This paper investigates the possibility of exciting high quality trapped resonant modes on frequency selective surfaces consisting of identical sub-wavelength metallic inclusions (symmetrically split rings) with no structural asymmetry but exhibitting electrical asymmetry. The electrical symmetry is broken by using different dielectric substrates. The existence of such anti-symmetric trapped mode on geometrical symmetric structure is demonstrated through numerical simulation. Numerical results suggest that the high quality factor observed for these resonant modes is achieved via weak coupling between the "trapped modes" and free space which enables the excitation of these modes.

The impact of TBM EPB tunnelling was assessed with respect to the observed values of settlements as the results of extensive monitoring system of the subsoil and ground surface. The aim of the analysis using empirical methods was to determine the real scale of impact and to determine the formula for the asymmetric subsidence trough observed during the passage of two TBMs in quaternary cohesive soils. Based on field measurements, authors propose the polynomial formulation for the depth and shape of the asymmetric subsidence trough prediction over twin tube TBM tunnel.

W niniejszej pracy ukazano koncepcję metody wyrównania sieci geodezyjnych z zastosowaniem szeregów Edgewortha i Zasady Wyboru Alternatywy.

The Polish word ‘niepamięć’ (oblivion) is defined by dictionaries as ‘forgetfulness’, ‘lack of remembrance’. In the last 25–30 years, its meaning has been extended and incorporated into the term ‘niepamięć zbiorowa’ (collective oblivion), which means ‘socially relevant phenomena suppressed from memory and/or not admitted to the collective memory of a community’. The author has analysed the contents of the Polish concept of ‘NIEPAMIĘĆ (zbiorowa)’ and asked whether one could find a lexical equivalent of Polish ‘niepamięć’ in Russian and an equivalent of the concept of ‘NIEPAMIĘĆ’ in Russian mentality. Providing a negative answer to these questions today, the author proposes that, instead of analysing individual words such as ‘niepamięć – забвение (zabveniye)’, one should analyse entire conceptual and lexical fields of memory in Polish and in Russian.

This study presents a method to directly calculate the stator current Fourier spectra in double-cage induction motors to diagnose faults in rotor cages. A circuit model is developed for this purpose, allowing the modelling of any asymmetry in the outer and inner rotor cages. The model extends the conventional model of a cage motor by considering the higher space harmonics generated by the stator windings. The asymmetry of the cages is modelled by growing the resistance of any of the rotor bars. This results in various model equations, to be solved by looking for diagnostic signals. Motor current signature analysis is typically used to diagnose cage motors based on the Fourier spectra of the stator currents during steady-state operation. This study determines these spectra for double cage motors using the harmonic balance method, omitting the transient calculations. The calculation results confirmed the sensitivity of the stator current Fourier spectra as a diagnostic signal to distinguish faults in the outer and inner cages.

The melting and solidification processes of the organic phase change material – lauric acid exposed to air were experi-mentally studied to investigate the heat exchange and its effect on the heat transfer behaviour inside a shell as well as its phase-change characteristics. Lauric acid was placed in spherical shells made of polyvinyl chloride with diameters of 44, 63, and 74 mm. This study was based on analyses of the surface temperature and vertical temperature distribution data inside the shells. We found that the phase change characteristics were strongly related to the dominant heat transfer mech-anism. In this case, melting was dominated by convection, whereas solidification was dominated by conduction. The convection intensity increased as the shell diameter increased. Further analysis revealed the melting and solidification periods. In contrast to latent heat release accompanying solidification, latent heat absorption accompanied by melting does not occur at a constant temperature, although it has a smaller temperature gradient than does sensible heat absorption. Based on the asymmetry between the melting and solidification processes, we discuss various possible strategies by which to control the charging and discharging of the phase change material by restraining the heat transfer rate to optimise its performance as a latent thermal energy storage material.

The occurrence of asymmetric probability distributions is quite common. Phenomena such as salary, number of failures, sound level values, etc. have skewed distributions. In such cases, estimating the mean using the interval method can be inaccurate as it ignores the distribution’s asymmetry. Another method of constructing confidence intervals, which does not require symmetry of distributions, is the method based on Chebyshev’s theorem. However, the intervals thus obtained are symmetrical. The approach proposed in this article uses the concept of Chebyshev’s theorem and semivariances to construct new confidence and uncertainty intervals. The article examines the properties of semivariance-based confidence intervals for long-term noise indicators from acoustic monitoring of the city of Gdansk and compares them with classical confidence intervals. The new uncertainty assessment tool proposed in this article in the form of a semivariance-based uncertainty interval can therefore be the basis for new uncertainty assessment methodology and more effective uncertainty.

This is both a review of previous research and a theoretical paper on altruism. It discusses one of the crucial theories of prosocial involvement: the distinction between endo- and exocentric prosocial motivation depending on the type of internal gratification for the involved individual: satisfaction of the Self vs. improving the circumstances of another person. The relevance and validity of this distinction finds support in early empirical studies. Contemporary findings suggest a more universal regulatory context of this idea, which transcends the domain of altruism and extends to the more general issues of the Self and social perception. In addition, it anticipates a number of cognitive biases consequential to the relationship between endocentric regulation and the Self. The findings support a reinterpretation of the original term “prosocial motivation” and the use of a broader interpretative construct “prosocial orientation”, understood as a complex syndrome of regulation that encompasses the processes of social perception, value judgements, and Self-regulation, both explicit and subliminal.
