Abstract

This article focuses on mobility of companies in the European Union in the light of the Court of Justice’s judgment in the C-106/16 Polbud – Wykonawstwo sp. z o.o. case. The Court of Justice has once again interpreted the treaty provisions relating to the EU freedom of establishment in the context of cross-border conversion of companies. The in-depth analysis of the case from the substantive law perspective as well as from the conflict-of-law perspective has raised some doubts with regard to the background of the judgment. Therefore, the article assesses whether the cross-border transfer of a seat took place in the Polbud case or the cross-border conversion, or possibly a new company has come into existence. Most of the analysis is aimed at exposing the risks related to the companies’ mobility under the rules adopted in the Polbud judgment, in particular in the absence of respective European and national regulation.

Abstract

W strap is a crucial surface support component for underground coal mine roadways. In this study, the failure characteristics of the W strap in the field are discussed, and the loading characteristics of the strap and the faceplate are numerically and experimentally analysed. Afterwards, a loading apparatus capable of reappearing the loading environment of the strap in the field is fabricated. This loading device, combined support systems consisting of a bolt, faceplate and strap is tested under different simulated strata conditions. Failure patterns of the strap are evaluated by the 3D scanning method, and proper selection of a faceplate is explored. Results indicate that a domed faceplate can achieve a favourable supporting effect on strata, and thus it is favoured compared with a square domed faceplate. In addition, rock cavity and rock integrity beneath the strap are essential factors determining the servicing life of the overall supporting system.

Abstract

The study was conducted to identify significant predictors of psychological distress in the group of young Polish adults during COVID-19 epidemic outbreak. The web-based cross-sectional survey was applied to 975 Polish respondents (755 female, 77.44%) aged 18-35 years. They were divided into two age groups: younger (18-25) and older (25-35). All participants completed: General Functioning Questionnaire (GFQ), COVID-19 Risk Perception Scale (C-RPS), State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), and General Sense of Threat to Life Scale (GSTLS). The Polish adults aged 18-25 years manifested significantly higher psychological distress, state anxiety, and a sense of threat to life, but they perceived less risk in COVID-19 epidemic compared to older participants. Risk perception and a sense of threat to life were indirectly related to state anxiety and psychological distress. Significant predictors of psychological distress in the group of young adult Poles during the COVID-19 epidemic are: state anxiety, risk perception, and a sense of threat to life, where risk perception and a sense of threat to life mediate the relation between state anxiety and psychological distress.

Abstract

Learning a foreign language in the context of formal education often imposes on students the management of difficult tasks. This demands an adoption of adequate coping behaviour (achievement vs. avoidance). Easy tasks reduce learning opportunities, while too difficult ones lead to escape-motivated problem behavior. For the purpose of the present research it is proposed that the level of FL task difficulty is related to coping behaviour. The empirical results demonstrate that students who perceive FL tasks as difficult apply more avoidance strategies. Apart from that, students with higher and lower levels of task difficulty use similar amounts of achievement strategies. It follows that the implementation of achievement coping is independent from the level of task difficulty.

Abstract

The possibility of a normal distribution indicates that few particles are in the same phase during a breath and their reflections can be observed on the chest wall, then a few explosive waves with relatively large power occurr occasionally. Therefore, the one-cycle sine wave which is simulated as a single burst of the explosive effect phenomenon penetrates through the chest wall and was analysed to explore the reason of the crackle sounds. The results explain the differences between the definitions of crackle proposed by Sovijärvi et al. (2000a). The crackles in the lungs were synthesised by a computer simulation. When the coarse crackles occur, the results indicate that higher burst frequency carriers (greater than 100 Hz) directly penetrate the bandpass filter to simulate the chest wall. The simulated coarse crackle sounds were low pitched, with a high amplitude and long duration. The total duration was greater than 10 ms. However, for a lower frequency carrier (approximately 50 Hz), the fundamental frequency component was filtered out. Therefore, the second harmonic component of the lower frequency carrier, i.e., the fine crackle, penetrated the chest wall. Consequently, it is very possible that the normal lung sounds may contain many crackle-shaped waves with very small amplitudes because of the filtering effects of the chest wall, environment noises, electric devices, stethoscopes, and human ears, the small crackles disappear in the auscultations. In addition, our study pointed out that some unknown crackles of the very low frequency under the bandwidth of the human ears cannot penetrate the airways and be detected by medical doctors. Therefore, it might be necessary to focus advanced electronic instrumentation on them in order to analyse their possible characteristics for diagnosis and treatment of the respiration system.

