Abstract

In the paper flow dynamic similarity criteria have been presented to reflect the macroscopic flow pattern in the combustion chamber of large-scale circulating fluidised bed boilers. The proposed scaling rules have been verified on two cold models of CFB boilers operating in Tauron Wytwarzanie S.A. - El. Lagisza division (scale factor 1/20) and Fortum Power and Heat Poland Sp. z o. o. Czestochowa division (scale factor 1/10) – working with the power of 966 MWth and 120 MWth, respectively. As follows from the results of measurements, regardless of CFB boiler’s geometry the use of a defined set of criterial numbers allows to obtain satisfactory agreement between the suspension density distributions registered in the CFB boilers and scaling models.

Abstract

Avatars are virtual representations of virtual world users. Creating a virtual representation can be considered an important element of the self-esteem formation process in modern adolescents. As previous research suggests, the similarity level between an avatar and its creator is related to the latter’s self-esteem. However, previous studies were limited by small and unrepresentative samples, which creates difficulties in generalizing the results. Moreover the studies usually did not include adolescents. This study aims to investigate possible predictors of adolescent–avatar similarity (AAS), in particular global self-esteem, which develops in adolescence. In addition to self-esteem, the importance of personality and gender was also examined. 130 high school students played the Characterium computer game, which was designed for this project. The participants also completed measures of global self-esteem and personality and explained why they had created such avatars. In order to test the research hypotheses, hierarchical regression analyses were performed. No relationship was found between adolescents’ global self-esteem and AAS; however extraversion and gender were significant predictors of adolescent–avatar similarity. Due to the limited number of studies in adolescents, we discuss our results based on the results of adults. The lack of verification of the first hypothesis may be due to the fact that adolescents use avatars to experiment with their own identity, regardless of their self-esteem. This suggests that they use avatars for a different purpose than adults (who want to boost their self-esteem). We discuss gender and personality results in terms of gender and personalty differences in (adult) players. Additionally we propose a hypothesis of cognitive overload (for adolescent extroverts).

Abstract

A particular element of computer games which significantly affects the gaming experience is avatars, i.e., representations of virtual players. In particular player-avatar similarity is related to the game experience, however, the results of previous studies are not conclusive. There is also a lack of research in which participants actually create their own avatars. The first aim of this study is to check whether there is a relationship between the player-avatar similarity and the game experience: game efficacy, game enjoyment and immersion. As a second goal the study examines gender as the mechanism responsible for the relationship between avatar player-similarity and game experience: game enjoyment, game efficacy and immersion. In the study (N = 130) participants created their avatars, played designed computer game Characterium and assessed their experience. The results demonstrate that player-avatar similarity was positively related to immersion level (but not to game efficacy and game enjoyment). Gender was not a significant moderator of the relationships between avatar similarity and game efficacy, game enjoyment and immersion. We consider this study to be a step forward in better understanding the mechanisms underlying the relationship between player-avatar similarity and game experience. For the first time, the relationship between player-avatar similarity and immersion was demonstrated in the condition of creating an avatar by the subjects and controlling it in the game. We also identify potential reasons why our hypotheses have not been confirmed.

Abstract

Each European Union Member State keeps a register of data on properties located in its territory. The number, type and scope of these properties are determined by each Member State’s needs. The INSPIRE Directive enables the scope of data to be harmonised, and the data to be made available for the purpose of assisting legislators in taking decisions and actions likely to have either direct or indirect impact on the environment. The aim of the study was to indicate the basic differences between the data contained in Polish and Latvian cadastres. Unlike other similar studies analysing the content of data in the cadastre, this article pays special attention to the number of available sets of data about the parcel and its surroundings, the ease of access to these data and the possibility for acquiring them by an interested party without incurring additional fees. This is particularly important in activities related to spatial management and the development of an information society. The results show that in both countries, the decision makers have approached the INSPIRE Directive differently. Direct analyses conducted for the cities of Wrocław (Poland) and Riga (Latvia) demonstrated that the information system in Wrocław contains a considerably greater scope of information available free of charge, is easier to use and offers more services. The Latvian Republic’s spatial information system provides a less-developed scope of information about real estate (without fees) that is dispersed on several websites, which slows down and hinders its use.

