Abstract

The aim of this paper is to indicate the preliminary conditions that should be met by the concept of extended knowledge. Cognitive artifacts undoubtedly affect human cognition and knowledge. Research on knowledge should therefore take into account significant technological changes. In this paper, I make use of the concept of the Extended Mind, and in epistemological research, I use the reliabilist theories of justification. The effect of this combination is the analysis of the phenomenon of extended knowledge on the examples of extended perception and extended memory. Research conducted in the field of extended epistemology and telepistemology provides a significant support.

Abstract

The free piston linear generator is a new range extender concept for the application in a full electric vehicle. The free piston engine driven linear generators can achieve high efficiency at part and full load which is suitable for the range extender application. This paper presents requirements for designing a linear generator deduced from a basic analysis of a free piston linear generator.

Abstract

Currently, the “Lamarckian dimension” and “Lamarckian mechanisms” are vividly discussed, indicating that they are compatible with Darwinism. However, they require an extension of Modern Synthesis to Extended Evolutionary Synthesis. Both the terms, unfortunately connected to Lamarck, really indicate a group of phenomena which can be symbolized by Jablonka’s wording: “some evolutionary changes are non-random in origin, or even result from instruction.” The Lamarckian mechanisms leading to these evolutionary changes arose, however, in the Darwinian way much earlier. This earlier stage is said too rarely, and the typical understanding of Lamarckism strongly suggests its lack. The term “Lamarckism” was and is understood very differently both at different times and in different national and ideological traditions but usually fraught with a simplified understanding of Lamarck. Most of the controversies in these issues arise from the insufficient precision of the utterance, and this from undervaluation of definition, specification of assumptions and abstract reasoning.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to compare the extended high-frequency (EHF) hearing thresholds (10–16 kHz) in tinnitus and non-tinnitus ears, in a group of 98 patients with unilateral tinnitus and normal hearing at standard audiometric frequencies, in a 0.125–8 kHz range. It was found that a total of 65 patients (66%) had a hearing loss (a threshold shift >20 dB HL) in the EHF range and the EHF hearing loss occurred more frequently in the tinnitus ear than in the non-tinnitus ear. The data also indicate that the EHF thresholds increased with the patient’s age and were in most patients higher in the tinnitus ear than in the non-tinnitus ear.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the cryoprotective effects of egg yolk from different avian species (hen, goose and quail) on post-thaw quality of dog semen. Total motility (TMOT) and progressive motility (PMOT) of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were not significantly differed among the extenders, but were higher in the quail-egg yolk based extender compared with extender containing hen or goose egg yolk. It was found that post-thaw sperm motion parameters, velocity VCL and ALH, were significantly higher in the quail-egg yolk based extender. No marked differences in post-thaw sperm plasma membrane integrity (PMI) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were observed among the extenders. In conclusion, the results of the present study suggest that goose or quail egg yolk is a suitable alternative to hen egg yolk for the cryopreservation of dog semen.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different extenders on the post-thaw (PT) quality of sperm originating from the sperm-rich fraction (SRF) and post-sperm-rich fraction (PSRF) of boar ejaculate. Motility and velocity parameters, analyzed using a computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) system, and membrane integrity parameters were markedly higher in frozen-thawed (FT) spermatozoa of the SRF in both the Belstville Thawing Solution (BTS) and Androhep Plus (AHP) extenders, irrespective of the post-thaw (PT) storage time. Furthermore, reduced cryo-survival was more marked in FT spermatozoa of the PSRF in both extenders following storage for 60 min. It was found that the SRF-stored samples in the AHP extender for 60 min exhibited significantly higher percentages of spermatozoa with total motility, mitochondrial function and acrosome integrity than those stored in the BTS extender. The findings of this study confirm that components of the ejaculate fractions and extender have varying effects on the cryo-survival of boar spermatozoa.