Abstract

The goal of this article is to present and compare recent approaches which use speech and voice analysis as biomarkers for screening tests and monitoring of some diseases. The article takes into account metabolic, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, and nervous system disorders. A selection of articles was performed to identify studies that assess voice features quantitatively in selected disorders by acoustic and linguistic voice analysis. Information was extracted from each paper in order to compare various aspects of datasets, speech parameters, methods of applied analysis and obtained results. 110 research papers were reviewed and 47 databases were summarized. Speech analysis is a promising method for early diagnosis of certain disorders. Advanced computer voice analysis with machine learning algorithms combined with the widespread availability of smartphones allows diagnostic analysis to be conducted during the patient’s visit to the doctor or at the patient’s home during a telephone conversation. Speech analysis is a simple, low-cost, non-invasive and easy-toprovide method of medical diagnosis. These are remarkable advantages, but there are also disadvantages. The effectiveness of disease diagnoses varies from 65% up to 99%. For that reason it should be treated as a medical screening test and should be an indication of the need for classic medical tests.

Abstract

The use of environmentally friendly bio-pesticides is crucial for higher root and sugar yield in sugar beets. The economic importance of beet moth [ Scrobipalpa ocellatella Boyd. (Lep.: Gelechidae)] losses in the field and storage highlight the need for evaluation of appropriate, environmentally friendly methods for pest control. The aims of the present study were to i) assess azadirachin (AZN) effects on the life cycle and activity of the pest, and ii) manage the beet moth on roots under laboratory conditions. For the experiments, the main concentrations were prepared on the basis of the field-recommended dose of this pesticide (1–1.5 l/1000 l water). The LC50 was estimated for 3rd instar larvae. Later, at sublethal concentrations, the relative time for the emergence of each developmental stage was determined. The mean female fecundity was 37% (±4) for treated tests at the lowest AZN concentration (0.5 ml · l–1). AZN at 0.5 ml · l–1 concentration resulted in 62 (±4) deposited eggs per plant for the treated roots and 326 (±1) for roots in the control test. Mortality increased in response to increased AZN concentrations. The results revealed that after 72 h, the highest AZN concentration (2.5 ml · l–1) caused 100% repellency and 82% (±1.38) mortality on 3rd instar larvae. According to our findings, a concentration of 2 ml · l–1 AZN (20 gr active ingredient per 1 hectare) after 4 days affected 1st instar larvae and the larvae with no further development had 92.2% (±1.2) mortality. In conclusion, the results revealed that AZN as a biorational pesticide can significantly minimize the losses of S. ocellatella on sugar beet crops.

Abstract

In recent years, infections are more often caused by pathogens with high multi-drug resistance, classified as the “ESKAPE” microorganisms. Therefore, investigation of these pathogens, e.g., Klebsiella pneumoniae, often requires biomass production for treatment testing such as antibiotics or bacteriophages. Moreover, K. pneumoniae can be successfully applied as a biocatalyst for other industrial applications, increasing the need for this bacteria biomass. In the current study, we proposed a novel magnetically assisted bioreactor for the cultivation of K. pneumoniae cells in the presence of an external alternating magnetic field (AMF). High efficiency of the production requires optimal bacteria growth conditions, e.g., temperature and field frequency. Therefore, we performed an optimization procedure using a central composite design for these two parameters in a wide range. As an objective function, we utilized a novel, previously described growth factor that considers both biomass and bacteria growth kinetics. Thus, based on the response surface, we could specify the optimal growth conditions. Moreover, we analysed the impact of the AMF on bacteria proliferation, which indicated positive field frequency windows, where the highest stimulatory effect of AMF on bacteria proliferation occurred. Obtained results proved that the magnetically assisted bioreactor could be successfully employed for K. pneumoniae cultivation.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to indicate the influence of consolidation processes on microstructure and selected mechanical properties of powder metallurgy Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr alloy, which was produced by blending of elemental powders method. Morphology of the mixture and its ingredients were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The consolidation of powders mixture was conducted using two approaches. The first consisted of the uniaxial hot pressing process, the second included two steps – uniaxial cold pressing process and sintering under argon protective atmosphere. Microstructural analysis was performed for both as-pressed compacts using light microscopy. Additionally, computed tomography studies were carried out, in order to examine the internal structure of compacts. Chosen mechanical properties, such as Vickers hardness and compression strength was also determined and compared. The conducted research proves that the proposed production method leads to obtain materials with no structural defects and relatively low porosity. Moreover, due to the proper selection of manufacturing parameters, favorable microstructures can be received, as well as mechanical properties, which are comparable to conventionally produced material with the corresponding chemical composition.

