Abstract

Evaluation of palatability of 20 plant species as a food source for slugs Deroceras reticulatum (Mi.iller), Arion lusitanicus (Mabille) and Arion ruf us (Linnaeus) was performed under laboratory conditions in tests with multiple choices and without choice. Rate and degree of damage of seedlings and leaves of matured plants of herbs and winter oilseed rape were calculated. Based on conducted experiments, plant species preferred and rejected by particular slug species were defined. Plants that were preferred by all examined slug species were the following: Brassica napus, Conium maculatum and Lamium amplexicaule. Rejected plants were Polygonum nodosum and Plantago lanceolata. Slugs have showed differentiated preferences towards the remaining plant species.

Abstract

Water reservoirs are very valuable floristic sites in Poland. Among them, the most im-portant for preservation of biodiversity of flora are fishponds. The long-term process of human pressure on habitats of this type caused disturbance of their biological balance. Changes in the water regime, industrial development and chemisation of agriculture, especially in the period of last two centuries, led to systematic disappearance of localities of many plant species and plant communities. Gnaphalio uliginosi-Eleocharitetum acicularis Passarge 1999, of Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class Br.-Bl. et Tx. 1943, was firstly described in Germany. This association grows on sandy or sandy-gravely banks of rivers and in old river beds. In Poland, Gnaphalio uliginosi-Eleocharitetum acicularis has not been found so far. The patches of this type have been described many times, but otherwise classified acording to syntakxonomical system. During current vegetation research the association Gnaphalio uliginosi-Eleocharitetum acicularis was found in seven fish-breeding ponds in south-western Poland. Fieldworks were conducted in 2000–2016.

Abstract

Studies on palatability of some commom weed species, herbaceous plants and oilseed rape to D. reticulatum, A. lusitanicus and A. rufus slugs have been carried out under laboratory conditions. In food choice trials the rate and degree of damage to seedlings and leaf disks were determined for 20 plant species. The conducted experiments have also permitted to establish, which plant species were preferred or were not accepted by particular slug species. It was found that the studied slug species preferred seedlings and leaves of Brassica napus and Papaver rhoeas, but showed no preference for Epilobium hirsutum, Geranium sanguineum and Saponaria officinalis plants. As to the remaining plant species under study, the preferences exhibited by particular slug species were quite diverse.

Abstract

Ascorbic acid is a well-known antioxidant found in plants. The content of ascorbic acid was assayed using a normal phase European Pharmacopoeia HPLC method for ascorbic acid in medicinal products. The content of ascorbic acid in herbs was calculated in % for absolutely dry drug. Ascorbic acid was not detected in the roots of Primula ueris, in aerial parts it was detected in flowers (0.43 +/- 0.034%), in blades (1.43 +/- 0.11%) and petioles (1.56 +/- 0.12%). In fresh leaves collected at weekly intervals the content of ascorbic acid varied from 1.19 to 2.39%, being highest from mid-May to mid-June. The fresh leaves contained 2.35 +/- 0.18% of ascorbic acid and when frozen its content was quite stable for one year. The content of ascorbic acid in dried leaves decreased more than ten times in three months, in twelve months it was less than 1/20th of the initial level. Compared to the analyzed common fresh fruits and salads (n = 10) the fresh leaves of common cowslip contained considerably more ascorbic acid. Commercial orange juices could be recommended as the most convenient source of ascorbic acid (8.6-50.4 mg/100 ml); 1-5 glasses of orange juice could fulfill the recommended daily intake of vitamin C (60 mg).

Abstract

The next three issues of the second volume “Plants” of the “Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols”, published in Lublin under the editorship of prof. E. Bartminsky, are devoted to the topics"Herbs","Fruit and coniferous trees",-"Deciduous trees". Like the previous issues, they are a valuable contribution to the study of Polish and Slavic folk culture, as well as to the development of such a complex discipline as ethnobotany. They also provide rich material for linguistic studies of Polish and Slavic phytonymy, since they contain a rich dialect corpus of plant names and related ethnographic and folklore contexts. But the important thing is that the Lublin dictionary gives researchers a new method of ethnolinguistic lexicography, which can be successfully applied to the study of other Slavic and non‑Slavic languages and cultural traditions.