Abstract

The philosophical tradition defines the subject as a reflective being, in principle aware of its agency which makes it capable of making free decisions and taking responsibility for them. Agency, understood in this way, is clearly attributed only to people. However, the technological development of artificial cognitive enhancements and of increasingly autonomous artificial intelligence, that has been taken place in last few decades, casts doubts whether such an approach is not too anthropocentric. This doubt is indicated by some proponents of extending cognitive processes beyond the human brain; they argue for the need of appropriate extension of the subject as well. Moreover, there is an increasing number of proposals attributing agency to artifacts. In the first part of the article, I refer to the two most commonly used philosophical criteria distinguishing the subject of cognition from all information processing systems: being a reflective system, and being the subject of intentional stance. Next, I assess, from such a perspective, the attempts to attribute agency to both one-person extended cognitive systems and artificial systems, such as relatively autonomous computer programs. I argue that the gap between conceptions of the extended subject and the artificial subject, and the standard approach incline toward the usage of the term “agent” designating this phenomenon. The term is already widely used in cognitive science to designate any relatively autonomous information processing system performing a cognitive task. The need of the clear distinction between “the subject” (“subjectivity”) and “the agent” (“agency”) is especially noticeable in Polish, where the difference in meanings of these concepts is not so evident as in English. The awareness of the applying in cognitive science these two different notions of agency prevents against a conceptual misuse which could lead to erroneous explanations and predictions.

Abstract

Evolutionary Developmental Biology (Evo-Devo) is becoming to be popular in psychology, and by certain is even seen as a new biology for psychology (Hofer 2014). In particular, it is about the concept of extended inheritance This concept claims to be (neo-) Lamarckian. According to it inherited is everything that contributes to resemblance across generations and that strongly affects the fitness of the offspring—starting by nuclear genes, by genes expression, maternal care, ecological niche, cultural niche, language, etc. In this paper I analyse the potential of the concept of extended inheritance on the example of transgenerational transmission of attachment style and mentalizing capacity. I present the neuroendocrine mechanism of transmission. Then I show that a) DNA methylation is complementary to neuroendocrine mechanism, but it does not revolutionize the latter as it is claimed; b) the concept of extended inheritance confounds the three questions rightly separated by Neo-Darwinism: origin of variation, fate of variation and inheritance, c) although the motivation of Evo-Devo goes against the alleged genetic determinism of neodarwinism, the concept of transgeneration inheritance is determinist (although it is an epigeneetic determinism).

Abstract

A new type of non-inflatable metal tire is designed to prevent the flat tire caused by puncture and shrapnel penetration, and it can be used on star rovers and military or civilian wheeled vehicles. In order to study vibration damping characteristics of the new wheel, a specimen with the same size as the pneumatic tire (235/70 R16) is made for contrast tests. A filtering method is proposed to reduce impulse and random interference noise in collected vibration signal. Comparative analysis of ride comfort performance is conducted by solving weighted acceleration root mean square (RMS) values. The results show that the filtering method has a good effect, and ride comfort of the metal tire is slightly worse, while it has a better grasping ability. Therefore, some extended structures have been recommended to improve the vibration damping performance.

Abstract

This paper is a continuation of part I – Theory and verification and presents some examples of application of the Extended Force Density Method. This method allows for form-finding of cable nets under self-weight and is based on the catenary cable element which assures high accuracy of the results and enables solving wide range of problems. Some essentials of the method are highlighted in this article. A computer program UC-Form was developed in order to perform the calculations and graphically present the results. Main advantages and features of the program are presented in this paper. Subsequently the program is used to perform calculations for a few practical examples with taut and slack cables. Input data is provided in order to enable reproducing calculations by other researchers. The outcomes are shown in the paper and prove that EFDM is an efficient tool for analysis of behaviour of cable nets under self-weight in different configurations.

Abstract

This paper presents the Extended Force Density Method which allows for form-finding of cable nets under self-weight. Formulation of the method is based on the curved catenary cable element which assures high accuracy of the results and enables solving wide range of problems. Essential rules of the Force Density Method (FDM) are summarized in the paper. Some well-known formula describing behaviour of a catenary cable element under self-weight are given.Next the improved variant ofFDMwith all the theoretical and numerical details is introduced. Iterative procedure for solving nonlinear equations is described. Finally a simple verification example proves correctness of methods assumptions. Two further analyses of parameters crucial for correct use of Extended Force Density Method (EFDM) are presented in order to indicate their initial values for other numerical examples. Accuracy of the results are also investigated. A computer program UC-Form was developed in order to perform the calculations and graphically present the results. Some examples of use of EFDM are presented in details in Part II – Examples of application.

Abstract

The authors report two approaches, the first based on growth of lattice matched InGaAs/GaAsSb superlattice on InP substrate with tunable bandgap in the 2 to 3 µm range. The second approach is based on bulk random alloy InGaAsSb, which is tunable from 1.7 µm to 4.5 µm and lattice matched to the GaSb lattice constant. In each case, detector structures were fabricated and characterised. The authors have assessed the performance of these materials relative to commercially available extended short wave infrared devices through comparison to IGA-Rule 17 dark current performance level. A complementary barrier structure used in the InGaAsSb design showed improved quantum efficiency. The materials compare favourably to commercial technology and present additional options to address the challenging extended short wave infrared spectral band.

