Abstract

There is a consensus in signal processing that the Gaussian kernel and its partial derivatives enable the development of robust algorithms for feature detection. Fourier analysis and convolution theory have a central role in such development. In this paper, we collect theoretical elements to follow this avenue but using the q-Gaussian kernel that is a nonextensive generalization of the Gaussian one. Firstly, we review the one-dimensional q-Gaussian and its Fourier transform. Then, we consider the two-dimensional q-Gaussian and we highlight the issues behind its analytical Fourier transform computation. In the computational experiments, we analyze the q-Gaussian kernel in the space and Fourier domains using the concepts of space window, cut-o frequency, and the Heisenberg inequality.

Abstract

The article outlines how to use the convergence of collections to determine the position of a mobile device based on the WiFi radio signal strength with the use of fuzzy sets. The main aim is the development of the method for indoor position determination based on existing WiFi network infrastructure indoors. The approach is based on the WiFi radio infrastructure existing inside the buildings and requires operating mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. An SQL database engine is also necessary as a widespread data interface. The SQL approach is not limited to the determination of the position but also to the creation of maps in which the system dening the position of the mobile device will operate. In addition, implementation issues are presented along with the distribution of the burden of performing calculations and the benets of such an approach for determining the location. The authors describe how to decompose the task of determining the position in a client-server architecture.

Abstract

In the presented paper we discuss pure versions of pushdown automata that have no extra non-input symbols. More specifically, we study pure multi-pushdown automata, which have several pushdown lists. We restrict these automata by the total orders defined over their pushdowns or alphabets and determine the accepting power of the automata restricted in this way. Moreover, we explain the significance of the achieved results and relate them to some other results in the automata theory.

Abstract

In this paper we present the analysis of the gas usage for different types of buildings. First, we introduce the classical theory of building heating. This allows the establishment of theoretical relations between gas consumption time series and the outside air temperature for different types of buildings, residential and industrial. These relations imply dierent auto-correlations of gas usage time series as well as different cross-correlations between gas consumption and temperature time series for different types of buildings. Therefore, the autocorrelation and the cross-correlation were used to classify the buildings into three classes: housing, housing with high thermal capacity, and industry. The Hurst exponent was calculated using the global DFA to investigate auto-correlation, while the Kendall's τ rank coeficient was calculated to investigate cross-correlation.

Abstract

We present a novel quantum algorithm for the classification of images. The algorithm is constructed using principal component analysis and von Neuman quantum measurements. In order to apply the algorithm we present a new quantum representation of grayscale images.

Abstract

This paper presents an identification method of pollution inflow directions based on the circular graphs of percentiles of pollution concentrations and the possibilities of applying these graphs to estimation of pollutant emission. Based on these graphs of particulate matter concentration recorded in winter and summer seasons, the inflows of dust from the direction of fly ash landfill have been compared for summer and winter periods. This analysis enables to assess the relation of concentrations of pollution from secondary particulate matter suspension to concentrations of pollution generated by other sources. This paper also argues that the 24-hours concentrations, though commonly used, may prove to be an indicator of minor importance to assess air pollution status. On the one hand, excessive 24-hours concentrations impede the identification of the polluter, on the other hand, concentrations generally within permissible limits may occasionally peak dangerously at some sources. As an example, an existing case and a numerical experiment have been presented.

Abstract

Pyrolysis is often a first step in the incineration process, especially of the hazardous waste. One of examples of such installation is presented in the paper cylindrical pyrolysis chamber, applied in the incineration plant for medical waste. In the chamber the carbonisation of the waste takes place and the products, such as volatiles and carbonisate are burned in the cylindrical combustion chamber surrounding the pyrolysis chamber. Such configuration provides the heat transport from the flue gases to the carbonising material. To model the processes taking place in the pyrolysis chamber the energy and mass balance equations have been defined. The system of equations was solved for the exemplary material, such as wood sawdust, of a known thermophysical properties. Results are presented as diagrams of various parameters inside the two-dimension domain of the chamber.

Abstract

The goal of the presented research works is to prove the following thesis: Does the process of contaminants reduction and effiuent application for arable land fertilization justify the treatment method of waste water from a yeast production facility in soil and plant environment. In order to achieve the above mentioned goal, basically the dynamics of physical and chemical properties change observed for waters, soils and plants irrigated with wastewater from yeast factory has been studied for many years. Part I presented the problems characteristics of production as well as water and wastewater management in the yeast factory, principles and technological effectiveness of the treatment of process wastewater from yeast production in soil - plant environment and impact of irrigation with wastewater on water purity. The research proved that very high biological treatment indices are achieved on the Silesian Yeast Factory fields where process wastewater is utilized i.e. concentration reduction for: BOD5 - 99.3% and COD - 99.7%, - for eutrophic compounds: N,0,.1 - 98.83%, P - 96.25% and K - 99.18%. The obtained percentage of concentration reduction is higher than the standards assumed in the water supply and wastewater discharge consent issued to the factory. The drainage water from the fields irrigated with yeast effluent is of I, II and III class of purity.

