

Ultrasonic projection imaging is similar to X-ray radiography. Nowadays, ultrasonic projection methods have been developed in the set-up of multi-element flat arrays with miniature transducers, where one of the array acts as a transmitter and the other one is a receiver. In the paper, a new method of the projection imaging using a 1024-element circular ultrasonic transducer array is presented. It allows the choice of a projection scanning plane for any angle around a studied object submerged in water. Fast acquisition of measurement data is achieved as a result of parallel switching of opposite transmitting and receiving transducers in the circular array and vertical movement of the array. The algorithm equalizing the length of measurement rays and the distances between them was elaborated for the reconstruction of projection images. Projection research results of breast phantom obtained by means of the elaborated measurement set-up and compared with mammography simulations (acquired through overlapping of X-ray tomographic images) show that ultrasonic projection method presented in this paper (so-called ultrasonic mammogra-phy) can be applied to the woman's breast and be used as a diagnosis for an early detection of cancerous lesions. It can, most of all, be used as an alternative or complementary method to standard mammography, which is harmful because of ionizing radiation and invasive due to the mechanical compression of tissue.

Abstract

“A school of virtues, kindness, love”: Salani series of romances as modelling text for “New Italy” women – The woman, seen as a children /citizens educator, in United Italy’s nation-building becomes target of an educational action entrusted to publishing industry. The Salani Collection, which is here pragmatically and linguistically analyzed, represents an emblematic example of serial narrative: the author hides himself in the texts as well that the publishing house is the addresser; the novel becomes a model with a unique moral and behavioral message, spread by an accessible language shaped on Tuscan.

Abstract

The private correspondence between Françoise de Graffigny and Antoine-François Devaux allows us to trace the genesis of the epistolary novel Lettres d'une Péruvienne and the five-act play Cénie, two works considered best-sellers of the 18th century. These letters help us understand her working methods (self- censorship, her conception of the female author, her relationship with her main characters, her surrounding environment, etc.) as well as the motivations behind her writing (primarily the need for money), to the extent that they can be considered drafts of both works. The interplay between Françoise de Graffigny’s biography and her fictional female characters is evident from the start, and the reconstruction of the genesis of these works demonstrates how literary creation becomes a means of self- reflection and the creation of a feminine self. This contribution will seek to demonstrate how, in her two most well-known works, Graffigny uses the figure of the stranger, in all its senses, to highlight the difficulties women faced in 18th-century society, showing through the cases of Zilia and Cénie that women were considered ‘like’ foreigners in their own country, in their own homes.

Abstract

Tristan et Iseut represents one of the most famous profane literary works of the 12th century. In its original form, the novel was conceived in parte hominum. The first editions were entitled ‘Le Roman de Tristan’ and the plot was articulated around the figure of the male hero. As the work spread throughout courts and villages alike, among ordinary people, attention increasingly shifted from Tristan to Isolde. This work attempts to analyse samples of the various versions of Tristan and Isolde through the figure of the female protagonist. The synchronic and diachronic analysis pays particular attention to aspects related to eros and passion, as useful elements to reveal the broader theme of the status of women in the Middle Ages and its relationship with sexuality.

Abstract

Reflecting on the question of the contemporary condition of historical thinking, focusing on the case study of Poland, I consider the causes of the crisis of authority of the professional historian in the modern information society, in particular the lack of interaction between academic historiography and society. Against this backdrop, I propose a reflection on a possible modifica-tion of the understanding of the historian's profession for the sake of dialogue with the "ordin-ary" recipient of history.

Abstract

Current research into the life and work of Kazimiera Alberti, a poet and writer popular in the interwar period, connected from 1930 with Biała Krakowska, owes a great deal to Jacek Proszyk, who in 2009 staged a spectacle based on her biography at the Teatr Polski in Bielsko Biała called The Literary Salon of Kazimiera Alberti. It was followed by a spate of publications which, at this point, form a body of work ready for reassessment. This article deals with one of them, written by Karolina Pospiszil, where it is claimed that the heroine of Ci, którzy przyjdą ( Those Who Will Come, 1934), Helena Rumiszewska, is both a stereotyped, idealized female character. Focusing on the episodes which belie that description and show a character of considerable complexity driven by an emancipatory desire. She is not free from doubt when faced with various dilemmas, yet does she represent the ideal of the New Woman? This article addresses this question and discusses the issue of emancipation in the broader context of bourgeois culture and class, i.e. the social milieu o which Helena belongs.

Abstract

This article presents the results of a study aimed at reconstructing the image of the woman citizen promoted in the women’s magazines in 1989–1992, the first phase of the great transformation following the collapse of Poland’s socialist system. Within the scope of the study were high-circulation magazines (over 500,000 copies), including the two leading weeklies “Przyjaciółka” and “Kobieta i Życie”. A total of 208 issues of every magazine published in that time span were analyzed. The methods used included content and textual analysis, complemented by the examination of some recurrent topoi treated as indicators of some inexplicit (hidden) meanings, i.e. the attitudes of women to the process of reform, their role in the agenda for change, and the barriers they came up against in the public sphere.