Abstract

This paper presents a concept of humanoid robot motion generation using the dedicated simplified dynamic model of the robot (Extended Cart-Table model). Humanoid robot gait with equal steps length is considered. Motion pattern is obtained here with use of Preview Control method. Motion trajectories are first obtained in simulations (off-line) and then they are verified on a test-bed. Tests performed using the real robot confirmed the correctness of the method. Robot completed a set of steps without losing its balance.

Abstract

This paper presents a robust control technique for small-scale unmanned helicopters to track predefined trajectories (velocities and heading) in the presence of bounded external disturbances. The controller design is based on the linearized state-space model of the helicopter. The multivariable dynamics of the helicopter is divided into two subsystems, longitudinallateral and heading-heave dynamics respectively. There is no strong coupling between these two subsystems and independent controllers are designed for each subsystem. The external disturbances and model mismatch in the longitudinal-lateral subsystem are present in all (matched and mismatched) channels. This model mismatch and external disturbances are estimated as lumped disturbances using extended disturbance observer and an extended disturbance observer based sliding mode controller is designed for it to counter the effect of these disturbances. In the case of heading-heave subsystem, external disturbances and model mismatch only occur in matched channels so a second order sliding mode controller is designed for it as it is insensitive to matched uncertainties. The control performance is successfully tested in Simulink.

Abstract

This brief note focuses on a simple fluid, i.e., a homogeneous, chemically inert, and electrically neutral fluid, for which, in the linear nonequilibrium regime, the thermodynamic state is expressed by a relation between pressure, temperature, and density. The approach based on the elementary scales is used to check the validity range of both the classical irreversible thermodynamics and the extended irreversible thermodynamics. The achieved result reveals that the classical irreversible thermodynamics fails in providing an adequate response when the mechanical solicitations exceed limit values.

Abstract

In this paper, an analysis of the properties of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) 8/6 in an extended constant power range is presented. The typical constant power range to constant torque range ratio is between 2 and 3. In the case of machines designed as an electric vehicle drive, it is important to maximize this ratio. In the case of an SRM, it is possible to achieve this by applying an appropriate control strategy. An analysis of the SRM operation utilizing a modified control algorithm allows control of the maximum value of the motor phase current. As a consequence, using the so-called nonzero initial conditions for the current and flux allows the output power to be maintained in a wide speed range. For the improvement of drive system efficiency, the work of the phase current regulator should be limited to a minimum. The most advantageous work conditions we obtain with single-time current regulator work. Laboratory verification has been performed for selected states of motor work.

Abstract

In this paper an application of extended Kalman filter (EKF) for estimation and attenuation of periodic disturbance in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive is investigated. Most types of disturbances present into PMSM drive were discussed and described. The mathematical model of the plant is presented. Detailed information about the design process of the disturbance estimator was introduced. A state feedback controller (SFC) with feedforward realizes the regulation and disturbance compensation. The theoretical analysis was supported by experimental tests on the laboratory stand. Both time- and frequency-domain analysis of the estimation results and angular velocity were performed. A significant reduction of velocity ripple has been achieved.

Abstract

It is often spoken and written about the use and benefits of BIM in the design, build, and exploitation phases. Based on an extensive analysis of scientific articles and practice, it has been noticed that, however, there is no comprehensive solution for the use of BIM at the stage of preparation for construction. And there is no relevant approach to the organization of construction though various software offers availability to calculate separate processes that are important for the organization of it. For example, based on the BIM model, determine the optimal place for the tower crane. But the problem is that such a local solution does not represent a comprehensive approach and does not represent apprehensive construction planning. It means, currently there is no method of planning, which will answer the questions: whether to choose a tower crane or a truck crane, where is the optimal place for unloading construction materials, considering the location of the crane, etc. Therefore, this article presents the vision and strategy of BIM development at the construction stage. The problem that should be solved now is the creation the strategy that will allow to improve the efficiency of construction works, adjusting them to the current situation in an optimal way. Therefore, the aim of the article is to combine separate ideas of BIM using in construction management as a whole and call scientists to discuss and supplement the topics of using BIM in construction management.