Abstract

The paper approaches an important issue of the phonological similarity of words, relevant for current research in phonotactics, word recognition, production and acquisition, by analyzing the data collected in an experiment in which 30 native speakers of Polish were asked to provide phonologically similar words to 80 nonwords. The study demonstrates that the uncovered patterns of phonological similarity (segment substitutions, deletions and additions, the use of bigrams, trigrams and quadrigrams, noncontiguous sounds and segment metathesis) go beyond the commonly employed concept of neighbourhood density and point to the need to revise the current approaches to phonological similarity of words. It is argued that the experimental results can be attributed to the considerably more complex phonotactic and morphological structure of Polish than English.

Abstract

This article intends to justify the gap in the research of similarity coefficient driven approaches

and cell formation problems (CFP) based on ratio data in cellular manufacturing systems

(CMS). The actual implication of ratio data was vaguely addressed in past literature, which

has been corrected recently. This research considered that newly projected CFP based on

ration data. This study further revealed the lack of interest of researchers in investigation for

an appropriate and improved similarity coefficient primarily for CFP based on ratio data.

For that matter a novel similarity coefficient named as Generalized Utilization-based Similarity

Coefficient (GUSC) is introduced, which scientifically handles ratio data. Thereafter

a two-stage cell formation technique is adopted. First, the proposed GUSC based method

is employed to obtained efficient machine cells. Second, a novel part allocating heuristic is

proposed to obtain effective part families. This proposed approach is successfully verified on

the test problems and compared with algorithms based on another similarity coefficient and

a recent metaheuristic. The proposed method is shown to obtain 66.67% improved solutions.

Abstract

Different temperature sensors show different measurement values when excited by the same dynamic temperature source. Therefore, a method is needed to determine the difference between dynamic temperature measurements. This paper proposes a novelty approach to treating dynamic temperature measurements over a period of time as a temperature time series, and derives the formula for the distance between the measurement values using uniformsampling within the time series analysis. The similarity is defined in terms of distance to measure the difference. The distance measures were studied on the analog measurement datasets. The results show that the discrete Fréchet distance has stronger robustness and higher sensitivity. The two methods have also been applied to an experimental dataset. The experimental results also confirm that the discrete Fréchet distance performs better.

Abstract

A similarity solution for conduction dominated solidification of a dilute binary isomorphous alloy has been developed. The effect solidification due to density change during phase transformation has been highlighted and investigated in detail. The governing equations for solid, liquid and mushy phase has been proposed, taking into account the effect of shrinkage or expansion due to density change during phase change. The thermo-physical properties (thermal conductivity and specific heat), equilibrium temperature and phase fraction are evaluated within the mushy zone using averaging technique. The effect of equilibrium and non-equilibrium solidification is investigated using Lever and Scheil’s rule models respectively. In addition, the effect of boundary and initial temperature on solidification behavior of the alloy is also addressed. It has been observed that the interface (liquidus and solidus) moves faster with increase in density ratio and decrease in boundary and initial temperature. No major changes in temperature distribution and interface position has been observed with variation partition coefficient and microscale behavior model (Lever rule and Scheil’s rule).

