Abstract

This study aims to optimize the 2-cylinder in-line reciprocating compressor crankshaft. As the crankshaft is considered the "bulkiest" component of the reciprocating compressor, its weight reduction is the focus of current research for improved performance and lower cost. Therefore, achieving a lightweight crankshaft without compromising the mechanical properties is the core objective of this study. Computational analysis for the crankshaft design optimization was performed in the following steps: kinematic analysis, static analysis, fatigue analysis, topology analysis, and dynamic modal analysis. Material retention by employing topology optimization resulted in a significant amount of weight reduction. A weight reduction of approximately 13% of the original crankshaft was achieved. At the same time, design optimization results demonstrate improvement in the mechanical properties due to better stress concentration and distribution on the crankshaft. In addition, material retention would also contribute to the material cost reduction of the crankshaft. The exact 3D model of the optimized crankshaft with complete design features is the main outcome of this research. The optimization and stress analysis methodology developed in this study can be used in broader fields such as reciprocating compressors/engines, structures, piping, and aerospace industries.

Abstract

The article describes motion planning of an underwater redundant manipulator with revolute joints moving in a plane under gravity and in the presence of obstacles. The proposed motion planning algorithm is based on minimization of the total energy in overcoming the hydrodynamic as well as dynamic forces acting on the manipulator while moving underwater and at the same time, avoiding both singularities and obstacle. The obstacle is considered as a point object. A recursive Lagrangian dynamics algorithm is formulated for the planar geometry to evaluate joint torques during the motion of serial link redundant manipulator fully submerged underwater. In turn the energy consumed in following a task trajectory is computed. The presence of redundancy in joint space of the manipulator facilitates selecting the optimal sequence of configurations as well as the required joint motion rates with minimum energy consumed among all possible configurations and rates. The effectiveness of the proposed motion planning algorithm is shown by applying it on a 3 degrees-of-freedom planar redundant manipulator fully submerged underwater and avoiding a point obstacle. The results establish that energy spent against overcoming loading resulted from hydrodynamic interactions majorly decides the optimal trajectory to follow in accomplishing an underwater task.

Abstract

Heat transfer augmentation has become the utmost industrial desire. Turbulence promoters seems to be a better option for better heat transfer but at the expense of enormous pressure drop. In the current study, experimental optimization of heat transfer and pressure drop in various configurations of ribbed and corrugated surfaces on the bottom wall of the Solar Air Heater channel, having aspect ratio of 26:5 was performed. The results were evaluated in terms of enhancement in heat transfer (Nu/Nu s), friction factor ratio (f/f s) and thermal performance factor ( η). Three different cases and nine configurations with a pitch to rib/corrugation height ratio of 4.0 were studied. Case A consists of a smooth, continuous square rib, inline and staggered broken ribs. Case B comprises 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° trapezoidal corrugated geometries while Case C is the comparison of smooth, wavy corrugated and the best configurations of cases A and B. The results show that rectangular duct with staggered broken ribs and trapezoidal corrugation at 45° are the best configurations for case A and B, respectively. The 45° corrugated configuration is the best one amongst all, with values of 1.53, 1.5 and 1.33% for Nu/Nu s, f/f s and η respectively.

Abstract

The article presents the study results of electropulse grinding of amber in aqueous and alcoholic media at different amounts of supplied energy. Description of the electropulse grinding laboratory installation, the mechanism of the destruction process of amber particles and methods of statistical processing of experimental data are given. It was established that alcohol medium has a greater impact on the efficiency of crushing than water. Thus, under the same conditions of energy supply, in the aqueous medium the weighted average particle size of amber was 601:6±688:9 μm, and in an alcohol medium – 368:0±269:6 μm. In an aqueous medium, the particle size decreased to 1/13.6 of raw sample, and in an alcoholic medium to 1/22.3 of raw sample compared to the initial size of raw amber. We found that in the aqueous medium the ratio of large to small fractions is mainly the same with the coefficient of alignment of particles with a size of 1.09. In an alcoholic medium, this ratio significantly differs, with the coefficient of alignment of amber particles of a size of 1.67 with the amount of supplied energy of 125 kJ.

Abstract

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) components are commonly used for either prototypes or end products, mostly made of polymers. Polymers offer low frictional resistance to wear, so most of the engineering polymers find their increased usage in day-to-day industrial as well as domestic needs. The influence of many process controlling elements on the mechanical part properties is already being studied extensively, which demands the study of tribological characteristics like friction and wear rate under varying normal load (NL), sliding velocities (V) and part building orientations (PBO). The results showed a significant impact of the PBO and NL at various V on the tribological properties under various significant suitable sliding circumstances. Cracks were formed in the cylindrical tribometer specimens of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) fabricated at low PBO when operated at high NL, and V. Vertical PBO to the FDM building platform in the layers form where a number of inter-layers can bear maximum NL at higher values of V resulted in uniform wear and low frictions. Friction was noticed very low at minimum NL when PBO was 0° (horizontal) and 90° (vertical), but increased at high NL between PBO of 15° to 60°. The FDM parts improved compared to those from conventional manufacturing processes.