Abstract

The studies concerned qualitative and quantitative analysis of seston Rotifera communities of Ślepiotka stream polluted with communal sewages. The samples were also taken from the small, inforest pond confluence with the stream. The studies were carried out from March to November 1999. The water from the pond, which flew down into the stream, had a good influence on the Rotifera communities living there. The stable increase in species diversity, abundance and stability of Rotifera communities of Ślepiotka stream below the inflow was recorded. The physic-chemical analysis confirmed the favorable influence of the pond on Ślepiotka stream water quality.

Abstract

The chemical fundamentals of one variant of the chelate method of combined removal of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from flue gases were described. Special attention was paid for chemical reactions responsible for production of solid wastes. A flow sheet of the technology was presented and the operation of industrial installation of SO2, NOx and dust from combustion gases of two 29 MW, grate boilers each was described. The material balance of the process was made and the quantity of solid wastes produced during 3 weeks test of the technology was presented.

Abstract

The research system of soils for evaluation of the ecological state of farm-land soils in Poland is presented in this paper. Granulometrie composition, pH, organic matter content and the content of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in soils were determined. On the basis of existing criteria (tab. 1) the state of soil pollution with heavy metals for separate provinces and whole country was estimated. The average heavy metal contents (mg/kg) in surface layer of soils in Poland are as follows: Cd-0.21, Cu-6.5, Ni-6.2, Pb-13.6, and Zn-32.4. The farm-land soils of Poland generally contain natural and slightly elevated level of the investigated heavy metals. This allows to produce high quality of agricultural materials appropriate for consumption and feeding of animals.

Abstract

The results of the first (since 1939) investigation of Gliwice Channel have been presented. The concentrations of mobiles and constant forms of heavy metals in the bottom sediments have been given. The changes range was: for chromium 4.8-463.2 mg Cr/kg, for cadmium 0.6-18.2 mg Cd/kg, for lead 4-197 mg Pb/kg, for cupric 6-2152 mg Cu/kg, for manganese 33-1664 mg Mn/kg, for nickel 5-85.2 mg Ni/kg, for zinc 64-2244 mg Zn/kg, for iron 2080-94080 mg Fe/kg. The percent participation of stable forms of chromium decreases during longitude profile of canal whereas participation of mobile forms is increases. The stable and mobile forms of cadmium (Cd) increase. The concentrations of stable and mobile form of lead (Pb) decrease. The percent participation of stable forms of copper (Cu) is high (82- 100%). On total longitude of canal the participation of mobile forms of manganese (Mn) increases, but stable forms have advantage. For nickel (Ni) the stable forms are prevail too (form 55% to 81%). The participation of mobile forms of zinc (Zn) is 18% to 60%. The sharply outlined relationship between metals and organic matter concentrations indicates the significance in the metals transport processes from water to bottom sediments. Consequently, pollution of bottom sediments by heavy metals is the secondary result of organic substances of water enrichment. The relationships between total metals and iron (Fe) concentration points to the role of heavy metals stable amalgamations with amorphous ferric oxides. The cascade character and pulsatory water flow of Gliwice Channel makes the concentrations of heavy metals in bottom sediments successfully decrease in each canal section. At the same time, in each section of the canal gradual increase in metals concentration occurs and the maximum values for all determinated metals are present just before sluices closing sections. The best ecological effect, from the economical point of view, is obtained by bottom sediment removal on the about 1 km sectors over each of the sluice.

Abstract

The results of the first (since 1939) hydrochemical investigations of Gliwice Channel have been presented. The polluted K.lodnica River affects bad water quality of the canal. For example the concentrations of chlorides (Cl), sulfates (S04), sodium (Na), potassium (K), conductivity and dissolved substances quality of water is out of standards. In the case of BOD and COD the water quality is changed from out of classes to II class. pH and oxygen concentration are in I class. Although no salinity waters flow into the canal, the water quality get improved slightly only. The decrease of pollutants concentration is related to theirs dispersion. In the case of water quality the self-purification processes are of secondary importance.

Abstract

In 1999, in comparison to 1979, oxygen conditions in the Przemsza River improved. The maximal concentrations of BOD decreased about 20 times, whereas minimal concentrations from 3 to 10 times. On the basic changes of COD it was found that the quantity of recalcitrant pollutants is the same as 10 years ago, the salinity of water is also the same. The volume of ammonia and nitrites has decreased. The probable cause of decrease of nitrates was the reduction of fertilisers levels in the basin area of the Przemsza River. The suspended solids concentrations in the water are abatemanted. The water quality of the river gets worse along the river, coupe especially near the towns of Mysłowice and Jelen.

