Abstract

The text was created on the basis of interviews with Caltech scholars (Pasadena, USA) in 2018. The talks concerned various contemporary theories of biogenesis and the role of their philosophical premises. The researchers also addressed the issue of popularizing science. The worldview is shaped (and established) by popularizing publications. They also answered the questions how their personal beliefs influenced on research.

Abstract

In order to provide sufficient cooling capacity for working and heading faces of the coal mine, chilled water is often transported a long distance along pipelines in deep mine, which inevitably results in its temperature rising owing to heat transfer through pipe wall and the friction heat for flow resistance. Through theoretical models for temperature increasing of the chilled water were built. It is pointed out that the temperature rising of the chilled water should be considered as a result of the synergy effects of the heat transfer and the friction heat, but theoretical analysis shows that within engineering permitting error range, the temperature increasing can be regarded as the sum caused by heat transfer and fraction heat respectively, and the calculation is simplified. The calculation analysis of the above two methods was made by taking two type of pipe whose diameters are De273 × 7 mm and De377 × 10 mm, with 15 km length in coal mine as an example, which shows that the error between the two methods is not over 0.04°C within the allowable error range. Aims at the commonly used chilled water diameter pipe, it is proposed that if the specific frictional head loss is limited between 100 Pa/m and 400 Pa/m, the proportion of the frictional temperature rising is about 24%~81% of the total, and it will increase with high flow velocity and the thin of the pipe. As a result, the friction temperature rising must not be ignored and should be paid enough attention in calculation of the chilled water temperature rising along pipe.

Abstract

Vibrational stress relief (VSR) treatment as a method of stress relief is currently performed on different alloys and sizes as an appropriate alternative for thermal stress relief (TSR) method. Although many studies have been performed to extend the knowledge about this process, analytical studies in the field of VSR process seems to require wider efforts to introduce the concept more clearly and extensively. In this study, a theoretical model is proposed based on an analytical equation. The proposed equation was modified in terms of required variables including frequency, amplitude, and vibration duration to encompass more practical parameters compared to the previous models. Thus, essential VSR parameters including the number of cycles as a representative of treatment duration, strain rate as a representative of frequency, and the amplitude were embedded in the model to make it comprehensively practical. Experimental tests were also performed and residual stress distribution was measured by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) method for certain points to compare the experimental results with the theoretical output. An acceptable range of conformation was observed between theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract

Systematic attempts to maximise the efficiency of gas turbine units are achieved, among other possibilities, by increasing the temperature at the inlet to the expansion section. This requires additional technological solutions in advanced systems for cooling the blade rows with air extracted from the compressor section. This paper introduces a new mathematical model describing the expansion process of the working medium in the turbine stage with air film cooling. The model includes temperature and pressure losses caused by the mixing of cooling air in the path of hot exhaust gases. The improvement of the accuracy of the expansion process mathematical description, compared with the currently used models, is achieved by introducing an additional empirical coefficient estimating the distribution of the cooling air along the profile of the turbine blade. The new approach to determine the theoretical power of a cooled turbine stage is also presented. The model is based on the application of three conservation laws: mass, energy and momentum. The advantage of the proposed approach is the inclusion of variable thermodynamic parameters of the cooling medium. The results were compared with the simplified models used in the literature: separate Hartsel expansion, mainstream pressure, weighted-average pressure and fully reversible. The proposed model for expansion and the determination of theoretical power allows for accurate modelling of the performance of a cooled turbine stage under varying conditions.

Abstract

The article analyses the issue of the potential development of theoretical thinking in young children. The context for this discussion is found in the cultural and historical development theory of L.S. Vygotsky which constitutes the basis for assumptions regarding the thinking about development and education of children. It highlights the elementary education stage as a very important area of designing „developmental teaching” as understood by Vygotsky. The article emphasizes the role of an adult who builds the scaffolding for the child’s thinking and acting, and establishes the conditions and teaching environment necessary for the performance of a cognitive process directed at the development of theoretical thinking. In the author’s opinion building the foundation for theoretical thinking will be possible when teachers set „the right developmental and educational tasks” for a child who is constructing knowledge.