Abstract

The preservation of historical documents is a task that requires a multidisciplinary team. Mechanical engineering can make valuable contributions. Historical documents made of paper have unique characteristics that must be considered for their preservation and exhibition. Specially designed encasements have emerged as a solution to meet these requirements. In the present research, a comparative design study was carried out. The study comprises identifying the main functions of the encasements. Subsequently, it is analyzed how the capsules that appear in the literature have solved these functions. With the information obtained, three new encasements were designed for historical documents in Mexico. From the results and design experiences, some insights and design principles were obtained; these can be universally applied.

Abstract

In the previous study, we designed one personal rescue winch for high-rise building rescue. Its key requirement is to be small and light enough to suit users. In addition to using lightweight and reasonable materials as in the proposed winch design, in this study, we proceed to optimize the weight of one two-level gear train, which accounts for a large proportion of weight. The first stage is building a weight optimization problem model with seven independent variables, establishing one optimal algorithm, and investigating the variables by Matlab software. The other is replacing the web material of the gears and pinions with Aluminum 6061-T6 and optimizing their hole diameters and hole numbers through using Ansys software. The obtained result shows a significant weight reduction. Compared to the original design, the weight reduces by 10.21% and 52.40% after the first optimal and last stages, respectively.

Abstract

In this paper, a numerical and experimental investigation of geometrical parameters of the blade for plastic bottle shredder was performed based on the Taguchi method in combination with a response surface method (RSM). Nowadays, plastic waste has become a major threat to the environment. Shredding, in which plastic waste is shredded into small bits, ready for transportation and further processing, is a crucial step in plastic recycling. Although many studies on plastic shredders were performed, there was still a need for more researches on the optimization of shredder blades. Hence, a numerical analysis was carried out to study the influences of the relevant geometrical parameters. Next, a two-step optimization process combining the Taguchi method and the RSM was utilized to define optimal parameters. The simulation results clearly confirmed that the current technique can triumph over the limitation of the Taguchi method, originated from a discrete optimization nature. The optimal blade was then fabricated and experimented, showing lower wear via measurement by an ICamScope® microscope. Hence, it can be clearly inferred from this investigation that the current optimization method is a simple, sufficient tool to be applied in such a traditional process without using any complicated algorithms or expensive software.

Abstract

In this paper a versatile analysis of the cycloidal gearbox vibrations and the resonance phenomenon was performed. The objective of this work was to show resonance phenomenon and vibrations study in the multibody dynamics model and in the finite element model of the cycloidal gearbox. The output torque was analyzed as a function of the external sleeves stiffness.
The results from the multibody dynamics model were verified in the finite element model using natural frequency with load stiffening, direct frequency response and direct transient response analyses.
It was shown that natural frequencies of the cycloidal gearbox undergo changes during motion of the mechanism. The gearbox passes through the thresholds of the increased vibration amplitudes, which lead to excessive wear of the external sleeves.
The analysis in the multibody dynamics model showed, that the increase in the external sleeves stiffness increases frequency of the second-order fluctuation at the output shaft. Small stiffness of the external sleeves guarantees lower frequency of the second order vibrations and higher peak-to-peak values of the output torque.
The performed research plays important role in the cycloidal gearbox design. This work shows gearbox dynamics problems which are associated with wear of the external sleeves.

The present theoretical study is concerned with the analysis of surface roughness effects on the steady-state performance of stepped circular hydrostatic thrust bearings lubricated with non-Newtonian fluids: Rabinowitsch fluid model. To take the effects of surface roughness into account, Christensen’s theory for rough surfaces has been adopted. The expression for pressure gradient has been derived in stochastic form employing the energy integral approach. Results for stochastic film pressure and load-carrying capacity have been plotted and analyzed based on numerical results. Due to surface roughness, significant variations in the theoretical results of these properties have been observed.

Abstract

The perspective of the current analysis is to represent the incompressible viscous flow past a low permeable spheroid contained in a fictitious spheroidal cell. Stokes approximation and Darcy’s equation are adopted to govern the flow in the fluid and permeable zone, respectively. Happel’s and Kuwabara’s cell models are employed as the boundary conditions at the cell surface. At the fluid porous interface, we suppose the conditions of conservation of mass, balancing of pressure component at the permeable area with the normal stresses in the liquid area, and the slip condition, known as Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones condition to be well suitable. A closed-form analytical expression for hydrodynamic drag on the bounded spheroidal particle is determined and therefore, mobility of the particle is also calculated, for both the case of a prolate as well as an oblate spheroid. Several graphs and tables are plotted to observe the dependence of normalized mobility on pertinent parameters including permeability, deformation, the volume fraction of the particle, slip parameter, and the aspect ratio. Significant results that influence the impact of the above parameters in the problem have been pointed out. Our work is validated by referring to previous results available in literature as reduction cases.