Abstract

Steel loss related to the formation of scale is a parameter that is of great importance in the charge heating process. The value of steel loss determined by the thickness of the scale layer affects the intensity of the heat transfer process in the heating furnace, but also constitutes a significant element in the heat-material balance. Reducing the loss of steel during charge heating has a positive effect on heat consumption and material losses, which is extremely important in the context of energy and resource savings, the main elements of sustainable development processes. The methodology of determining the loss of steel to scale in an industrial heating furnace is presented in the paper. The results of calculations for various charge temperatures at the entrance to the furnace are presented. The influence of furnace operating conditions on steel loss is discussed.

Abstract

The clock synchronization is considered as a key technology in the time-sensitive networking (TSN) of 5G fronthaul. This paper proposes a clock synchronization enhancement method to optimize the link delays, in order to improve synchronization accuracy. First, all the synchronization dates are filtered twice to get the good calculation results in the processor, and then FPGA adjust the timer on the slave side to complete clock synchronization. This method is implemented by Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC (multiprocessor system-on-chip), using FPGA+ARM software and hardware co-design platform. The master and slave output Pulse Per-Second signals (PPS). The synchronization accuracy was evaluated by measuring the time offset between PPS signals. Contraposing the TSN, this paper compares the performance of the proposed scheme with some previous methods to show the efficacy of the proposed work. The results show that the slave clock of proposed method is synchronized with the master clock, leading to better robustness and significant improvement in accuracy, with time offset within the range of 40 nanoseconds. This method can be applied to the time synchronization of the 5G open fronthaul network and meets some special service needs in 5G communication.

Abstract

Distributed measurement often relies on sensor networks. In this paper, we present the construction of low-coherence fiber-optic Fabry–Pérot sensors connected into a quasi-distributed network. We discuss the mechanism of spectrum modulation in this type of sensor and the constraints of assembly of such sensors in the network. Particular attention was paid to separate the signals from individual sensors which can be achieved by cavity length-based addressing. We designed and built a laboratory model of a temperature sensors network. The employed sensors are low-coherence Fabry–Pérot interferometric sensors in a fiberoptics configuration. The extrinsic sensor cavity utilizes the thermal expansion of ceramics, and the sensors are addressed by the different lengths of the cavities. The obtained test results showthat the signal components from each sensor can be successfully separated, and the number of sensors could be expanded depending on the FWHM of the light source.

Abstract

A π-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (π-FBG) shows high sensitivity to the ultrasonic (US) wave as compared to the conventional FBG due to the strong slow-light phenomenon at the resonance peak. However, its sensitivity is limited by the interrogation schemes. A combination of π-FBG and unbalanced fiber Mach– Zehnder interferometer (F-MZI) are theoretically analyzed and optimized for the highly sensitive acoustic sensor. The coupled-mode theory (CMT) and transfer matrix method (TMM) are used to establish the numerical modelling of π-FBG. For the optimized grating parameters of π-FBG, the proposed sensing system shows the high strain sensitivity of 1.2 × 108/ε, the highest dynamic strain resolution of 4.1fε/√Hz, and the highest wavelength shift resolution of 4.9 × 10−9 pm. Further, the proposed sensing system strongly supports both time andwavelength division multiplexing techniques. Therefore, the proposed sensing system shows extreme importance in single as well as quasi-distributed US acoustic wave sensing networks.

Abstract

Every bone implant to work correctly after implantation needs to integrate with the surrounding bone. To enhance such a process, called osseointegration, various techniques of implant surface modification emerged. One of the approaches is based on the deposition of nano- and submicron materials on the implant surface. This paper presents a solution blow spinning process for producing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/ceramic fibrous composites designed to be deposited directly onto orthopaedic implants prior to implantation to increase osseointegration. We produced plain PLLA fibrous materials for comparison, and fibrous composite materials with ��-tricalcium phosphate (��TCP), hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHAp) and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles modified with lecithin (nHAp-LE). We performed the structural analysis of produced materials with scanning electron microscopy, gravimetric determination of porosity, and water contact angle measurement. We also used infrared spectroscopy, Alizarin Red S staining, and cytotoxicity evaluation to conclude that PLLA/nHAp-LE composite material shows the most promising properties to be applied as surface modification of bone implants. To visualise fibrous composite deposition on implants, we used two models: titanium plate and stainlesssteel bolt. Thus, we showed that the solution blow spun materials can be used for surface modification of orthopaedic implants.

