Abstract

The paper analyzes the estimation of the fundamental frequency from the real speech signal which is obtained by recording the speaker in the real acoustic environment modeled by the MP3 method. The estimation was performed by the Picking-Peaks algorithm with implemented parametric cubic convolution (PCC) interpolation. The efficiency of PCC was tested for Catmull-Rom, Greville, and Greville two- parametric kernel. Depending on MSE, a window that gives optimal results was chosen.

Abstract

Decision-making processes, including the ones related to ill-structured problems, are of considerable significance in the area of construction projects. Computer-aided inference under such conditions requires the employment of specific methods and tools (non-algorithmic ones), the best recognized and successfully used in practice represented by expert systems. The knowledge indispensable for such systems to perform inference is most frequently acquired directly from experts (through a dialogue: a domain expert - a knowledge engineer) and from various source documents. Little is known, however, about the possibility of automating knowledge acquisition in this area and as a result, in practice it is scarcely ever used. lt has to be noted that in numerous areas of management more and more attention is paid to the issue of acquiring knowledge from available data. What is known and successfully employed in the practice of aiding the decision-making is the different methods and tools. The paper attempts to select methods for knowledge discovery in data and presents possible ways of representing the acquired knowledge as well as sample tools (including programming ones), allowing for the use of this knowledge in the area under consideration.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mechanisms of classification and discursive representation of the poor and their everyday life, that result in dehumanization and orientalization of their image. Research data (press articles) was analyzed in the framework of theories such as the Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic power, post-colonial studies and discourse theory. The representation of everyday life was analyzed using the theory of real and symbolic localization. The use of the abovementioned theories enabled the author to describe the processes in which the poor are discursively reconstructed as Others. The identity of the “Other” is (falsely) attributed to the poor by localizing them, within the constructed representations of the places they inhabit

Abstract

The article presents a brief exposition of alternative ways of creating virtual objects and the status of their existence inspired by the relevant views of Plato, Aristotle, Franz Brentano and Karl Popper as well as various conceptions of representation. I argue that the present state of research on the problem of “computer” virtuality shows that it is necessary to explore first the ontological issues of virtual objects. Only these issues will solve the mystery of the creation and existence of virtual objects. The consideration of these issues are suppressed by the fact that contemporary philosophy has removed both metaphysics and, with-it, ontology. That is why, and for reasons for reasons of substantive accuracy, I show how traditional ontological and ontologically inspiring approaches are—when modified— promising candidates for exploring the nature of virtual objects, first of all, problems of their existence and creation.

Abstract

The sports landscape is constantly changing due to innovation and entrepreneurship. The availability of technology led to the emergence of esports and augmented sports. Biofeedback and sensing technologies can be used for athlete monitoring and training purposes. Research on motor control deals with planning and execution of bodily movements and provides some insights towards formal presentation of sports.
Previous research provided many sports categorization models. On many occasions, published articles did not distinguish competitive gameplay activities (gaming) from athletic performance (esports). Our goal was to define esports by extending existing universal sport definitions and propose a novel modular computational framework for categorizing sports through environments and signals.
We have fulfilled our goals by illustrating how signals flow within competitive (sports) environments. Our esports definition introduces esports as a group of sports similar to motorsports. Moreover, we have defined mathematical foundations for signal processing by various actors (athletes, referees, environments, intermediate processing steps). We have demonstrated that representing sports as a multidimensional signal can lead to the categorization of sports through computation. We claim that our approach could be applied to transfer training methods from similar sports, analysis of the training process, and referee error measurement.
Our study was not without limitations. Further research is required to validate our theoretical model by embedding available variables in latent space to calculate similarity measures between sports.

Abstract

Charles Travis argues that perception has no representational content and consists only in the relation of direct presentation (acquaintance) of mind‑independent particulars. He bases his argument on an interpretation of Gottlob Frege’s writings. I argue against Travis that, according to Frege, not only perceptual beliefs but also perception as a presentation of particulars has representational content. The paper identifies three problems for the claim that perceptual acquaintance involves representation.

Abstract

Development of a reliable numerical model capturing major physical mechanisms controlling explosive welding and considering properties of all process components i.e. base plate and flyer plate is the goal of the paper. To properly replicate materials behavior under these severe conditions a meshfree approach, namely Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), was used to discretize the computational domain. The model is based on the Mie-Gruneisen shock equation of state applied to the Ti/Cu system as a case study. Examples of results in the form of velocity, equivalent stress, equivalent strain, and pressure fields are presented within the paper.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the research of the motif of deception in the fairy‑tales of the Polish and Ukrainian writer S. Ostashevskyi. The work offers arguments for the topicality of the research as well as for the choice of the analysis methodology. It also emphasizes the significance of studying the author’s creative works with a view to revealing those connections between Ukrainian and Polish culture which indisputably prove their kinship. Four types of the deception motif have been distinguished based on the collections of fairy‑tales Half‑a‑Kopa Fairy‑Tales for the Little World and Half‑a‑Hundred Fairy‑Tales for Jolly People. These types are as follows: “a creature with superpowers deceives people by appearing in front of them in an anthropomorphous, intentionally inferior, everyday image”, “an infernal character takes people in without changing its image but promising material benefits and solutions to people’s life problems in exchange for their own souls or their children’s souls”, “a person (usually, a woman) deceives/tries to deceive an infernal character or some supreme forces in general”, and “a person deludes another person”. The comparison of this material with the corresponding folklore and literary heritage has defined the specificity of using and transforming the deception motif by S. Ostashevskyi: dependence on the expression of the religious idea, comical play such as appears in the 19th‑century burlesque and travesty art, and reflection on the harmonious combination of Ukrainian and Polish folklore traditions.