Abstract

The work concerns dynamic similarity criteria of various phenomena occurring in hydraulics and fluid dynamics originally derived from ratios of forces and forces moments affecting these phenomena. The base of dynamic similarity criteria formulations and considerations is A. Flaga’s method and procedure for determining dynamic similarity criteria in different issues of fluid–solid interactions i.e. at different fluid–solid relative motions. The paper concerns the determination and analysis of dynamic similarity criteria for various practical problems encountered mainly in hydraulics and fluid dynamics at steady, smooth fluid onflow in front of a solid. Moreover, the cases of mechanically induced vibrations of a body in a stationary fluid moving with constant velocity in front of the body have been presented. Assuming authorial method and procedure for determining dynamic similarity criteria, its have been presented and analysed in the paper both well known similarity numbers obtained in another way (e.g. from dimensional analysis or differential equations for particular problems – as Reynolds, Froude, Euler, Cauchy, Strouhal, Mach numbers) – as well as several new similarity numbers encountered in different fluid solid interaction problems (e.g. new forces and moments coefficients encountered in problems of vibrating solid bodies in fluids).

Abstract

Dratów, Krzczeń and Tomaszne lakes are linked by means of Wieprz-Krzna Canal. On the other hand, Bikcze, Mytycze and Plotycze lakes are not included in the water system of Wieprz-Krzna Canal. However, all these lakes are regarded as biologically valuable water reser-voirs forming Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lakeland. They are shallow eutrophic lakes with varied water surface, different catchment area and diversified structure of catchment management. The qualitative and quantitative composition of planktonic rotifers was studied in spring, summer and autumn of 2012 and 2013. The studies revealed the presence of 67 Rotifera species with their mean density ranging from 119 ind. dm-3 in Tomaszne lake to 1441 ind. dm-3 in Bikcze lake. Dominants included few very common species of Brachionus angularis, Keratella cochlearis, Keratella cochlearis tecta, Keratella quadrata, Polyartchra vulgaris. Dominance structure and species diversity suggest a slightly higher ecological status of Mytycze lake, as compared to the remaining eutrophic reservoirs. Faunistic differences observed among rotifer assemblages inhabiting individual lakes were significantly bigger than those registered in the successive study years within the area of individual lakes. This property referred to all the reservoirs, both the ones linked with the water system of the canal and the lakes not included in the canal system. Bigger faunistic differences occurred among rotifer assemblages inhabiting the lakes of Wieprz-Krzna Canal sys-tem, as compared with the assemblages found in the lakes not included in the system.

Abstract

Dratów, Krzczeń and Tomaszne lakes are among environmentally valuable reservoirs in Poland and Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lakeland. These are shallow eutrophic reservoirs of varied water surface. What they have in common is the fact that they are linked by Wieprz-Krzna Canal. The main aim of the present study was to determine the degree of faunistic similarity between planktonic rorifer assemblages inhabiting these particular lakes. The authors were interested to find out whether linking the lakes with the canal, as well as currently applied water exchange could affect the degree of faunistic similarity occurring between these lakes. Physical and chemi-cal analyses, as well as the studies of planktonic rotifers were carried out in the spring, summer and autumn of 2012 and 2013. They included determining the qualitative composition and the density of planktonic rotifers. The studies resulted in finding 50 species of Rotifera, with mean density ranging from 75 to 855 ind. dm-3. The dominants included the common species of Keratel-la cochlearis, Keratella cochlearis tecta, Keratella quadrata, Polyarthra vulgaris, Kellicottia longispina, Brachionus angularis, Ascomorpha odalis and Synchaeta pectinata. The results re-vealed high faunistic similarity among rotifer assemblages inhabiting a particular lake in different years, and high diversification occurring between the lakes compared in the work. The analyses showed that linking the lakes by Wieprz-Krzna Canal did not significantly affect the faunistic similarity of these particular lakes.

Abstract

The use of virtual reality (VR) has been exponentially increasing and due to that many researchers have started to work on developing new VR based social media. For this purpose it is important to have an avatar of the user which look like them to be easily generated by the devices which are accessible, such as mobile phones. In this paper, we propose a novel method of recreating a 3D human face model captured with a phone camera image or video data. The method focuses more on model shape than texture in order to make the face recognizable. We detect 68 facial feature points and use them to separate a face into four regions. For each area the best fitting models are found and are further morphed combined to find the best fitting models for each area. These are then combined and further morphed in order to restore the original facial proportions. We also present a method of texturing the resulting model, where the aforementioned feature points are used to generate a texture for the resulting model.

