Libri Gedanenses

Description

Libri Gedanenses is a scientific publication of the Gdańsk PAS Library, a journal constituting a forum for the presentation of the collections of the Gdańsk bookery. Issued since 1968, the annual was created by dr Marian Pelczar, a long-standing head of the Library. The scientific activity of the Gdansk PAS Library is directed at the exploration of the Gdansk, Polish, and European world of the book.

Libri Gedanenses presents the achievements both of the employees of the Library and authors from other scientific centres, in line with its profile adopted by its Programme Board. The journal publishes texts in both Polish and English.

Libri Gedanenses is indexed in EBSCO databases.

Abstract

The medieval manuscripts of St. Mary’s Church Library ( Biblioteka Mariacka) are the oldest part of the collections of the Gdansk Library, with some items dating back to the 12th century. In view of their topics and history, they provide a priceless testimony to the history of Pomerania. The value of the manuscripts lies not only in their contents and ornamentation, but also in the fact that they include parchment documents bound by Gdansk bookbinders, which have survived in an excellent condition. The uniqueness of the collection was confirmed by the missal Missale secundum notulam dominorum Teutonicorum (Ms. Mar. F 332) being entered on UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” Polish National Register in 2016.
After 1921, not a single study discussing the provenance of books kept in St. Mary’s Church Library was written. This paper is an attempt to partially fill in the gap – to indicate the scribes and owners of the most valuable manuscripts. Among the latter, special attention should be devoted to clergymen connected with St. Mary’s church: Andreas Slommow, Heinrich Calow, and Johannes Zager, a lawyer Nicolaus Velan, and a scribe Johannes Rasoris from Nidzica.
For the purposes of this article, books kept by the Library were divided into sections: theology, philosophy, law and medicine; manuscripts related to the Teutonic Order were also given a separate section. Such a division may help the readers use the library holdings. The text also discusses the most important wartime losses.

Abstract

Gottfried Schwartz (1716–1777), a Mayor of Gdansk, was a wealthy manufacturer of silver wire, interested in art and science. He gathered precious collections of paintings and scientific instruments. He also collected objects made from porcelain, ivory and bronze and owned one of the most substantial collections of numismatic items in the city. In his testament drawn up in 1776, Schwartz bequeathed to Academic Gymnasium of Gdansk and the Library of the City Council of Gdansk both his numismatic collection, consisting of 3000 coins and medals, and his numismatic book collection including 110 items. The catalogue of this book collection, which is currently kept by Gdansk Library, is reconstructed in this paper. Schwartz’s numismatic books were thematically connected with the contents of the owner’s numismatic collection – the interrelation between the book items and the coin and medal holdings is clearly noticeable. On the basis of information on the contents of the lost collection we may presume that each type of numismatic items corresponded to some studies from the book collection.

Abstract

This paper presents information on printed lists of Gdansk officials, which were published in 1741–1810 under the title Das itzt-lebende Dantzig… and Das jetzt-lebende Dantzig… (as of 1764). The author’s findings indicate that they were not published in 1742, 1745, 1747, 1749–1751, 1753 and 1793–1808. Detailed studies also allowed to determine the price at which these materials were sold, although the number of copies published still remains unknown. The author briefly discusses the contents of Das itzt-lebende Dantzig…, which was each time presented on about 100 pages. Inside, the readers could find the full names of Gdansk mayors, councillors, judges, representatives of the Third Order as well as the city military, religious, and school authorities. The source in question is one of the most important publications allowing supplementation of biographical data of Gdansk citizens living in the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century.

5 The First Community Early Childcare Facilities in Gdansk in the Light of the Statutes of 1870

Abstract

The statutes of the community Association for the Establishment and Maintenance of Early Childcare Facilities ( Verein zur Errichtung und Erhaltung von Klein-Kinder-Bewahr- Anstalten) dating to 1870 underlines the goal behind the activity of the organisation: the provision of appropriate day care to children aged from 2 to 7 years during the time when their unwealthy parents work. In compliance with the guidelines of the authorities of the Association, the staff of the facilities shaped the moral attitudes of the children, educated them, taught them hygiene habits, and provided them with a good start to subsequent stages of their school education by conducting classes. Towards the end of the 1860s, the four Facilities – located in the Old Town (as of 1839), in the Lower Town (as of 1844), in the Old Suburbs (as of 1848) and on the edge of the Main Town (as of 1858) – provided care to about 700 little children. The Association activated the inhabitants of Gdansk – not only the ones actively participating in the work of the organisation, but also the ones providing financial support and support in kind. What should be stressed is the involvement of women in the activity: they were not only members of the Association, but, in line with the 1870 Statutes – which was exceptional in the social realities of the time – could sit on the Governing Council ( Verwaltungs-Rath), and even (in one case) on the Board ( Vorstand).

Abstract

Stanisław Hebanowski (1912–1983) was a well-known theatre director and translator of plays. At the age of 57 years, he moved to Gdansk, which marked the beginning of his most prolific artistic creativity and the period of some of his greatest achievements in the Polish theatre. Hebanowski’s collection of books, which, in the representative part of 4,000 volumes, made its way to the Gdansk Library, reflects its owner’s broad, not only theatrical, interests. Almost all the books are signed and provided with ordering numbers and letter markings indicating their belonging to a particular section – according to the author’s language or the topic of a given item. The provenance of the books is indicated by markings and annotations of their previous owners: apart from gifts and items purchased in second hand and ordinary bookshops in Gdansk, Krakow, Lwow, Poznan and Warsaw, the collection also includes books originating from theatres in Gdansk, Lodz and Poznan, and school libraries in Krakow and Tarnogora, university libraries from Krakow and Poznan, monastery libraries from Kolomyia and Stanislawow, and a public library in Rzeszow, along with ones previously belonging to various individuals. Some of the books from Hebanowski’s library – printed texts of theatre plays – include numerous annotations made by their owner – testimonies to the director’s preparation for the staging of the appropriate drama.