Abstract

A new solar tracking sensor based on image recognition is proposed and designed to solve the problem of low accuracy of photoelectric tracking in photovoltaic power generation. The sensor can directly output its angular deviation from the sun, and its mechanical structure and working principle are analysed in detail. We use a high-precision camera to collect the image of the two slots on the projector surface and use the Hough transform to identify the image of the light seam. After obtaining the linear equation for the two slots, the coordinate of the intersection point is found, and the calculation of the solar altitude and azimuth can be realized. We have improved the Hough transform scheme by using the skeleton image of the slots instead of the edge image. The improvement of the scheme has been proved to effectively improve the detection accuracy. A calibration test board is used to test the sensor and experimental results show that the scheme can achieve the measurement of azimuth and altitude with the accuracy of be 0.05°, which can meet the detection accuracy requirements of the solar tracking in photovoltaic power generation and many other photoelectric tracking implementations.

Abstract

In the paper, we investigate queueing system M/G/∞ with non–homogeneous customers. As non–homogenity, we mean that each customer is characterized by some arbitrarily distributed random volume. The arriving customers appear according to a stationary Poisson process. Service time of a customer is proportional to his volume. The system is unreliable what means that all its servers can break simultaneously and then the repair period goes on for random time having an arbitrary distribution. During this period, customers present in the system and arriving to it are not served. Their service continues immediately after repair period termination. Time intervals of the system in good repair mode have an exponential distribution. For such system, we determine steady–state sojourn time and total volume of customers present in it distributions. We also estimate the loss probability for the similar system with limited total volume. An analysis of some special cases and some numerical examples are attached as well.

Abstract

This contribution characterises the stratigraphic schemes of the Quaternary as constructed and published by Leszek Lindner in 1967–2019. The oldest schemes assume the subdivision of the Pleistocene into three glaciations (i.e., Cracow, Middle-Polish and Baltic) separated by two interglacials (Great and Eemian). The scheme published in 1992 comprises eight glacial and seven interglacial units. The most recent scheme for the Quaternary contains seven advances of the Scandinavian ice-sheet on the area of Poland during the Nidanian (MIS 22), Sanian 1 (MIS 16), Sanian 2 (MIS 12), Liviecian (MIS 10), Krznanian (MIS 8), Odranian (MIS 6), and Vistulian (MIS 2–5d) glaciations. They are separated by six interglacials: Podlasian, Ferdynandovian, Mazovian, Zbójnian, Lublinian and Eemian. The ranges of glacial transgressions, and key interglacial and preglacial sites are assembled in a cumulative scheme for the area of Poland. We review the main study methods on which the subsequent versions of the stratigraphic scheme were based. These include Prof. Lindner’s own detailed field research in glaciated and extraglacial areas, and paleofloristic, paleontological and paleomagnetic studies of major interglacial sites carried out by numerous researchers, as well as thorough literature studies.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of research on the effect of added iron powder from plasma cutting on the mechanical properties and structure of a composite rod based on aluminum powder. The iron powder came from plasma cutting of steel elements and was handed over by the enterprise “AK Anatol” from Żary. One of the ways to dispose of it is to use it as a filler in aluminum composite rods. Research shows that Fe can be distributed in aluminum evenly, and increase in mechanical properties is achieved at the expense of only a slight increase in density. The proposed system does not reduce the amount of waste produced by plasma cutting but finds a use for some of it. The sintering point of the powder required a strongly reducing atmosphere (PO2 < 10–50 atm) which seems virtually unachievable under laboratory conditions. The reinforcing mechanism is related to the fragmentation of the matrix aggregate particles and the uniform distribution of Fe particles in the aluminum matrix.

