Feasibility study for the implementation of solar power plants in the USA

Abstract

The article provides calculations and feasibility study of solar power plants implementation for the states of New Jersey, New Mexico and Michigan. The average cost for grid power, average household kwh use per month and average cost for 6-kw system with 26% federal tax credit applied were taken into account. The approach outlined in this article proposes to take into account changes in the value of money, tariffs and period of service of solar power plant.
The conducted research shows that the construction of SPPs in the USA can be profitable in the conditions of constant growth in prices for electricity produced using traditional energy sources. However, with the stability of electricity prices, the use of solar energy is far from the most profitable investment.
It has been proven that there is a need to focus on the research of the latest energy storage and generation technologies in order to reduce the impact of the instability of renewable energy production on the stability of power grids in the future. Further development of SPPs can help increase their availability and competitiveness, which will contribute to the creation of a sustainable and green energy infrastructure. The development of technologies in this area will also lead to a decrease in installation prices and an increase in the efficiency of the panels.
The main limitation of solar power plants is the need for a large area for the installation of panels in order to achieve the level of industrial electricity production. Therefore, now the centralized production of electricity using the sun is possible only in areas that are unsuitable for life and economic activity.

Abstract

The Author discussed in his article the problem of ethic foundations of promoters of psychohistory. He, argues that psychotherapeutic inclinations of scholars resulted in the alienation of this approach within historical sciences, what - in the end - did not prevent psychohistorians from becoming active outside the closed circle of the discipline.

Abstract

Previous onomastic research into proper names in the Internet has typically been based on traditional and classic onomastic methodology. As a result, researchers have focused on the classification of names, the analysis of their structure, etymology, or function. In this paper, this traditional approach is compared with the new possibilities afforded by medioonomastics, a fast growing method which is combining the onomastic tradition and mediolinguistics. This paper provides only an outline and is only preliminary, although some analysis is also presented. It reviews onomastic techniques and the medioonomastic analysis of the names that function within the various types of texts in the Internet. Some examples are taken from Internet memes, as well as from Facebook profiles. One of these names is the Polish given name, Janusz, which is a brilliant example of the specific new functions, connotations and general semantic values generated by the Internet. This name has gained a new meaning: ‘a typical Polish man’, ‘unfashionable man’, ‘a redneck’. Another name is the title of the Facebook profile Chujowa Pani Domu, based on the TV-series Perfekcyjna Pani Domu, as a kind of semantic and pragmatic re-construction of the latter name. In the conclusion, the necessity of considering not only the type of object-named, but also the medium and especially the Internet, is emphasized. Such studies may offer a correct procedure for analysis which include the new medioonomastic methodology.

Abstract

Computational modeling plays an important role in the methodology of contemporary science. The epistemological role of modeling and simulations leads to questions about a possible use of this method in philosophy. Attempts to use some mathematical tools to formulate philosophical concepts trace back to Spinoza and Newton. Newtonian natural philosophy became an example of successful use of mathematical thinking to describe the fundamental level of nature. Newton’s approach has initiated a new scientific field of research in physics and at the same time his system has become a source of new philosophical considerations about physical reality. According to Michael Heller, some physical theories may be treated as the formalizations of philosophical conceptions. Computational modeling may be an extension of this idea; this is what I would like to present in the article. I also consider computational modeling in philosophy as a source of new philosophical metaphors; this idea has been proposed in David J. Bolter’s conception of defining technology. The consideration leads to the following conclusion: In the methodology of philosophy significant changes have been taking place; the new approach do not make traditional methods obsolete, it is rather a new analytical tools for philosophy and a source of inspiring metaphors.

Abstract

Research project on The Lviv Multicultural Historical Environment in the 19'" and 2(Y• Centuries is realised since 2002 by a group of Polish and Ukrainian historians. Research concentrates on the rich historiographic achievements ofLviv Polish, Ukrainian, German and Jewish historians in the 191h and 20'h centuries. Various contributions discuss the institutional support for historians such as university chairs and seminars at the Lviv University, professional quarterly ,,Kwartalnik Historyczny" and Historical Society.

Abstract

In the search for the critical functions of theology, we can find a growing number of dilemmas, which come from the theology itself and from the modern knowledge about the world, which theology has to face, not only offering expected answers, but also formulating its own Christian doctrine proper for contemporary times and consistent with the Tradition of faith. The only way to present such a broad and difficult problem in a short paper is through a general perspective. The key to the systematization of the problem is by observing that the tasks of theology can be seen from four different perspectives, according to the distinction ad extra – ad intra. Astrong emphasis is put on the encounter between theology and science. The attempt to make predictions about the future is based on analysis of the contemporary situation in theology and on the extrapolation of existing trends for the near future.

Abstract

Starting from the statement that self-reflection is necessary for the development of any scientific discipline, the author of this article—a historian and sociologist—considers the characteristics of research on everyday life. What is the subject of this subdiscipline and when did such research start? What methods does it use? The author reflects on these issues, while referring to his own experience as a historian and to the book by Bogumiła Mateja-Jaworska and Marta Zawodna- -Stephan, Badania życia codziennego. Rozmowy (nie)codzienne w Polsce (2019) [Studies of Everyday Life: (Not) Everyday Conversations in Poland], in which the statements of contemporary everyday researchers are quoted. The author concludes that the beginnings of such research should be sought in the very distant past and that its material might be provided by all the creations of human culture. He also wonders if and how evidence of the modern digital age will survive.