Abstract

Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR) through sparse representation has received much attention in the past decade due to significant development in sparse coding algorithms. However, recovering high-frequency textures is a major bottleneck of existing SISR algorithms. Considering this, dictionary learning approaches are to be utilized to extract high-frequency textures which improve SISR performance significantly. In this paper, we have proposed the SISR algorithm through sparse representation which involves learning of Low Resolution (LR) and High Resolution (HR) dictionaries simultaneously from the training set. The idea of training coupled dictionaries preserves correlation between HR and LR patches to enhance the Super-resolved image. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a visual comparison is made with popular SISR algorithms and also quantified through quality metrics. The proposed algorithm outperforms compared to existing SISR algorithms qualitatively and quantitatively as shown in experimental results. Furthermore, the performance of our algorithm is remarkable for a smaller training set which involves lesser computational complexity. Therefore, the proposed approach is proven to be superior based upon visual comparisons and quality metrics and have noticeable results at reduced computational complexity.

Abstract

In this interview, Kalle Pihlainen discusses the challenges which academic historical writing meets from other ways of using history. The proliferation of these contexts seems to offer numerous new opportunities, but they need to be responded to with advance theoretical reflec-tion. It is important to not fall under the illusion of direct access to reality (historical reality included). Hence, mastery of the constructivist perspective is still needed for doing reliable historical research and theoretical reflection on history. Representation still proves to be one of the most important questions. Pihlainen stands firmly for the narrativist philosophy of history, although one of his main concerns are materiality and embodiment.

Abstract

This paper presents a video encoding method in which noise is encoded using a novel parametric model representing spectral envelope and spatial distribution of energy. The proposed method has been experimentally assessed using video test sequences in a practical setup consisting of a simple, real-time noise reduction technique and High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC). The attained results show that the use of the proposed parametric modelling of noise can improve the subjective quality of reconstructed video by approximately 1.8 Mean Opinion Scope (MOS) points (in 11-point scale) related to the classical video coding. Moreover, the present work confirms results attained in the previous works that the usage of even sole noise reduction prior to the encoding provides quality increase.

Abstract

In this article attention is paid to improving the quality of text document classification. The common techniques of analysis of text documents used in classification are shown and the weakness of these methods are stressed. Discussed here is the integration of quantitative and qualitative methods, which is increasing the quality of classification. In the proposed approach the expanded terms, obtained by using information patterns are used in the Latent Semantic Analysis. Finally empirical research is presented and based upon the quality measures of the text document classification, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is proved.

Abstract

This study presents a potential solution to a long-standing question of the phonological representation of short diphthongs. Their mere existence in Old English, the West-Saxon dialect, in particular, has been a matter of great controversy among historical phonologists and beyond. Some attention has been paid to short diphthongs attested in Icelandic by structuralists and phoneticians. Additionally, glide emergence, where a short vowel is expected, seems to take place in the present- day Sursilvan dialect of the Romansh language. What these languages have in common is that diphthongs occur in specific contexts, namely, they are allowed before consonants that are marked by what might be defined as secondary articulation. In this paper, in order to account for the occurrence of short diphthongs in these contexts, I adopt a structural model of phonological representations whereby glide emergence is the result of the interplay between a weak, empty-headed onset and the preceding nucleus.

Abstract

A navigation complex of an unmanned flight vehicle of small class is considered. Increasing the accuracy of navigation definitions is done with the help of a nonlinear Kalman filter in the implementation of the algorithm on board an aircraft in the face of severe limitations on the performance of the special calculator. The accuracy of the assessment depends on the available reliable information on the model of the process under study, which has a high degree of uncertainty. To carry out high-precision correction of the navigation complex, an adaptive non-linear Kalman filter with parametric identification was developed. The model of errors of the inertial navigation system is considered in the navigation complex, which is used in the algorithmic support. The procedure for identifying the parameters of a non-linear model represented by the SDC method in a scalar form is used. The developed adaptive non-linear Kalman filter is compact and easy to implement on board an aircraft.

Abstract

Investigation of influence of TiN thin film morphology on deformation inhomogeneities is an overall subject of the research. Numerical modelling approach that was selected for the study is based on the digital material representation concept, which gives an opportunity to directly replicate columnar microstructure morphology of an investigated thin film. Particular attention in this paper is put on the discussion of the influence of cellular automata neighbourhood on thin-film digital morphologies and their further deformation behaviour. Additionally, an evaluation of representativeness aspects of the digital models, in particular, the analysis of the influence of a number of columns, their dimensions and variations in their properties on the material behaviour during compression tests is also presented. The non-periodic boundary conditions are assumed during the investigation. Obtained data in the form of equivalent stress distributions as well as homogenized stress-strain curves from analyzed case studies are presented and discussed within the paper.

