Abstract

In Algeria, modern agriculture was introduced in the Saharan region through the implementation of the law n° 83–18 of August 13, 1983, relating to access to agricultural land ownership (Fr. Accession à la Propriété Foncière Agricole (APFA) in French). This law was hugely successful and sparked a real enthusiasm for this type of activity, which resulted in an expansion of agricultural areas at the M’Zab level, similar to that observed in other Saharan regions. Over the past decades, the agricultural area has declined markedly (–0.4%), which was due to multiple causes, including ecological problems, such as urban discharges and the rise in the water level. So far, little research has been done to assess the agricultural situation and irrigation in this region. The objective of this work is to analyse and discuss the constraints and impacts of water and agricultural management on sustainability of the ecosystem in the Saharan environment. This work is based on extensive research, which has been carried out in the M’Zab region on the oasis system and its evolution. It was enriched with dozens of direct surveys, performed among farmers working in agricultural areas. The results show that agricultural development and the sustainability of farms in this region face several technical and social constraints, the most important of which are the workforce-related problems and water management. Several measures have been recommended to be taken not only to preserve the ecosystem but also to give significance to the large investments made by the public authorities.

Abstract

The paper concerns reliability analysis of steel trusses under fire conditions with taking into account randomness of buckling coefficient, modulus of elasticity's and yield strength's reduction factors. To assess the reliability system analysis was employed. The calculations of appropriate standard deviations of random variables were realized in Mathematica program. Two types of trusses were analysed: statically determinate and indeterminate, so respectively serial and mixed system were used. The results, gotten for different levels of coefficients of variation of reduction factors were presented.

Abstract

On September 16, 2019, prof. dr hab. Janusz Haman, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences passed away. The death of the Professor is a great loss not only for the family, but also for the entire national scientific community of agricultural engineering – the discipline of which he was the creator in Poland, and at the same time one of the greatest authority on an international scale. He has worked for almost 20 years at the Central Qualification Committee for Scientific Personnel (formerly CKK) at the Prime Minister’s office. For three terms he was a member of the Main Council of Science and Higher Education and the State Awards Commission. For two terms he was a member of the Science and Technology Council. He was the vice-chairman of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Agriculture for five consecutive terms. He was a member of many scientific councils, including three terms of chairmanship of the IMER Council and OIN PAN. He also actively worked in the TNOiK structure, where he was the president of the Lublin Branch and NOT, being the president of the Lublin Branch of SIMP. In recognition of the great merits for creative activity, in particular for the development of agricultural sciences, Professor Haman was awarded four times with the highest academic dignity, which is an honoris causa doctorate, and also repeatedly decorated by the state authorities: Crosses – Knight's, Officer's and Commander's with the Star of the Order of Rebirth of Poland, Distinguished Teacher PRL, National Education Medal, Copernicus and Oczapowski Medal.
