Abstract

Kaolinitic clays from intercoal complex B of Turów open pit are characterized by advantageous technological parameters required in industry of ceramic tiles. Technological properties of fast-fired clays are influenced, to a large extent, by time and conditions of their thermal treatment. Their fast firing in laboratory roller kiln leads to intense sintering within temperature range 1150-1200°C what results in the increase of total shrinkage and the decrease of water absorption.

Abstract

The paper presents increasing importance of secondary (waste) raw materials in the domestic management of mineral raw materials. The definition of mineral waste raw material is proposed. Paper reviews various types of mineral waste raw materials and their use in the economy. Sources of information on manufacture and use of mineral waste raw materials arc analysed. In the conclusion, current and future significance of such materials in the domestic management of mineral raw materials is evaluated.

Abstract

The article presents three different approaches to a valuation of a mineral deposit. The use of classical DCF methodology was tested against option pricing supplemented by scenario analysis. The option-pricing approach was applied in order to include the freedom of choice factor into consideration. The DCF methodology disregards the fact that acquiring party may alternate time scheme of investing in mining activities according to when the deposit will be really needed. The scenario analysis was employed in order to translate financial solutions into real action plans.

Abstract

The mathematical models of narrow enough class will be considered in the frames of present statement: model of geological surroundings; geometrical model of object; model of distribution of stresses and shifts around working (main working, development working, coal face); model of distribution of extension and transpherences around the system of holes; model of interaction of scanning signals (waves) with the structural and power heterogeneities in rock mass.

Abstract

The Żelazny Most dam, the biggest industrial dump in Europe, which serves as a recipient of copper ores flotation tailings, has been operating for 25 years. The area of the dam is 14 km2, volume 315x 106 m3, and final volume up to 700 x I06 m3. The water from the dam seeps into an underlying phreatic porous aquifer. The aquifer is quite heterogeneous, ofvariable thickness from I up to 20 m, including layers ofhigh transmissivity up to 300 m2/d. Several plumes flow into the aquifer mainly containing chlorides and sulfates. The largest plume extends 900 m downstream of the dam. A two-dimensional regional model for the vicinity ofthe tailings dam serves as a basic tool for environmental impact assessment, prediction of groundwater pollution and methods of groundwater protection. The model is permanently fitted and calibrated every 4--5 years according to hydrogeological, hydrological and geophysical monitoring. Technologies for groundwater pollution control were developed. The idea is to limit hydraulic outflow from the dam. Series ofwells were designed around the dam to modify hydraulic patterns. New water divides arc going to develop and restrict movements of pollutants.

Abstract

In Poland, in some sites of mining Zn-Pb/Fe ore and hard coal, the shallow exploitation caused discontinuous deformations on the surface. The complicated geological and mining conditions create difficulties in describing the mechanisms of forming and propagating the deformations. In such conditions the geophysical methods are useful for recognizing the anomalies in rock mass and for predicting its development. Some of them like gravimetric, resistivity, ground penetrating radar and seismic are the most applicable. This work gives also some basic remarks on advantages and limitations of geophysical methods related with recognition of discontinuous deformation causes.

Abstract

Strategic value of a project ( or the value of strategic opportunities) appears when the realization of a project offers additional opportunities which would not be discovered if the project had not been chosen to be realized. The projects with strategic value are often called creating options as they give the rights, but not the obligation, to use these additional opportunities, an investor will exercise the option ifhe finds it beneficial. Many investment projects connected with the exploration and development of mineral resources have strategic values. The main aim of this paper is to present the importance of the complex analysis of mining investment projects which allows one to discover their strategic value. The paper demonstrates methods of the assessment of a project with strategic value through the application of the approaches based on scenario planning, simulation as well as on real options concept.

Abstract

Environmental issues are having an increasing influence, on the mining industry. Mining and metallurgical processes are burdensome to the environment, mainly due to large bulk ofmaterial to be transported and processed. It is impossible to contain such extensive activities within a limited area so the spheres of influence cover considerable areas, even changing the landscape. The primary non-ferrous industries are particular examples of this, as non-ferrous ores contains only a few percent ofmetals. The rest of extracted mineral has to eliminate gradually in the successive stages of production. Thus, it is technology that decides the quality of the streams of separated waste and their total amount cannot deny the law ofmass conversation.