7 The Night of Museums at the Gdansk Library as a Tool of Promotion of the Facility in 2011–2019

Abstract

For the Gdansk Library, participation in the Nights of Museums is an effective way of execution of its didactic and science-promoting goals defined in its mission. The interesting main themes, presentation of the library’s rich collections, as well as the involvement of the organisers and the participating staff members all translated into the success of the nine editions of the event between 2011 and 2019. Their subsequent main themes were: A night with Johannes Hevelius from the treasury of the Gdansk Library, Fashion for books – fashion in books, Horror in the library, The world of the library on one night, Taking a book to further than the horizon, The Library as a Garden, Gedanum domus nostra – Our home – Gdansk, In mari vita tua – In the sea is your life, Genius – on the 500th death anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci. During the past Night of Museums, visitors to the Library were most impressed by the displays in the Reading Room of Historical Collections. Such presentations are sometimes the only opportunity to have a close contact with valuable manuscripts, old printed books, prints, and other special collections, and to hear competent staff members talking about them. Regular attractions of the Night of Museums included displays referring to the theme of the event in the exhibition room and a sale of library publications in the hall of the historical building at ul. Wałowa 15. The subsequent organisers of the project, also in cooperation with other cultural institutions from the Tri-City, each time enriched the programme with fascinating talks, thematic workshops, and even concerts. During the subsequent editions of the Night of Museums, the Gdansk Library hosted an average of 670 visitors, which testifies to the value of this tool of promotion of the library.

Instructions for authors

Information for authors

Decisions on whether any given text shall be published are taken by the Editors of Libri Gedanenses. After receiving positive reviews, they also decide on the placement of submissions in one of the following sections: ‘papers and announcements’, ‘materials’, ‘essays’, or ‘reviews and polemics’. The Editors do not accept materials which are inconsistent with the editorial guidelines and reserve the right to introduce changes and shorten texts, as well as to select illustrations in consultation with Authors. The submitted materials are not returned.
Authors transfer to Gdańsk PAS Library the copyright and related rights to the published texts in all currently known areas of exploitation, including the ones specified in Art. 50 of the Act of 4 February 1994 on Copyright and Related Rights, in particular: copying and reproducing by print or digital technique, putting copies into circulation, and disseminating them in digital form.

Libri Gedanenses does not pay fees to authors. Authors receive one copy of the annual and a digital version of their publication (pdf).

Editorial guidelines

The Editors of Libri Gedanenses kindly ask Authors to comply with the guidelines concerning the preparation and submission of texts and illustrations for publication that are presented below. Authors are required to specify their academic/professional title/degree, current place of work, and their e-mail address – or, if necessary, address for correspondence.
Texts should be prepared in WORD in the RTF format. Papers should not have more than 48,000 characters (spaces inclusive), and reviews no more than 12,000 characters (spaces inclusive). Text formatting: font Times New Roman 12, line spacing 1.5 points; formatting of footnotes: font Times New Roman 10, line spacing 1.5 points. Footnotes and bibliographies should be modelled on the ones published in the journal. An abstract of 800-1200 characters (spaces inclusive) and 5-7 keywords should be provided with every text.
Illustrations should be made in the TIFF format, 600 dpi. Every list of illustrations must contain information on who are the authors of scans/photos and copyright owners.
Texts and illustrations should be submitted in the digital form to libri@bg.pan.pl (or, exceptionally, on a CD/DVD by post to: Libri Gedanenses, PAN Biblioteka Gdańska, 80-858 Gdańsk, ul. Wałowa 15).

The publication ethics of Libri Gedanenses are consistent with the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics https://publicationethics.org/files/Code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors_Mar11.pdf

The Editorial Board evaluates the submitted works in terms of their contents without regard to the authors. All the submitted materials remain confidential. They are only available to editors, reviewers and, in some cases, the editors’ advisors. Reviews are confidential also.

Libri Gedanenses publishes only original texts. The Editors expect authors to maintain scientific reliability and respect publication standards, with particular regard to quoting the results of other authors’ works. It is assumed that authors had read the works they refer to.

All persons who contributed a significant input into the development of the work should be mentioned as co-authors. The first author mentioned should submit the final text to the journal after it has been approved as the version for publication by all other co-authors.

The Editorial Board is entitled to reject the work if it is guilty of plagiarism, if the text has already been published, or if the presented research results turn out to be unreliable due to the author’s conscious activity or their involuntary error.

Peer-review Procedure

Reviewing procedure

Preliminary decisions on the rejection or acceptance of the works submitted for reviewing are taken by the Editorial Board of Libri Gedanenses. The basic evaluation criteria include the consistence of the topic with the journal’s profile, the text’s scientific value, its logical organization and linguistic form. The accepted materials are edited in agreement with the authors.

The papers undergo a double blind review process. Each of them is reviewed by two reviewers selected in a manner excluding a conflict of interests with the author. Reviewers recommend that the reviewed papers be accepted, suggesting the introduction of corrections, or that they be rejected. Reviews are made in writing and are completed with a clear evaluation of a given work under review. It is on their basis that the final decisions are taken by the Editorial Board.

Non-scientific texts – such as reviews, polemics, obituaries and reports – are in principle not reviewed, although they may be referred for a review.