Abstract

Isozyme, RAPD and AFLP markers were evaluated and compared for their ability to determine genetic similarity in a set of 18 parental lines of winter oilseed rape F<sub>1</sub> hybrids developed using CMS ogura. Five isozyme systems, 64 RAPD starters and 23 EcoRI+3/MseI+3 AFLP primer combinations generated 597 polymorphic markers. These polymorphic fragments were chosen for estimation of genetic similarity. Of the total number of polymorphic products, polymorphic zymograms constituted only 3.0% of the markers, 57 RAPD primers 37.7%, and 23 AFLP primer combinations 59.3%. The size of RAPD polymorphic products ranged from 564 to 2100 bp. On average there were four amplified bands per primer, with 61.0% polymorphism. The AFLP polymorphic fragments ranged from 72 to 1352 bp in size. AFLP assays generated 15 bands per primer pair on average and detected roughly four times more bands than with RAPD analysis. The genetic similarity coefficients based on all marker data range from 0.52 to 0.84. The correlation of genetic similarities based on RAPD and AFLP markers was 0.58. Estimated genetic similarity based on isozyme data was not correlated with genetic similarity derived from the two DNA-based markers. The dendrogram constructed with the three types of markers taken together grouped all the winter oilseed rape parental lines into several similar clusters. The genomic distribution and frequency of the RAPD and AFLP markers can serve well as estimators of genetic similarity between parental lines of F<sub>1</sub> CMS ogura hybrids

Abstract

The construction process of the tunnel ground deformation regularity of surrounding rock, stability, deformation control of tunnel surface based on the requirements, combined with the characteristics of shallow tunnel with large-span. Used three-dimensional numerical simulation software, established a dynamic tunnel analysis program to simulate the construction process of center cross-diagram method and double sidewall drift method. Based on the stratum deformation, supporting force and analysis of plastic zone distribution, comparative analysis of engineering adaptability of different construction methods from the construction process and construction mechanics, get optimization tunnel construction scheme.

Abstract

With the rise of coal mine underground reservoir engineering in the Shendong Mining Area, the space time dynamic evolution prediction of storage coefficient is becoming one of the critical technical problems for long-term reservoir operation. This coefficient directly determines the storage capacity and the comprehensive benefits of the operation of a coal mine underground reservoir. To this end, the proposed underground reservoir in Daliuta coal mine (No. 22616 working face) is selected in this study for the development and application of an experimental device to measure the storage coefficient. Rock and coal fragments from similar materials are prepared, which are filled and loaded according to the caving rock nature as well as the lumpiness and accumulation mode characteristics pertaining to No. 22616 working face. Subsequently, the measured storage coefficient under circulating water injection conditions revealed a four-dimensional spatial and temporal pattern. It followed the law of storage coefficient under joint interaction of water-rock and stress. The results showed that, prior to the experiment, rock and coal fragments made from similar materials had good water resistance when the paraffin content was set at 8%. The three stress zones were defined based on a theoretical analysis, which were applied on the corresponding loads. During the experiments, significant regional differences were found in the top surface with persisting subsidence of each stress loading zone. Hence, compared with its initial state, the maximum subsidence in the stress stability zone, the stress recovery zone, and the low-stress zone was 7.89, 5.8, and 1.83 mm, respectively. While the storage capacity and the storage coefficient gradually decreased, the former ranged from 0.2429 to 0.2397 m3, and the latter ranged from 0.270 to 0.266. The experimental results are verified by drainage engineering tests in the Shendong Mining Area. In essence, the storage coefficient had remarkable spatial distribution characteristics and a time-varying effect. In space, the storage coefficient increased with height along the vertical direction of the coal mine underground reservoir. However, it decreased with the distance from the boundary of the dam body in the horizontal direction. With time, the storage coefficient decreased dynamically. This study provides a new way of predicting the storage coefficient of a coal mine underground reservoir.

