 abstract={During the past quarter of a century, the neglected, post-industrial waterfront of New York has been transformed into lively parks, playgrounds, sports facilities and promenades. Bicycle and pedestrian routes have been built along wharfs, opening them to the public, while the banks of the East River have been connected by the local, highly popular ferries. This paper discusses the history, mechanisms and consequences of this process, the foundations of which were a skilful policy of the city authorities and proper use of urban planning tools.},