Abstract

In investigations constituting Part I of this paper, the effect of approximations in the flexural-torsional buckling analysis of beam-columns was studied. The starting point was the formulation of displacement field relationships built straightforward in the deflected configuration. It was shown that the second-order rotation matrix obtained with keeping the trigonometric functions of the mean twist rotation was sufficiently accurate for the flexural-torsional stability analysis. Furthermore, Part I was devoted to the formulation of a general energy equation for FTB being expressed in terms of prebuckling stress resultants and in-plane deflections through the factor k 1. The energy equation developed there was presented in several variants dependent upon simplified assumptions one may adopt for the buckling analysis, i.e. the classical form of linear eigenproblem analysis (LEA), the form of quadratic eigenproblem analysis (QEA) and refined (non-classical) forms of nonlinear eigenproblem analysis (NEA), all of them used for solving the flexural-torsional buckling problems of elastic beamcolumns. The accuracy of obtained analytical solutions based on different approximations in the elastic flexural–torsional stability analysis of thin-walled beam-columns is examined and discussed in reference to those of earlier studies. The comparison is made for closed form solutions obtained in a companion paper, with a scatter of results evaluated for k 1 = 1 in the solutions of LEA and QEA, as well as for all the options corresponding to NEA. The most reliable analytical solution is recommended for further investigations. The solutions for selected asymmetric loading cases of the left support moment and the half-length uniformly distributed span load of a slender unrestrained beam-column are discussed in detail in Part II. Moreover, the paper constituting Part II investigates how the buckling criterion obtained for the beam-column laterally and torsionally unrestrained between the end sections might be applied for the member with discrete restraints. The recommended analytical solutions are verified with use of numerical finite element method results, considering beam-columns with a mid-section restraint. A variant of the analytical form of solutions recommended in these investigations may be used in practical application in the Eurocode’s General Method of modern design procedures for steelwork.

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of determining the load of a model tunnel lining in a noncohesive soil medium at two different heights of soil backfill above the structure. A series of simulations were performed with the flexible and rigid tunnel lining. The analysis was performed by conducting simulations with the use of an author’s program based on the discrete element method. The model previously calibrated on the basis of laboratory tests was used. The loads acting on the structure, the distribution of stresses in the surrounding soil medium and the displacements of this medium in the vicinity of the structure were determined and compared. The effect of soil weight and technological load applied from the surface was taken into account. The values of the numerically obtained loads of the tunnel lining were compared with those calculated according to the classic Hewett’s method.
It has been proven that in both cases the degree of cooperation between the structure and soil is significantly related to the rigidity of the structure, hence the loads determined may differ significantly from the results obtained according to classical methods. It was shown that discrete modelling allows to reflect differences in the behaviour of the soil medium resulting from different heights of soil backfill. Smaller horizontal pressure was obtained in the side zones of an excavation at a higher backfill. In addition, significantly greater intensity of vertical soil displacements over the lining were observed with a lower backfill height.

Abstract

The effect of large injection rates on the steady laminar compressible boundary layer in the front stagnation-point region of a rotating sphere with a magnetic field has been studied. The effect of variable gas properties, non-unity Prandtl number and viscous dissipation are included in the analysis. The nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations governing the flow are first linearized using the quasilinearization technique, and the resulting system of linear equations are then solved using an implicit finite-difference scheme with non-uniform step size. For large injection rates, analytical expressions for the surface shear stresses in the longitudinal and rotating directions and the surface heat transfer are also obtained using an approximate method. For large injection rates, the surface heat transfer tends to zero, but the surface shear stresses in the longitudinal and rotating directions remain finite but small. The surface shear stresses and the surface heat transfer decrease with increasing rate of injection, but they increase with the magnetic field and the rotation parameter. The magnetic field or the rotation parameter induces an overshoot in the longitudinal velocity profile and the magnitude of the velocity overshoot increases significantly with the rotation parameters and the injection parameter. The location of the dividing streamline moves away from the boundary with increasing injection rate, but it moves towards the boundary with increasing magnetic and rotation parameters.

Abstract

We examined the role of work-related emotions and personal resources operationalised as psychological capital (PsyCap) in the relationship between events occurring at work and employees’ work engagement. Using affective events theory and broaden-and-build theory as theoretical frameworks, we theorise that the perceived frequency of positive and negative events at work and work engagement is mediated by positive and negative work-related emotions and moderated by PsyCap. The results of path analysis on a sample of US and Polish employees showed that PsyCap moderated the relationship between the perceived frequency of negative work events and negative work-related emotions, however, we also found culture-specific effects of PsyCap. Our study contributes to the human resource development (HRD) literature by providing evidence of the role of personal resources in the event–emotion–engagement process in the workplace. Also, our findings deepen the understanding of HR developers in multinational organisations and provide suggestions on how they can implement PsyCap trainings based on culture-specific work environment.