Abstract

The structural damages can lead to structural failure if they are not identified at early stages. Different methods for detecting and locating the damages in structures have been always appealing to designers in the field. Due to direct relation between the stiffness, natural frequency, and mode shapes in the structure, the modal parameters could be used for the purpose of detecting and locating the damages in structures. In the current study, a new damage indicator named “DLI” is proposed, using the mode shapes and their derivatives. A finite element model of a beam is used, and the numerical model is validated against experimental data. The proposed index is investigated for two beams with different support conditions and the results are compared with those of two well-known indices – MSEBI and CDF. To show the capability and accuracy of the proposed index, the damages with low severity at various locations of the structures containing the elements near the supports were investigated. The results under noisy conditions are investigated by considering 3% and 5% noise on modal data. The results show a high level of accuracy of the proposed index for identifying the location of the damaged elements in beams.

Abstract

In this work, continuous third-order sliding mode controllers are presented to control a five degrees-of-freedom (5-DOF) exoskeleton robot. This latter is used in physiotherapy rehabilitation of upper extremities. The aspiration is to assist the movements of patients with severe motor limitations. The control objective is then to design adept controllers to follow desired trajectories smoothly and precisely. Accordingly, it is proposed, in this work, a class of homogeneous algorithms of sliding modes having finite-time convergence properties of the states. They provide continuous control signals and are robust regardless of non-modeled dynamics, uncertainties and external disturbances. A comparative study with a robust finite-time sliding mode controller proposed in literature is performed. Simulations are accomplished to investigate the efficacy of these algorithms and the obtained results are analyzed.

Abstract

Vibrational stress relief (VSR) treatment as a method of stress relief is currently performed on different alloys and sizes as an appropriate alternative for thermal stress relief (TSR) method. Although many studies have been performed to extend the knowledge about this process, analytical studies in the field of VSR process seems to require wider efforts to introduce the concept more clearly and extensively. In this study, a theoretical model is proposed based on an analytical equation. The proposed equation was modified in terms of required variables including frequency, amplitude, and vibration duration to encompass more practical parameters compared to the previous models. Thus, essential VSR parameters including the number of cycles as a representative of treatment duration, strain rate as a representative of frequency, and the amplitude were embedded in the model to make it comprehensively practical. Experimental tests were also performed and residual stress distribution was measured by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) method for certain points to compare the experimental results with the theoretical output. An acceptable range of conformation was observed between theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract

The paper presents a numerical analysis carried out to determine the influence of the ground surface fire on the strain level of shelter housing with the ground cover. It is assumed that the underground shelter is longitudinal and the fire spans on an extensive area. The area surrounding the housing was treated as a material with average constant thermodynamic values. The heating and cooling processes were described on the basis of the Fourier’s equation concerning heat conduction in consideration on material, ground and concrete heterogeneous nature. The numeric analysis was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, a quasi-stationary initial temperature distribution was sought in the ground centre and shelter shield. In the second stage of analysis, the fire effect was considered according to the time profile of temperature variation in object.

Abstract

The article describes how different friction coefficients under certain cutting conditions and parameters affect the formation of the stress-strain and thermal states of the product when titanium alloy machining. A new research methodology is used for the study. Firstly, in the initial data for simulation, each time a different declared coefficient of friction is proposed, and every such task of the cutting process modelling is solved for various cutting parameters. The second stage analyzes how these coefficients influence the stress-strain and thermodynamic state of the workpiece and tool during cutting, as well as the tool wear dynamics. In the third stage of the study, ways for ensuring these analytically-grounded tribological cutting conditions are proposed. The analysis of different wear criteria in the simulation models of titanium alloys cutting is carried out. Experimental studies confirm simulation results.

Abstract

Operating cranes is challenging because payloads can experience large and dangerous oscillations. Anti-sway control of crane payload can be approached by the active methods, such as feedback control, or passive methods. The feedback control uses the feedback measurement of swing vibration to produce the command sent to a motor. The feedback control shows good effectiveness, but conflict with the actions of the human operator is a challenge of this method. The passive method uses the spring-damper to dissipate energy. The passive method does not cause conflict with the human operator but has limited performance. This paper presents the combination of two methods to overcome the disadvantages of each separate one. The passive method is used to improve the efficiency of the feedback method to avoid conflicts with the human operator. The effectiveness of the combination is simulated in a 2D crane model.