Abstract

Decyzje w polityce społecznej podejmowane z użyciem algorytmów wpływają na jakość życia ludzi na świecie. Niedostępność algorytmów utrudnia ocenę ich wiarygodności. Nie wiadomo, czy modele statystyczne dobrano i zastosowano prawidłowo. Czy dane były wiarygodne? Autorzy podejmują ten ogólniejszy problem na przykładzie jednego z pierwszych algorytmów wdrożonych w Polsce: narzędzia profilowania bezrobotnych. Algorytm miał mierzyć potencjał osób bezrobotnych i na tej podstawie pomóc dzielić je na grupy o zróżnicowanym prawie dostępu do aktywizacji zawodowej. Opierając się na analizie dokumentów urzędowych, uzupełnionych o dane jakościowe i ilościowe, autorzy prześledzili decyzje podejmowane podczas konstrukcji algorytmu i dokonali metaanalizy statystycznej tego narzędzia. W artykule dowodzą, że algorytm profilowania nie spełniał podstawowych standardów metodologicznych: dane o osobach bezrobotnych były nierzetelne, błędnie zastosowano model psychometryczny, nieprawidłowo skonceptualizowano podstawową zmienną, formuły matematycznej nie dostosowywano do wyników analiz, lecz do poczynionych z góry założeń.

Abstract

In the book The Work of Music and the Problem of Its Identity Roman Ingarden presented multi‑sided conception of the work of music. The crucial problems of this book are of ontological character and they concern the ontic category and the essence of the music composition. In the present article, Ingarden’s conception is criticized internally and externally. At first, Ingarden’s conception is analyzed from the point of view of his own assumptions. Then, the very assumptions are revised. Ingarden bases his investigation on the elitist analytic corpus (he considers only outstanding works of Western Music) and employs liberal ontological assumptions (he allows many different categories of objects). With these assumptions in place, Ingarden reaches his solution, namely that the work of music is a schematic, purely intentional object. This seems optimal. The perspective changes, if we go beyond the elitist corpus or accept more restrictive ontological assumptions.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to point out the historical reasons why W.V. Quine’s article Two Dogmas of Empiricism should be read not as an attempt to criticize the characteristic theses of logical positivism, but as an attempt to reject the conceptual analysis based on the unclear concepts such as ‘analytical’, ‘synonymous’ and ‘meaning’. Instead of the conceptual analysis, Quine proposed the methods of explication and paraphrase. These two methods are useful for clarifying and simplifying the conceptual apparatus in which scientific knowledge is formulated.

Abstract

The paper presents the mainstream methodological reflection in the field of art history, shaped by the reception of Karl Popper’s philosophy of critical rationalism from the 1940s to the 1980s. A key role in this process was played by various attempts to respond to the deductive-nomological model of scientific explanation. Referring to Popper’s ideas, Gombrich developed the project of deductive iconology, associated with the conventionalist approach to the principles of image representation and communication. In dialogue with Gombrich’s views, alternative and mutually contradictory versions of the adaptation of the DN model for the methodological explanation of images were put forward by Oskar Bätschmann and Michael Baxandall. Michael Fried and Norman Bryson proposed opposing versions of viewing the image as a form of response to the objective and fundamentally fixed initial conditions of contact with the viewer. The divergence and incommensurability of the methods of art history facing Popper’s methodology revealed the inherent paradox of the notion of fact, on the one hand treated realistically and opposed to theories, and on the other depending on the interpretive perspective and theoretical assumptions.

Abstract

The article is based mainly on the Pontifical Biblical Commission's document Interpretation of the Bible in the Church (1993), but it also refers to The Jewish Peopleand his Holy Scriptures in the Christian Bible (2001). The first part of the article deals with an outline of the history of OT Exegesis, particularly the common heritage of Samaritan, Jewish and Christian faith. The second part describes modern methods and approaches of biblical enquiry.

Abstract

Marc Bloch — one of the most distinguished 20th Century historians – is the author of Strange Defeat: A Statement of Evidence Written in 1940. Serving as a staff offi cer, Bloch witnessed the fall of France in 1940 from the front line. This book is so interesting from the methodological point of view, because we are presented here with a historical source created by a historian, who additionally knows how an ideal type of historical evidence ought to be written. This French historian thought that history is also written to give contemporaries lessons on how to avoid the mistakes of the past. This is an important message of Strange Defeat.

Abstract

The article is an attempt to look at the mediaevalist work of Jacek Banaszkiewicz through the prism of statements of other scholars using the comparative method (including M. Handelsman, M. Małowist, M. Tymowski, K. Modzelewski). The aim is to answer the question of whether there is a set of guidelines that every comparatist should follow. The specific issues discussed here include the role of difference and similarity in comparison, the notions of function, analogy and homology, geographical and chronological limitations of comparative studies, and the role of influence and reception.

Abstract

The paper considers the idea of history as a science of Józef Kazimierz Plebański (1831–1897), the Warsaw historian and Polish student of Leopold von Ranke. In my article, I analyse assignments that Plebański set as history, the place of history in science in general, the problem of objectivity in history, and other major issues related to the study of the past in the thought of Plebański.
