Abstract

This article is an attempt to assess the role of arts- and-culture journalism and literature published in Jerzy Giedryc's Kultura as a vehicle of the political programmes espoused by the authors who could be regarded as the magazine's inner circle. An analysis of 637 issues of the monthly, generally known as Paryska Kultura, as it was published from 1947 until 2000 by the Instytut Literacki in Paris, shows that c. 65% of its East and/versus West themed content deals with history and culture, i.e. 1174 items of this kind feature Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus, and 663 items focus on Germany.

Abstract

This article presents the last decade of the Krystyna Cywińska’s journalism, published in the London Nowy Czas [ The New Time] in 2007– 2017. Her journalistic career began in London in 1947: she was a regular contributor to Radio Free Europe, the BBC, the London Dziennik Polski i Dziennik Żołnierza [ The Polish Daily and Soldier’s Daily] and its Sunday supplement Tydzień Polski [ The Polish Weekly]. In the course of fifty years she developed a distinctly personal style of commenting on the social and political realities of the day, especially those affected the lives of the Polish expatriates.

Abstract

This article is a tribute to the work of Stanisław Jarocki, Polish painter and activist who, after settling down in Wilno in 1898, over the following fifteen years wrote multiple articles about the religious heritage of that city and the historical Samogitia (Žemaitija) for the highly respected Warsaw weekly Tygodnik Ilustrowany. His texts with original illustrations are discussed in the historical and artistic contexts of the turn of the 20th century.