Abstract

Optimization of cooling systems is of major importance due to the economy of cooling water and energy in thermal installations in the industry. The hydrodynamic study of the film is a prerequisite for the study of the intensity of the heat transfer during the cooling of a horizontal plate by a liquid film. This experimental work made it possible to quantify the hydrodynamic parameters by a new approach, a relation linking the thickness of the film to the velocity was found as a function of the geometrical and hydrodynamic characteristics of the sprayer.
A new statistical approach has been developed for the measurement of the velocity, the liquid fluid arriving at the edge of the plate and having velocity V is spilled out like a projectile. The recovering of the liquid in tubes allowed us to quantify flow rates for different heights positions relative to the plate, statistical processing permitted us to assess the probable velocity with a margin of error.

Abstract

Considering the importance of gear systems as one of the important vibration and noise sources in power transmission systems, an active control for suppressing gear vibration is presented in this paper. A gear bearing model is developed and used to design an active control gear-bearing system. Two possible configurations of control system are designed based on active bearing and active gear-shaft torsional coupling to control and reduce the disturbance affecting system components. The controller for computing the actuation force is designed by using the H-infinity control approach. Simulation results indicate that the desired controller can efficiently be used for vibration control of gear bearing systems.

Abstract

Peak-to-average power ratio reduction techniques for visible light communication broadcasting systems are designed, simulated, and evaluated in this work. The proposed techniques are based on merging non-linear companding techniques with precoding techniques. This work aims to nominate an optimum novel scheme combining the low peak-to-average power ratio with the acceptable bit error rate performance. Asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with the low peak-to-average power ratio performance becomes more attractive to real-life visible light communication applications due to non-linearity elimination. The proposed schemes are compared and an optimum choice is nominated. Comparing the presented work and related literature reviews for peak-to-average power ratio reduction techniques are held to ensure the proposed schemes validity and effectiveness.

Abstract

This paper investigates the noise levels present at various points in the FOSREM type fiber optic seismograph. The main aim of this research was to discover magnitudes of noise, introduced by various components of the analog and optical circuits of the device. First, the noise present in the electronic circuit without any optics connected is measured. Further experiments show noise levels including the detector diode not illuminated and illuminated. Additional tests were carried out to prove the necessity of analog circuitry shielding. All measurements were repeated using three powering scenarios which investigated the influence of power supply selection on noise. The results show that the electronic components provide a sufficient margin for the use of an even more precise detector diode. The total noise density of the whole device is lower than 4⋅10−7 rad/(s√Hz). The use of a dedicated Insulating Power Converter as a power supply shows possible advantages, but further experiments should be conducted to provide explicit thermic confirmation of these gains.

Abstract

Solar blind UV cameras are not theoretically supposed to be sensitive to solar light. However, there is practically always some sensitivity to solar light. This limited solar sensitivity can sometimes make it impossible to detect the weak emission of a corona target located on the solar background. Therefore, solar sensitivity is one of the crucial performance parameters of solar blind UV cameras. However, despite its importance, the problem of determining solar sensitivity of solar blind UV cameras has not been analysed and solved in the specialized literature, so far. This paper presents the concept (definition, measurement method, test equipment, interpretation of results) of measuring solar sensitivity of solar blind UV cameras.

Abstract

The compositional graded quaternary barriers (GQBs) instead of ternary/conventional quantum barriers (QBs) have been used to numerically enhance the efficiency of AlGaN-based ultraviolet light-emitting diode (LED). The performance of LED with GQBs is examined through carrier concentrations, energy band diagrams, radiative recombination, electron and hole flux, internal quantum efficiency (IQE), and emission spectrum. As a function of the operating current density, a considerable reduction in efficiency droop is observed in the device with composition-graded quaternary barriers as compared to the conventional structure. The efficiency droop in case of a conventional LED is ~77% which decreased to ~33% in case of the proposed structure. Moreover, the concentration of electrons and holes across the active region in case of the proposed structure is increased to ~156% and ~44%, respectively.

Abstract

Extremely dense fog event was studied on the 3rd December 2001, which occurred in the city of Apatity, the Kola Peninsula, northwestern Russia. Fog had low visibility (30–50 m) and lasted 17 h. Variations of atmospheric pressure and electric field before and during the fog event were measured. Multiple Taper Method (MTM) of spectral analysis has revealed pulsations of the atmospheric electric field in the frequency band of 0.007–0.05 Hz with a power-law turbulence spectrum. MTM and wavelet decomposition analysis results indicate the appearance of two types of atmospheric pressure oscillations under the fog conditions: low-frequency variations with periods of internal gravity waves and a substantial increase in pulsation intensity (more than an order of magnitude) in the high frequency (0.03–0.35 Hz) range. These results may help to improve the understanding of the microphysics of fog formation, development, and dissipation. High-frequency pulsations generation of atmospheric pressure under the fog conditions is also of interest because their period is close to the range of infrasonic oscillations, which can have negative consequences for human health.