Abstract

This paper presents a set of concepts aiming at the reconstruction of mechanisms of the development of economic space. These concepts are ordered in the way that consecutive concepts add new pieces of knowledge increasing the degree of cognition of the mechanisms of economic space. This set includes among others: shift from one steady-state to the next steady-states, selforganization and the development out of equilibrium, multiple equilibrium, punctuated equilibrium, innovation in the phase transition, pulsative course of development process, emergence of complex spatial systems, development code of the system of regions.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of theoretical calculations in terms of the G4MP2 composite method for cyprodinil–α-cyclodextrin (C 0@α-CD) and cyprodinil–β-cyclodextrin (C 0@β-CD) systems. Studies also covered analogous systems consisting of the anion (C ) and the cation (C +) of cyprodinil. The geometries of the cyprodinil molecule and ions were optimized on the basis of the DFT theory, using hybrid (B3LYP, PBE0), pure (B97-D) and “meta” (M06-2X) GGA functionals for selected Pople basis sets [6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(2d,p), 6-311++G(2d,2p)] and Dunning basis set (aug-cc-pVDZ). The research results suggest that the affinity of “guest” molecules for “hosts” is relatively low. Theoretical studies of the “guest-host” systems allow to predict the properties of the designed preparations.

Abstract

In the present paper, the excavation of the energetic approach that estimates the fatigue crack initiation life of metal is conducted for H62 brass. The benefit of the energetic approach is the division of the actual applied strain range Δε into two parts, that is, a damage strain range Δεd that induces fatigue damage within the metal, and an undamaged strain range Δεc, which does not produce fatigue damage of the metal and corresponds to theoretical strain fatigue limit. The brightness of this approach is that the undamaged strain range Δεc can be estimated by the fundamental conventional parameters of metal in tensile test. The result indicated that the fatigue crack initiation life of H62 brass can be estimated by this approach successfully.

Abstract

The text is devoted to the reconstruction of Wolniewicz’s philosophical views presented by him in the first volume of his Philosophy and Values. The philosophical tradition to which Wolniewicz admitted allegiance and the results of his analyzes in the field of methodology, philosophy of religion, anthropology and philosophy of politics are discussed. Some methodological problems are raised, such as theoretical criteria (including the semantic criterion) of theoreticity, philosophy as theory, philosophical styles, parapsychology as a pseudo-theory, mystified observation and the rule of rationality. Within philosophy of religion the author analyses Wolniewicz’s thesis that the foundation of religion resides in the fear of death. From anthropological problems, Wolniewicz’s views on relations of anthropology to axiology are presented, as well as the relationship between meliorism and pejorism (with particular emphasis on the so-called epiphany of the devil), abortion and murder, transplantations and ‘(neo)cannibalism.’ Within philosophy of politics the author undertakes to carefully reconstruct Wolniewicz’s attempts to distinguish between such oppositions as democracy and democratism, evolution and revolution, fanaticism and tolerance. Finally the author argues that Wolniewicz was one of the most outstanding contemporary Polish philosophers even though he points to some gaps in his arguments.

Abstract

In this work, the instability damage modes of yield state of a steel tube at the tension side of a rectangular steel tube-confined concrete (RCFST) column under eccentric compression were classified into two types based on the coupling effect of slenderness ratio (λ) and eccentricity ratio (γ). The two types include the unilateral compression yield failure mode with a smaller value of γ and tensile and compressive yield failure modes on both column sides with a larger value of γ. Further, the parametric analyses were performed by employing the finite element (FE) method and the analytical analysis to test 16 groups of RCFST columns by varying the γ value with different λ values. It was observed that the results of the analysis for the mechanical properties like the responses of load-strain ( P-ε) and RCFST column instability modes correlated well with the results obtained in the experiments. Furthermore, the proposed theoretical method could be used to investigate the roles of γ as a controller against the instability in RCFST columns when compared with λ.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study is to investigate the mechanical properties around an underground gas storage cavern in bedded salt rock. Firstly, considering the characteristics of the salt rock formation in China, the mechanical model was simplified into a hollow cylinder, which containing non-salt interlayer. In terms of elastic theory, Love displacement function was developed, and the elastic general solution of stress and deformation components were obtained after determining the undetermined coefficients. Under the same condition, numerical simulation was carried out. The validity of the elastic general solution is verified by comparing to numerical simulation results. Furthermore, Based on the feasible general elastic solution, viscoelastic solution was obtained through Laplace transformation and inverse Laplace transform, which could provide reference for the study on the stability and tightness of underground gas storage carven during operation to some extent.

Abstract

The paper is an introduction to the Historyka’s special issue about “Core Concepts of Historical Thinking.” It presents framework and assumptions which shape a profile and content of the volume. It shows understanding of “knowledge of the past” broader than discipline of history only, as well as the methodological characteristics of such an account. It pays an attention to the link between conceptual thinking and the meaning of subjectivity in the modern humanistic reflection. Discussion about “core concepts of historical thinking” concerns not an allegedly, abstract and static structure of concepts which would rule historical thinking per se, but it is focused on the role of concepts which are shaped in the practices of specific researchers and their interactions with the material analyzed. The paper also situates the discussion in the context of recognized currents and ideas about meaning of concepts in humanities, especially in the methodology of historical research. In conclusion, the circumstances of the volume’s emergence is shown.