Abstract

Successful mine planning is necessary for the sustainability of mining activities. Since this process depends on many criteria, it can be considered a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. In this study, an integrated MCDM method based on the combination of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for order of preference by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) is proposed to select the optimum mine planning in open-pit mines. To prove the applicability of the proposed method, a case study was carried out. Firstly, a decision-making group was created, which consists of mining, geology, planning engineers, investors, and operators. As a result of studies performed by this group, four main criteria, thirteen sub-criteria, and nine mine planning alternatives were determined. Then, AHP was applied to determine the relative weights of evaluation criteria, and TOPSIS was performed to rank the mine planning alternatives. Among the alternatives evaluated, the alternative with the highest net present value was selected as the optimum mine planning alternative. It has been determined that the proposed integrated AHP-TOPSIS method can significantly assist decision-makers in the process of deciding which of the few mine planning alternatives should be implemented in open-pit mines.

Abstract

We analyze the Google-Apple exposure notification mechanism designed by the Apple-Google consortium and deployed on a large number of Corona-warn apps. At the time of designing it, the most important issue was time-to-market and strict compliance with the privacy protection rules of GDPR. This resulted in a plain but elegant scheme with a high level of privacy protection. In this paper we go into details and propose some extensions of the original design addressing practical issues. Firstly, we point to the danger of a malicious cryptographic random number generator (CRNG) and resulting possibility of unrestricted user tracing. We propose an update that enables verification of unlinkability of pseudonymous identifiers directly by the user. Secondly, we show how to solve the problem of verifying the “same household” situation justifying exempts from distancing rules. We present a solution with MIN-sketches based on rolling proximity identifiers from the Apple-Google scheme. Thirdly, we examine the strategies for revealing temporary exposure keys. We have detected some unexpected phenomena regarding the number of keys for unbalanced binary trees of a small size. These observations may be used in case that the size of the lists of diagnosis keys has to be optimized.

Abstract

In this present work, the laminar free convection boundary layer flow of a two-dimensional fluid over the vertical flat plate with a uniform surface temperature has been numerically investigated in detail by the similarity solution method. The velocity and temperature profiles were considered similar to all values and their variations are as a function of distance from the leading edge measured along with the plate. By taking into account this thermal boundary condition, the system of governing partial differential equations is reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations. The latter was solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta method of the fourth-order, the solution of which was obtained by using the FORTRAN code on a computer. The numerical analysis resulting from this simulation allows us to derive some prescribed values of various material parameters involved in the problem to which several important results were discussed in depth such as velocity, temperature, and rate of heat transfer. The definitive comparison between the two numerical models showed us an excellent agreement concerning the order of precision of the simulation. Finally, we compared our numerical results with a certain model already treated, which is in the specialized literature.

Abstract

Advancement in medical technology creates some issues related to data transmission as well as storage. In real-time processing, it is too tedious to limit the flow of data as it may reduce the meaningful information too. So, an efficient technique is required to compress the data. This problem arises in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Electrocardiogram (ECG), Electroencephalogram (EEG), and other medical signal processing domains. In this paper, we demonstrate Block Sparse Bayesian Learning (BSBL) based compressive sensing technique on an Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. The efficiency of the algorithm is described using the Mean Square Error (MSE) and Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) value. Apart from this analysis we also use different combinations of sensing matrices too, to demonstrate the effect of sensing matrices on MSE and SSIM value. And here we got that the exponential and chi-square random matrices as a sensing matrix are showing a significant change in the value of MSE and SSIM. So, in real-time body sensor networks, this scheme will contribute a significant reduction in power requirement due to its data compression ability as well as it will reduce the cost and the size of the device used for real-time monitoring.