Abstract

The aim of the article is to reflect on the phenomenon of great art exhibitions, gathering exhibits, mainly paintings, exceptional from the perspective of national cultural heritage, which collectively represent a defined generational message. The reflection included the best‑known exhibitions of recent decades, being an expression of the historical culture of a time of great changes in the life of Polish society at the turn of the 21st century. These are two exhibitions at the National Museum in Kraków, the first exhibition ever by Marek Rostworowski, “Polish self‑portrait” (1979); the second is an exhibition of Marek Szczerski’s work entitled #dziedzictwo/heritage (2017); a jubilee exhibition organised by the National Museum in Warsaw in collaboration with the Louvre‑Lens Museum, the National Museum in Poznan and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute on the centennial of regaining independence, entitled “Poland. The power of the image” (2019‑2021). This reflection also includes the monumental exhibition organised collectively by the Royal Castle in Warsaw and the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, with the participation of the curator Anda Rottenberg, entitled “Side by side. Germany‑Poland 1000 years of history in art.” (2012).

Abstract

Information and decision projects in the area of civil engineering are usually complex and heterogeneous. This, in turn, requires the use of IT solutions to support them. The selection of the appropriate models for data or knowledge representation, which are the information resources of such systems in connection with the selection of analytical and decision models, can be considered as one of the elements of the rationalization of engineering projects. The approach that takes account of the significant complexity and heterogeneity of problems is a system approach with the use of an objectoriented way of organizing data or knowledge. Not only does it ensure efficient modelling of information and decision processes in the field of engineering projects (also in crisis situations), due to the uniformity of the model approach, it also allows for maintaining the continuity of the implementation of complex processes of various specificity, e.g. the different levels of structuring or the randomness of partial problems.

Abstract

The Paschal Mystery of Christ made present in the sacramental liturgy is a model of spiritual growth of Christians on the way of purification, illumination, and unificati-on. The transition (Passover) of Christ from death to life is a model of a Christian way. Christians live in connection with the paschal mystery every day when they strive to do what is more perfect and when they express the newness of life in the performance of good deeds. The participation in the transition of Christ through death to a new life consists in abandoning the way of life of a sinful man and striving for deeds of a man renewed in the mystery of Christ’s death and His glorious resurrection. Faith received at baptism enables a man to participate in the paschal mystery of Christ and offers a participation in the resurrection of the Son of God. The union with Christ and remai-ning in Him is the participation in the sacrifice of the Savior according to the paschal theology. The Passover is an event that brightens with its splendor not only the life of the individual Christian, but also the whole history of mankind. The final fulfillment in Christ is the purpose of the whole universe.

Abstract

This article deals with the problem of representation of the nuclear holocaust in literary theory (in the context of deconstruction theory) and in some literary works (usually dubbed Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic fiction), i.e. John Hersey's Hiroshima, Hara Tamiki's Summer Flowers, Ibuse Masuji's The Crazy Iris, and Stanisław Lem's novel His Master's Voice and his short story Man from Hiroshima. The problem of representing a calamitous event is discussed here in connection with recent debates on the nature and status of testimony (especially Dori Laub's witness and testimony studies).

Abstract

In the course of the 19th century the landscape of the village Mogiła and its environs acquired the status of a religious and cultural heritage site. An ancient mound of the legendary Princess Wanda and the associations of the Kościuszko Uprising (1794) exerted a strong appeal to the imagination of Polish writers and their readers. Moreover, as the article argues, the great reverence which was attached to Cracow, Poland’s old royal capital, rubbed off on Mogiła. Made in 1949, the decision to build Nowa Huta, a giant steelworks and a modern new town, at that very place meant the desecration of a portion of the fabric of Poland’s national heritage.

Abstract

This article presents the results of a study aimed at reconstructing the image of the woman citizen promoted in the women’s magazines in 1989–1992, the first phase of the great transformation following the collapse of Poland’s socialist system. Within the scope of the study were high-circulation magazines (over 500,000 copies), including the two leading weeklies “Przyjaciółka” and “Kobieta i Życie”. A total of 208 issues of every magazine published in that time span were analyzed. The methods used included content and textual analysis, complemented by the examination of some recurrent topoi treated as indicators of some inexplicit (hidden) meanings, i.e. the attitudes of women to the process of reform, their role in the agenda for change, and the barriers they came up against in the public sphere.

Abstract

The article examines the representations of American family life and customs in the illustrated weekly Tygodnik Mód i Powieści [ A Weekly of Fashion and Novels] from 1860, when Jan Kanty Gregorowicz became editor-in-chief, until 1900. Women's lives got a lot of attention in these stories, in keeping with the magazine's profile. In Congress Poland Tygodnik Mód i Powieści had a large female readership (its main competitor was the weekly Bluszcz), though, by cultivating a lighter tone, it tried to appeal to a broader audience than a typical women's magazine.