Abstract

The goal of the study was to determine the risk posed to soil, groundwater and plants by the application of sewage sludge from a mechanical-biological wastewater treatment plant of nominal capacity of 46 000 m3/d. as fertilizer. Soil samples were collected from an agricultural and vegetable production farm. The leaching experiment was carried out in PCV lizymeters (with percolation water outlet). With respect to the chemistry and biology, the analyzed sludge meets the standards set up for sludge used for agricultural purposes. After 8, 16 and 24 weeks of simulated leaching with atmospheric precipitation, the lecheate from lizymeters showed changes in pH (increasing tendency), electrolytic conductivity (decreasing tendency) as well as slightly lowering content of heavy metals. Heavy metal speciation in sewage sludge showed that they occur in forms of compounds sparingly releasable to the soil solution (fractions III, IV, V). The analysis of sequential chemical extraction carried out in soil with applied sewage sludge, after 24 weeks treatment with simulated atmospheric precipitation doses showed similar heavy metal occurrence tendency as in the case of pure sludge. The total heavy metal content in fractions I-III amounted from 18,6% for Cr to 44,8% for Zn. The remaining content of heavy metals was basically bound with fraction V, which is completely unavailable for plants.

Abstract

Bromate is well known by-product produced by the ozonation of drinking water; the allowed concentration for human consumption has to be regulated to few μg/dm3 ranges. A method using ion chromatography has been developed, which will quantify bromate on this level, even in the presence of high levels of common anions such as chloride, nitrate and sulphate. The present article presents results of study of bromate determination in drinking water by two ion chromatographic methods. First was a direct method according to ISO 15061 with conductivity detector and limit of detection 4,5 μg/dm3. The second was new post-column derivatization reaction to produce tribromide ions, which was detected by UV detector. Limit of determination in this method was 0,5 μg/dm3. Both these methods are suitable to determination of bromate anions, because acceptable contents of bromate in drinking water in UE countries are 10 μg/dm3.

Abstract

The eastern area of Poland is the land of great natural worth both on a country and Europe's scale. This area encompasses the valley of the middle-Bug river that is preserved as the Landscape Park. In this research an attempt was undertaken to assess the heavy metal pollution of the environment in the area of the Landscape Park named ,,The Podlasie Ravine of the Bug River". The level of heavy metals in falling dust, soil, and Dandelion (Taraxacum ojficinale Webb.) was being examined in the five localities, situated in the area of the Park. The research showed that none of the mean permissible standard values of the falling dust, Pb, and Cd were outreached; however, it was observed that the fall of Pb was locally higher in relation to the standard Pb fall values in Janów Podlaski. The concentration level of the elements in the soil equaled the ,,O" degree of heavy metal pollution of the soils. In the circumstances of the reaction soil about pH 6- 7 and low concentrations of the metals in the soil the Cd, Pb elements accumulate in Dandelion in trace quantities. The obtained results indicate that there is no threat whatsoever existing in the shape of the heavy metals in the area of the Landscape Park ,,The Podlasie Ravine of the Bug River".

Abstract

Composting of municipal solid waste with a 1 % addition of pulverized metallic iron, iron oxide(III) and iron sulfide(II) has been carried out. The amounts of iron in the bioavailable forms have been assayed in the composts obtained by means of speciation analysis, and the influence of composting on iron mobility has been evaluated. It has been found that pulverized metallic iron introduced into the waste occurs in the compost in the fractions easily accessible to plants, mainly the carbonate fraction. In the waste contaminated with Fe203 iron remains in the residual fraction, and composting does not practically increase its mobility. Over half of the iron from FeS remains in the waste in the residual fraction however, after composting there was an increased iron concentration in the bioavailable carbonate fraction.

Abstract

The aim of the present work was to analyse the results of investigations on the heavy metals content in the water of the Nakło-Chechło Reservoir. In this study the importance of this element in the characteristic of aquatic environment is stressed. Small content of heavy metals has excluded the possibility of the discharge of municipal and industrial sewage. All of these toxic substance included in water have confirmed that the Nakło- Chechło Reservoir is under strong hydrological and chemical influence of the precipitation and surface run off from the Reservoir basin area.

Abstract

This study includes hydrologie characteristics of the Potok Toszecki basin area and the results of chemical analysis of water quality of the Potok Toszecki. These investigations were carried out in following periods: from March 1993 till May 1994 and from January 1997 till June 1998. The results of investigations on the chemical parameters of water quality were compared with analysis, carried out in 1976. Under the results of this investigations water quality of the Potok Toszecki - a watercourse, which flows to the Pławniowice Reservoir - was defined and essential factors, connected with character of the basin area have been shown. Classification of several parameters was achieved under the official decree of the ministry of environmental protection from November 5th 1991. On the basis of this classification it was found, that the main risk for the Pławniowice Reservoir are biogenie substances and suspension, inflowing to the Reservoir together with the water of the Potok Toszecki. Improvement of the existing situation will be possible only if firm waste-water managements action will be taken.
